Prescott & Northwood P4

The main difference between a Prescott and Northwood CPU is the 1MB cache (L1 or L2, I forget) on the Prescott chip, Northwoods have 512kb cache.

How do I up the DMA mode?

Your motherboard's IDE controller probably tops out at UDMA 5 while your friend's supports UDMA 6. You'll need a PCI IDE controller card that supports up to UDMA 6 if you want your hard drive to run at that spec.

DVD Burning Questions

Many drives, like the Memorex and TDK drives, are just rebadged drives from other manufacturers. I believe the TDK 16x dual layer burner is a rebadged NEC-3500. You'll end up paying for extra packaging, blank media and software. The Memorex drive may be a rebadged Pioneer (or even a Sony drive).

Choosing DVD R media for a Pioneer DVR-108.

It would really depend on the drive that you're going to play these backed up DVDs on, if it's an older player use "-R" discs for maximum compatibility. If the player is about 1 to 2 years old it should work with either format "-R" or "+R".

Make things easy on yourself and download a copy of DVDShrink to rip the DVD to your hard drive and then use CloneDVD2 (free for 30 days) to compress and burn the DVD. You can get into the more elaborate programs later on when you get more comfortable with what you are doing, but with CloneDVD2...

DVD Burning Questions

I just bought the NEC-3500a in black to take over for my trusted LG-GSA 4040b drive. At 4x the LG drive too about 15 minutes to burn a full DVD, the 2x burner in my laptop takes about 30 minutes. I don't have any faster media available to me so I am stuck at 4x even with my 16x burner...

I used a jeweller's flathead screwdriver. IIRC, the pins were like little "hooks". I pushed the connector and the wires together (there's a bit of slack in the connector), pushed the metal bits that are visible through the side of the connector and then pulled the connector and wires appart...

Delayed Write Failed OR Hd is 'going' bust?

I've had the same problem on different partitions on two Maxtor 160GB (8MB/7200RPM) hard drives on two different machines. Both drives were attached to a Promise TX133 IDE controller. I easily got rid of the "Delayed Write Failure" message by moving all of the information from those partitions...
