  1. What is it about Windows that everybody likes? (A rant)

And let me tell you why. Stability, proven workable configurations on flexible hardware options, and ease of installation with proper resources to manage the software suite in development that can be pushed to the user through teams of coding in a high level software managed manner. Nothing...
  2. Need mouse with soft click for RSI

Your thumb is a lot more resilient and the movement of the thumb on a thumb trackball pretty much mimics any gripping behaviors one would use a thumb for anyways, so your thumb would be already used to the ball and socket motions. Also, your thumb does not have the acting weight of the entire...
  3. Microsoft to buy minecraft for 2 billion.

Between these two posts, it pretty much nailed what Minecraft NEEDS to do to further itself as a game. Notch has been sitting pretty much as Valve has with Team Fortress, Portal, and long before Half Life - now just sitting back and collecting revenue. With the technical marvels that the game...
  4. Need mouse with soft click for RSI

A higher DPI mouse would not help the concern that there is the elbow elevated to support your cursor drag, thus straining the upper arm and shoulder over time. It may minimize a bit in wrist and forearm, but they still act on the shoulder and elbow - if the whole arm isn't resting comfortably...
  5. Need mouse with soft click for RSI

Give or take two to three weeks of regular use. It can be an adjustment period because the mind and muscle memory is not used to such a behavior. If however, one uses a laptop trackpad with a thumb, then the transition may not be too terribly difficult.
  6. Insidious Adobe Update

One other note, IE does not need the separate Adobe Flash to work with Flash content. I know, I have tested this on my Surface Pro 2 with Opera (latest Chromium one) and IE (Desktop and Modern) without the additional Adobe software installed.
  7. Insidious Adobe Update

I concur with the above. Go directly to Adobe's website per link above, not download.net/com or any other portal download site (because most if not all of them insist of installing an installer for you to even start installing your intended application). Have not ran into this issue either.
  8. Best Windows Phone, Verizon

The main distinct noticeable differences as a smartphone for me... If you want a removable battery and a microSD card slot, there is the Samsung ATIV SE. The Icon, doesn't have either (save for the dedicated camera button and best camera of the three mentioned in this thread). The HTC M8...
  9. Navigation apps.... for PCs

I would suggest Microsoft Streets and Trips, they also have voice directions along with route planning with waypoints... But that line of software is to be discontinued... in favor of that default Map app (due to the app mentality). If you want a full robust software route planner, there is no...
  10. Need mouse with soft click for RSI

Are you lifting your entire arm off the desk frequently? do you have not a way to rest your forearm or is there a mismatch from your desk to seating height that forces you to elevate your elbow (possibly above the desk surface height)? If your forearm isn;t comfortable in that manner, being...
  11. I need to know how to get wood.

Oak for carving is not quite good, the grain is readily easy to split and isn't as tight and big. Intricacy can only be done so much with oak. Maple, is a good, cheap choice stocked by many lumber yards, and the aforementioned Rockler and Woodcraft. Maple is where you find some of the desirable...
  12. I need to know how to get wood.

Also, when I went online to find a local lumber yard, Google/any Internet search is not exactly fully helpful. Most results come up in flooring sales around the local areas or any cabinetry places. Keywords to use would be hardwood lumber minus flooring, remodeling, or cabinentry. You would...
  13. I need to know how to get wood.

The other retail physical presence store, would be Rockler. http://www.rockler.com They too also have carving and turning blanks one would use in carving, and more of a selection than construction/cabinent grade/type of wood in Lowes or Home Depot. Per board foot however, they are not exactly...
  14. Apple Rant

Am I the only one that doesn't mind the sweetness of red delicious? (Texture wise, they can suck indeed).
  15. self driving cars

I would say that having a actual person acting as navigator pointing points of interests well ahead of time so the driver can focus at the situation and driving scenario at the time, converging on the objective interest, is cooperatively ideal. The navigator isn't in your face with the constant...
  16. self driving cars

I will emphasize that in BOLD. Too often, some one on the highway will keep speed and not being courteous in slowing down a few notches to allow the slower vehicle to gain the necessary speed (if they are even gaining speed at all on the intended on ramp) to merge. There are many that are just...
  17. self driving cars

Nothing can fix stupid. In my personal opinion, automated driving would eliminate that learning of awareness and navigation control as well as respect in operations of moving about with respect to everyone else - making stupid worse.
  18. self driving cars

This. Many of the traffic problems stem from improper load balancing of traffic flow - outside of an individual driver's control as many drivers are inherently reactionary instead of actively aware to the situation (automated cars that are isolated aren't going to solve that other than allowing...
  19. Anand Retires!!

It is nice to have a change of hands. His main reviews are all selected on a basis of extreme personal bias, and cannot even comment fully on aspects of hardware/software/products because as he said - doesn't interest him or can give a proper perspective outlook. If it wasn't for Anand, they...
  20. woodworking experts

One thing with the band saw, is you have to make sure the blade tracks properly in addition to using a fence guide (that is also calibrated to be parallel to the blade. It involves setting the guide bearings, and making sure the band saw blade is running evenly balanced with no drift on the...
  21. Software for Making Youtube Videos

A combination of four programs I use. Action for capturing your monitor, window or entire screen for video. It is quite good, even if it isn't as free in cost compared to the other monitor capture programs. https://www.mirillis.com/en/products/action.html Krystal Audio Engine for multi source...
  22. does Apple deliberately slow its older models before a new release?

