want to upgrade 440LX to Abit KT7: Will I HAVE to reinstall everything??

I really had a strange experience with my tbird. Swapped out my old Abit BX6-2 with Celeron with a brand new A7V/850. Fired it up, watched Windows hum along, and everything went fine. Thought to myself, Let's install my SCSI drive. Bad Move. Windows crashes, GPF's.. wouldn't load anymore...

What you have the entire setup set as. (Motherboard + CPU) Did you order it from a reliable source? If the bridges on the CPU are NOT closed then most likely it is not remarked. (THey cant remark it if they dont close the bridges). People have been using defogger kits from car parts stores...

Is there a waterfall type program that works on Durons/Thunderbird?

WinME does have software cooling. When I was running windows 98, I got something like 45 degrees celsius, and then went dwon to about 35 after I loaded Rain. When I upgraded to WinME, I got 35C, and rain has no effect whatsoever.

I Need Advice On A Heatsink/Fan Purchase - Please

Fop 38 should be fine :) They are probably the next best thing to a PAL6035. Leave the CPU Cracking to Chrome/Golden orbs :) (I had a gorb, and it did a piss poor job of cooling, I had to have a fan next to my computer, until I switched to a PAL6035).

Does Anyone Know if not having a fan on your cpu will cause they system to freeze up before it can boot

Yes. Your CPU is heating up, and when you restart it cools down very slightly, but not as much as the last time, so it gets hotter and hotter until finally its so hot that it can't POST nomore. Makes sense to me. If I ran my 1 GHz thunderbird without a fan, I'd be crying. :)

What is better, Thunderbird or Classic Atholon?

On the Thunderbird/Duron, the L2 cache is on die and runs at a 1:1 ratio, unlike the class athlon.

Has anyone experianced degredation over time w/pencil trick?

Been running for just over 2 weeks with my 850 o/c to 1000MHz :) I'm kinda prepared if it does happen, but I hope it doesn't cos' I don't imparticularily want to take my heatsink off.

Poll: how many case fans do you have?

Currently have 1 80MM intake (behind cpu) 1 60MM intake (Sunon 23CFM) (front of case) 1 60MM Delta 60MM (38CFM), CPU 1 120MM YS-Tech Blowhole 35 on my Athlon 850 O/C to 1000 idle. 43-44 max.

Problems Using A Thunderbird Socket A CPU with Golden Orb ??

Yes. I broke a Tbird with a golden (not CHROME) orb. :) I found an article which helps afterwards. I was very sad :) Dont get agolden orb.. get a chrome orb. even then, I wouldn't recommend it. There are better HSF's on the market, get a FOP38 or PAL6035. I got my hand exercises from flexing...

how do i underclock a cpu?

Yep. Often I find it unnecessary to lower the voltage (just use default).. Just lower the bus speed. :) Your multiplier * new bus speed = new cpu speed :)

Problem overclocking Duron 700 on A7V

Strange! Judging by the temps, an extra 100 MHz shouldn't be a problem, I dont think you mentioned if you tried 950 (if you can?) See how that goes. It's possible that the duron can't simply do it.. which may be the case. If you pumped the voltage to max, and you selected 1000.. and it will...

Temperature in Windows ME - STRANGE!

Yeah, when I run rc5 it goes alllll the way back up to 42'ish. :) 11 degrees difference. In win98 se it peaked at 45'ish, but idled at 42'ish.
