Question 13700k+RTX 4090 in Phantom 530 - case airflow concern

That's true. This case is from a time where optical drives were still in general use, hence the top drive bay. The bottom drive bay was for HDDs, and is totally removable, which I removed so the front 200mm intake is completely unobstructed. Unfortunately the top optical drive bay is riveted in...

Question 13700k+RTX 4090 in Phantom 530 - case airflow concern

It would be difficult to do a consistent, repeatable test, since I am trying to optimize the ingress of air for the CPU cooler, while trying to make sure that the egress of warm air caused by the GPU isn't hindered. Just wanted to know whether there is prior knowledge of best practices if there...

Question 13700k+RTX 4090 in Phantom 530 - case airflow concern

I just upgraded to a i7 13700K and a RTX 4090, and I am reusing my previous build's NZXT Phantom 530 case, simply because it’s spacious, has good air flow and didn’t feel like changing it for no reason. I have replaced old fans, and added more, but now I have a concern about the airflow. The...

Is a VA panel more fragile than IPS?

Is an AMVA panel, the glass sheet itself, thinner/more fragile and break prone than an IPS glass sheet? The reason I ask is that I have a Sony XBR-43X800D that I use as a monitor. It's an 43", AMVA panel. Ever since I got it, there is a bit to dirt present, appearing between the LCD and the...

Is electric charge in new TV body normal?

The TV is going back. Should get another piece in around 2 weeks. I guess the current was because it wasn't being grounded (not a 3 prong plug), and was using the computer to ground itself, via the HDMI cable.

Is electric charge in new TV body normal?

I am not sure if “Power Supplies” or this section is the right one for this post, but since it’s a weird electricity issue I decided to post it here. This is why I noticed the issue: I recently bought a Sony XBR43X800D (43", 4K) to use as a monitor. The day I got it I set it up, got the picture...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

RMA has become a case of hardware musical chairs, where the same items seem to be circulated until some poor fool accepts a defective item. Have heard of people being given bad replacement after bad replacement, particularly with graphics cards. Replacements so bad that they often don't boot or...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

No, no. I didn't happen with multiple boards. It's happened with one board, the X99A, twice and in the exact same way. The same board was sent to me twice. The first replacement I got, a X99S, had two bad RAM slots, out of the box, not this problem. I had turned off PSU and left it over night...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

I took possible problems with UPS into account, even though it has worked with all other systems before and since that single board. Second time I had removed it completely and connected directly to mains.

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

I don't have the board now, since it's gone back to MSI (again), so I can't try your suggestion. Even if I did, it would be currently dead. I have tried my normal nightly procedure with two different power supplies, the first one being S12-D 850, and the new one being SS-850KM3. Also, prior to...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

Wait, you are saying that a board that becomes non-functional when left without power for a few hours is fine? That I should just work around it? What if I were to go on vacation and turn off utilities? What if there is a thunderstorm and power is out for a long time? What if I move? If the...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

That RF radio incident was interesting, but nothing to cause any inductive effects anywhere near where I am. Not to mention that the problem is only with that one mobo, not any others. I am leaning towards it either being a temperature variation caused problem, or maybe some thing the...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

The CMOS battery was new. The keyboard and mouse work fine with all other boards (including the two previous X99S) and even the faulty board except when it has been left off for a long period. If they were to blame, would it matter how long the system was left off? I had seen that video, but...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

The CMOS battery was fine. Even if it wasn't, why would that lead to BIOS corruption, and only the primary BIOS? At most, it should mean that BIOS settings wouldn't be retained. Also, as I had mentioned, I had turned the power off multiple times, for over 30 minutes or more, before leaving it...

MSI X99A SLI Plus - Very odd mobo malfunction

About two months ago, my MSI X99S SLI Plus died. It stopped booting, both BIOS lights came on at the same time and the CPU fan connector stopped working too. Additionally, it killed my 5820k. Looking online, I am not the only one to have experienced this type of malfunction on this board...

Overclocking TWO different 5820k. Similar problems.

I am getting a new power supply, even though I doubt my current one is faulty. As for the BIOS settings, the only changes I made were setting the multiplier, setting the voltage to adaptive and changing the core voltage. I had played around with LLC/Vdroop on my first mobo (the one that lasted 8...