More than likely, this. New software, would more likely require faster/more performing hardware (because features, function, etc). But these things are not existent on older hardware platforms, thus the only way to actually use the new software features and functions, would be your typical...
  23. Writing Drivers

Here is a reference from a simple internet search if you are really interested in such. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff557573(v=vs.85).aspx
  24. Windows OS... easing into yearly "subscription" updates?

Short answer, no. It would be suicidal. Paying for either a retail/OEM install is as same as one would be in a subscription service anyways (over time), but with the freedom to use a newer version. (This is no different than using a newer version of ANY software - with libraries one would get...
  25. What operating system do you use?

8.1 Pro across the HTPC, desktop with dual GPUs, and Surface Pro 2.
  26. Opera browser?

Ghostery is something I use along with Adblock. But Opera has a private window/tab mode too.
  27. HTC One (M8) For Windows

The only Verizon bloat on there (and even I don't consider this bloat) is an app for My Verizon, which is an easy access to your phone account and options. And there is also pre-installed VZNavigator app (which it is Verizon insisting you also pay additional for voice navigated GPS mapping)...
  28. Is There Anyway to Use the Metro UI Wallpaper On Desktop?

They as of current can be, or snapped at a side. I believe what the OP might be referring to is the backdrop of the Start Screen.
  29. Is There Anyway to Use the Metro UI Wallpaper On Desktop?

If you are talking about ripping the stock options Start Screen backgrounds, then this link would help out. http://lifehacker.com/use-windows-8s-start-screen-and-lock-screen-images-as-1226933503 Of course, the desktop wallpaper doesn't allow some of the dynamic options of some of the Start...
  30. Windows Phone users - music app?

My music demands aren't that demanding. So I cannot comment on the different options. Xbox Music actually improved for me as time went on. For instance, I can get into my playlists a bit faster and for all the time I used it, have no issues for simple track forward and back along with toggling...
  31. Android/iOS Capture 96.4% Of Smartphone Market, Windows Phone Shrinks

The bolded is especially important. And not just from an availability standpoint but also be a viable presented point from the sales representatives too. But I would slightly disagree with the "example" device. Nokia has that for awhile, but has been launched first with AT&T with their models...
  32. Android/iOS Capture 96.4% Of Smartphone Market, Windows Phone Shrinks

I did. I in fact am tempted if it wasn't for this silly thing. What is more difficult in adding another button on your board? HTC did so before on a smaller chassis 8X compared to the ATIV SE (and their new upcoming WP8 phone). Why is all of a sudden not wanting that uniform feature set a bad...
  33. Android/iOS Capture 96.4% Of Smartphone Market, Windows Phone Shrinks

Recently, Samsung also had their ATIV SE. I really want to get that because of being able to add on a microSD card plus one can emergency swap a battery. Problem is, it lacks a physical camera button and I am not sure I am completely on board of the physical Windows icon button. HTC, had a...
  34. Old Windows Software -- The Likelihood of Full Operability in Win 7 or 8

For sugars and grins, I ran the standalone .exe of Skifree (redone for XP from the 16bit program where I first got acquainted with it) on Windows 8.1 64bit. Ran just fine. Much more complex programs may have caveats, but it comes down to installing it and trying it, and if not working right...
  35. Buses that drive in the left lane or fast lane

This. If any, parts of congestion can be traced due to people not learning to interleave between other cars and merging in a nice manner, people always trying to race ahead of one another. Also, on entry, people do not know how to match speed as quickly on a ramp as possible or interleave to...
  36. TV vs Monitor - 32"

Make sure you have access to overscan settings in the PC if you are connecting by HDMI. Overscan, I believe is not an issue if connecting by VGA input. What is the intended viewing distance and will you be also using the TV to view things you control or would you use the laptop's screen in a...
  37. Are you happy with what the internet has become?

Information Super Highway... Complete with congestion and some areas in toll roads (network throttling, congested wireless areas, paid service access), rude drivers in cutting people off to honking to being too slow or too fast wit no care or disagreeing with one's driving intentions (similar...
  38. Surface Pro 3 thread - Info, thoughts, opinions

Two things that dissuade me from bluetooth. Additional battery, and wireless conflict in connectivity. Having the type cover/touch cover connectivity means it is solid, and not worrying about the wireless space of other devices and networks to compete with (channel switching, etc). Not to say I...
  39. Link your first post on Anandtech.com

Same here. UBB thing meant that the actual "first post" is not searchable.
  40. Opera questions for Opera users

Anything beyond 12.17, is Chromium based (the current version you have is 23.0) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presto_(layout_engine) On the FTP link, up a folder, you can find other past versions. I haven't looked at the specific version for which Presto is last implemented until now.
