Free programming software?

sure... many programs do not NEED to be cross platform... but why waste you time writing tons of code that you cannot easily move to another platform? What is the actual benefit you get? In most cases... none. I never said Mono was different than .NET, just that for cross-platform, make sure...

Free programming software?

Not locking your code down to one OS is the best way to go. simple stuff.. thats not very demanding on the hardware.. is always good in Java. Full GUI stuff is built in and can look like native windows on whatever OS you run it on... no recompiling needed, just move it from OS to OS and run...

Eclipse on OSX == Slooooooooooow

I haven't looked at that fix.. but Eclipse Java and Eclipse C++ both run the same speed for me on OSX as they do on Windows... which isn't fast, but usable.

Civilization V Coming This Fall

I can't read this whole thread... but I been playing on my Mac (by Wine usage, not using Windows) and I gotta say that unlike Civ4, there is MUCH more strategy involved in Civ5... this is awesome so far. The problem i have is once you learn tactics really good, the AI sucks... and battles are...

Cheapest HDMI adapter capable of passing audio?

There are many websites claiming to have these... everyone I search for and find always say they are out of stock or on backorder... Luckily I wont need one myself for a couple more months, so I'm waiting a bit... be interested if you find one thats actually in stock somewhere.

Irfanview for mac?

I don't think there is anything irfanview can do that you cannot do with software that comes with Mac OS X. for basic image cropping and resizing and viewing, just use Preview.app.

Change the format of a disk

Maybe you need to reevaluate what your doing and if you really need to do this. I cannot think of any reason you'd need to do what your saying you need to do.

Will the Windows upgrade install trick work on a mac?

just use the Bootcamp Assistant to set up a dual boot... and yes the upgrade disc trick will work fine. When you are running Windows with a dual boot, its normal Windows running directly just like any other PC.

How can i give someone with an ipad some ebooks

did that add gift options in iTunes yet? with tv shows and movies you can go in and "gift" and item to someone and pay for it and they get the info to download it to their device. I haven't checked if they got this added to the ibooks store yet.... but you have to do it through iTunes. You...

Parallels or Fusion on New 13" MBP

VirtualBox is great for free... but VMware Fusion is much better in performance... and if you have a .edu email address you can buy it with an academic discount and save a bunch.

can't empty trash!

I've run into this now and then... but I'm a linux geek, so on OSX its just as easy for me to open Terminal and go in and sudo force a delete and its gone.

18-20 FPS on safari 5 to 15 on Firefox.. with weird pauses... 39 - 40 on chrome

I'm a techie; not a Mac-ie... backing up a Mac HDD to a PC? Reloading OSX?

well when you are done... tell her to get some 1TB external drive and set it up as a time machine drive and plug it in regularly so it can back up everything... you can do a full restore to a new drive with a time machine back up no problems... can even use it to go to a new machine and not lose...

Can anyone recommend some options for the followings apps? Also, NeoOffice help?

I have a project I call Wineskin... its focused on making Wine more Mac like... its mostly all GUI controlled, and focused on making Mac .apps... so you get a final product that works very similar to a native Mac app...

Flash 10.1 beta for mac, with Hardware accel

I installed this (I have a 320m) and there is a noticeable difference in processor usage, and flash videos are playing smoother... so its kinda nice. I'd rather just not have to have flash at all though.

Apple care just gave me a new laptop

Next revision they will probably remake all the MacBook Pros to a new design.. that is big enough to house everything needed in all 3 sizes... and give it a new look. Unless nvidia and intel are settled by then and nvidia makes chipsets for the newer processors.

I agree, I ove mine too.. its an awesome little machine. If you haven't actually pushed the 320m yet, you may be surprised... very fast for a low power integrated chipset graphics GPU.... if they went with an i3 they woulda had to redesign the whole thing to fit in a dedicated GPU+memory, or...

Which 13" MBP?

I have a new MBP 13" with the 320m .... if you do not need strong graphics, getting the old version (if cheap) could be a good deal... but I play a few games now and then, and the 320m is more than twice as fast as the 9400M in my older 15" unibody... its remarkably faster than I thought it...

I'm going to buy my first MacBook next week.

so did the C2D macbook pros... I suggest always using SMCfancontrol, and manually spinning your fans up proactively, instead of letting the mac do it reactively... if you know its going to push hard and get hot, stick the fans on 6000rpm early, so it wont get that hot.
