Old PC usually too noisy/big. I'm happy with mini-ITX chassis + Gigabyte E350 motherboard. Does HD1080 well with integral graphics.

backup image of new machine 13 discs? HD?

Geesh, most everyone images to a spare drive or an external USB or eSATA drive. Not a good idea to use DVDs. Acronis is what I've used for years. Better yet, get a cheap drive and CLONE your disk. That way, all you do is boot the spare disk. Conversely, Imaging is a PITA to recover.

my company is obsessed with buying old hardware

My employer buys PC/laptops - depreciates them to $0 in 3 years. Then they refuse to allow employees to install a newer OS, or replace a disk drive, etc. They incorrectly reason that the IT tech support costs are too high - the flaw being the disruption to my customer-facing work is far, far...

Where is HP now, on a reliability scale?

bought 4 or so HP printers over the years. Steady decline. Last straw on the last one was crappy software plus falls-apart-if-you-look-at-it plastic. Epson 630 - been really good. Very happy. Good software. Everything HP was in the early days - pre-Bangalore.

A friend just bought a Toshiba laptop at (barf) Best Buy. Came with Win 8. First time I've had a chance to play with Win 8 on a PC for a few private hours. I says hours, plural, to allow time to get past the initial "it's different" reaction. Sadly, Win 8 on a laptop (PC too?) is just totally...

Favorite OS for HTPC

If you intend to look at cable channels other than local broadcast, you'll need to go with Windows 7 and windows media center. I think it's the only software which is permitted by the industry to decrypt. Or - I used to use a second cable box connected to a Hauppauge HD-PVR via HD component...

My Windows 8 Review!!

Even if win8 were free, too much of my time would be wasted farting with it. since as a desktop user who would get no benefit for the hassle of changing from win7. good luck to MS in the tablet-wars. The phone war is between warriors other than MS.

Weird Boot-from-USB problem on a Latitude x300

BIOS-specific for that laptop? WIndows XP and I think WIn7 cannot boot from a USB drive because there are no drivers in first-parts of the OS. You may be using some other format of Windows that is supposed to be bootable from USB.

Which 802.11 mode is in use by a device?

use of 802.11g and 802.11n is on-going by client. That is, if laptop A is 11g only, and laptop B is 11g/n, the routers sends/receives data packets (frames) in the mode that each client laptop supports. It's sequential of course, because any one frame is sent to one laptop/device, and vice-versa...

Trying to build SFF Server, advice/help needed

IN WIN has some nice small form factor cases too. I use a NAS for storage, and serving web pages, FTP, DLNA, etc. I've built two mini-ITX boxes. Opinion: If you don't want to use a NAS, and instead run Win 2008 server (why???) then go mATX in a small case. Mini-ITX is a physical PITA and...

Free vs paid Antivirus?

Agree. Long time user. Microsoft should have a highly vested impetus for a good antivirus for their WIndows OS target!! Indeed, MSSE should have come out free years ago. I must use Symantec at work. Awful. McAffe - worse yet.

My experience (within the warranty period) They take in RMA drives. They quickly ship out "recertified" drives - these are RMA'd drives that are repaired or had no trouble found (NTF). I suspect NTFs are most of the drives. What this gets you is a used replacement with lord knows how many hours...
