    Memory problem :-??

You can still find old ram like that on [H] from time to time, and it is usually cheap.

Seasonic 80+ Gold 650W PSU: S12G vs SSR

I prefer to slightly oversize the PSU to give them some reserve capacity and, hopefully, longevity.

    No clue about video card

The 780 is obviously faster, but not even close to twice as fast. Some people are willing to spend LOTS of money for a small increase in performance. Unless your friend has money to burn, tell him to get the 760, or even 770.

A Strategy of Pure Whim and Little Necessity -- the 2014 PC Project

FWIW, I just upgraded from an X58 system with a W3540 at 4.4ghz to the X79 with a 4930k at 4.6ghz. The biggest difference is Sata 3 and USB 3.0, which I could have added to my old system for less than $75 and been LOTS on money ahead. X79 is already dead and was never implemented properly...

    New Gaming Rig

The games I play use, at most, 3 cores. I have a 6 core and see several at idle the entire time I am playing. Such a waste of money for gaming.

    edited final build for gaming

That $706 gorilla sitting in the middle of the room makes it difficult to do much within a $1,400 budget. You might also consider getting a different CPU, with an unlocked multiplier, to keep from bottlenecking that video card.

    Replacement for G9X?

I still have a few of the G9x's for general duty but have an MMO7 mouse as my main gaming mouse. Honestly, it has a lot more buttons, and the ability to create elaborate macros, but the built quality is horrible. If it breaks within the first 2 years, they replace it for free ... after that...

    Top Exhaust vs Side intake

Everyone seems to be going away from the HAF932's but they come with the large fan on the front, side and top, with a smaller one pushing out the back. I remove the top fan to install the radiator and that gives me spare for the front/side. In over 5 years I have not had to replace one.

Teflon tape for threaded water-cooling fittings?

My Heatkiller 3.0 is my filter. It can remove even the smallest contaminants (while losing flow in the process).

    Acceptable 12v rail voltage

My Corsair 1200 gives me 12.0-12.1 at all times, while my CM1000 is 12.4+. Honestly seems like computers like the 12.4 better than 12.0 and I can imagine problems below 12.0.

    Corsair PSU RMA

Yea ^ ... Redbeard helped me with the RMA of my HX1000 and I received a NIB replacement with all accessories. Look him up on EVGA or [H] and he will help your out. MUCH better than working through the usual channels.

Is this fair?? Antec want to replace my HCP1200 with a HCP1000?

I have been lucky with Corsair, they have always replaced my stuff with new, and included all the cables and accessories, while only asking me to return the power supply itself. Then again, Western Digital replaced a new 640 Black with a 750 Green and said it was an upgrade!

Killer deal on an GTX 780 Ti Classified

If I plan to buy something, and EVGA makes one, they always get my business. I currently have 5 of their motherboards and too many of their video cards to count.

An Overclocking Benchmark Analysis of Nvidia's 780/780Ti

I guess you confirmed that I made the right decision. I found a guy getting rid of his 780 HydroCopper to get a Ti model, so he sold me the HydroCopper cheap. Now I just need to find another for a matched set.

Rethinking my new rebuild w/different hardware??

Stay away from socket 2011, it brings a large cost penalty with little performance to justify it. Add to that the fact that it already obsolete and has never been a solid platform and you should have enough justification to steer clear of it. Purchase a nice Z87 system and save the rest of...

    Recommend me a replacement motherboard

One issue is that the IMC is on the CPU with 2011, that means that memory incompatibility is likely to continue (if it currently exists). It appears that most of the companies that usually lead the way with motherboard design failed hard on X79. EVGA and ASUS both had lots of issues, with...

    Worthy upgrade from 2600k yet?

I just upgraded my X58 with a Xeon W3540 at 4.4ghz to an X79 with a 4930K at 4.6ghz. Honestly, I wish that I had purchased a $50 combo card that gave me USB 3.0 and Sata 3 instead. I really felt that the Sata and USB 3.0 were holding me back, an that is the majority of what I gained by...

Teflon tape for threaded water-cooling fittings?

I also agree that you should not use tape on any fittings that have an O-ring. most parts of the water loop can pass small contaminants but the modern CPU blocks have tight restrictions that can be totally obstructed by the smallest contaminants. Something like shredded teflon take could...

    Top Exhaust vs Side intake

The beauty of those large fans is that they spin slow and are practically silent. If you have air cooled GPU's, the side fan helps to feed them with fresh air.

    Silence - Decoupling the Pump

I really would not worry about heat, the pump will be cooled by the coolant running through it. Attaching it with some of the double sided foam tape (maybe multiple layers if what you have is thin) is usually more than enough to keep it in place. Once the lines are cut and adjusted, the pump...

how much would I have to spend for this?

Take this for what it is worth. I had a 790i chipset with a Q9650 at 4.1ghz, an X58 I7-940 at 4.4ghz and a Z77 with a 3570k@4.5ghz all set up side-by-side. I set them all back to 4.1 and the performance was almost identical. They all had SSD's and the Z77's main advantages came when SATA 6...
