8gb vs 16gb RAM for Gaming

Attempting to remove a hard drive, OS not permitting

Run a repair from 7's install disc at least, will probably find the installation and patch up the boot files.

What brands can I trust for BD-R media?

Verbatim (aka Mitsubishi if importing from Japan) all the way, only 2 bad discs in 3+ years of burning hundreds, and both of those were RE that had had quite a few rewrites.

Interesting read, thanks. Does seem idiotic to use a single lane when that's way short of SATA 6Gb/s limits, talk about false advertising :mad: Roll on LGA2011 and fingers crossed both USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s are finally native!

SSD Speeds low?

I have a similar issue (and near identical speeds), 510 250GB on Asus P6T (x58) - have tried both Asus' U3S6 controller and Startech's PEXSAT32 (both marvell-based) and can't get near the advertised speeds. I'm pretty much stuck with it until switching to a motherboard with onboard 6Gb/s which...

corrupted external usb drive - what went wrong?

Are you "safely removing" it from the tray after use? Not so important if just reading from the drive during that session, but writes are likely to cause corruption if you just pull it out, even a few minutes after activity.

Micron C400 Benchmarks!!!!

Yeah but they'd need to be on the same network to realistically keep in sync - thus almost certainly the same building. So both are then equally vulnerable to freak accidents like power surges, fire, flood, or attack via internet. I have a tertiary copy of critical personal data offsite...

Can't speak for other user experiences, but sticking to Pioneer burners and Verbatim BD-R/E/DL/DL-RE since mid 2008 I've had one coaster (RE) out of ~250. Always liked this alternate method to HDDs, despite how time consuming and inconvenient it can be... Jumped ship from CD > DVD > BD each...

Ancient vs modern data storage

Density trade-off innit. If Mr Caveman had to chisel in rock all the words a 3TB HDD could hold (conservative estimate = 330 billion) he'd need a bigger planet. And the beauty of modern storage is you could replicate this monstrous amount of information in 8-9 unattended hours. Gone from CD-R...

Blu-ray disks as Backup

I've used them for a couple of years, they're fairly affordable now too - I order direct from Japan at around £45/$70 for 10 x 46GB discs. Despite the inconvenience, I've always preferred CD/DVD/BD for primary backup - adds protection against power spikes, viruses, hacking, magnets(!), and now...

80gb ssd is starting to fill up, what to do?

I have an X25-V boot drive with a 100GB C:Games folder which is actually an independent RAID partition. You could do something similar, assuming Windows 7 x64: Plug in the new SSD and boot as normal Close as much as you can (this could be tricky for stuff like Winzip which has shell DLLs open...

Western Digital's 3TB behemoth arrives...

The 512b implementation has no bearing on needing an expansion card - your SATA chipset or RAID card needs 64bit LBA support to host the drive. Unfortunately it seems to be a pretty obscure attribute that isn't stated in my P6T's spec-sheet.

Intel X25-M 80GB Alignment Necessary?

If the cloning software can choose an existing partition rather than create one, then boot your WD with the SSD as a data drive and lay out its partition(s) from disk management which will align them correctly. Although note that Windows will not be a happy bunny if it finds two identical disk...

Does partitioning a drive increase performance?

Really don't need a pagefile period with 8GB ram - not caused me any compatibility issues in the last 12 months (6gb system ram).

They do have a physical difference though - SATA6 has a ridge down the middle of the cable. (Not sure what this means in reality!)