Overclocking TWO different 5820k. Similar problems.

Well, my replacement board is dead! Same problem as before. Don't know if it was because of Prime95 or not, though I had run it far less than I had on the first board, and the original board lasted for 9 months after the initial setup and testing, while this one was on for less than 10 hours...

Overclocking TWO different 5820k. Similar problems.

Thanks for the link. I hope I got lucky and didn't harm my system with the Prime95 test. At 4.4GHz at 1.235v, I successfully completed a 2 hour RealBench stress test. Failed it at 1.22v, so the sweet spot should be somewhere between that. I wasn't able to get 4.5 at 1.25v. Will do some more testing.

Overclocking TWO different 5820k. Similar problems.

Damn! Never heard of Prime95/Haswell-E problem. Is that a confirmed thing? Any links? I have already run the Prime95's Small FFT test on the new board/CPU for around 2 hours, and what you said is making me nervous. Now if something even a little off happens with the system, it will have me...

LCD panel shadow effect caused by EMI from cables?

Good IPS panels do have vastly better color accuracy and consistency, even if it's not perfect. Better/worse is a measure inherently relative to available alternatives. Modern high-end IPS panels (not E-IPS), though not perfect, make other panel types look like a joke. It's a difference of not...

LCD panel shadow effect caused by EMI from cables?

I can see how my wording was ambiguous. I meant that lower cost panels usually display poorer brightness and color consistency, compared to higher quality/cost panels. I can't say if yours is exceptionally bad or not without looking at it, but it's probably same as most normal panels. Try...

LCD panel shadow effect caused by EMI from cables?

Oh, that's just poor panel quality. The best professional monitors are much better in this regard, but still not perfect. Most other panels are much worse in comparison.

LCD panel shadow effect caused by EMI from cables?

What do you mean by "shadow effect"? Is it a shadow appearing on on-screen elements (gui etc.), even those that shouldn't have them? Like the mouse pointer showing a shadow, despite shadowing turned off? Or if you draw a straight line in an image program, it has a shadow? If so, this isn't...

    i7 5820K @4.4 slower than i5 3570K@4.4

Keep in mind that the processor downclocks at idle even with the minimum state at 100%. When idle, or working on some light computation, the processor goes between the minimum of x12 multiplier and 0.718v, to the maximum (of whatever your OC is). The minimum processor state simply sets the base...

    i7 5820K @4.4 slower than i5 3570K@4.4

With my 5820k, 4.0GHz at 1.1v, using High Performance power mode, the processor multiplier goes between x12 and x40 (and voltage between 0.718 and 1.1 respectively), as required. Playing just a video, as another poster mentioned, doesn't cause it to stay at max, unless it's something demanding...

Suggest Reliable and Quiet 4TB/5TB HDD

I think I am going for the WD Reds. Now I have the choice between 4 or 5TB. Price per TB is coming out to be exactly the same in both cases. Which one is likely to be more reliable? The 4TB, because of the lower platter count? Or is that not a relevant metric anymore?

TENTATIVELY SOLVED: Afterburner?! Continuing with the SLI Power-bug issue

I actually meant that Afterburner does not have "bling" i.e. interfaces that are too cool for their own good, and become less readable. Look at EVGA's PrecisionX, at least its default skin (I don't know if it has other skins that are better). I don't know about ASUS's own software specifically...

TENTATIVELY SOLVED: Afterburner?! Continuing with the SLI Power-bug issue

Try other software as well, if you are having problems with this one. Most, like Afterburner, are brand agnostic. I have used AB with MSI, ASUS and Zotac cards, and it works perfectly well with all of them. I just like AB because it has advanced features, no bling and I am familiar with it.

TENTATIVELY SOLVED: Afterburner?! Continuing with the SLI Power-bug issue

I think they gods have it in for you. Remember, "Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad". Kidding aside, I installed by second 970 about a month after getting the first. I don't remember if I did the "uninstall driver before installing" thing, but that's my standard MO for driver...

TENTATIVELY SOLVED: Afterburner?! Continuing with the SLI Power-bug issue

Just tested another thing. I stopped Afterburner from starting with Windows (by unchecking "Start with Windows" in Settings), and rebooted. My cards are still downclocking to 135 MHz without Afterburner (checked via GPU-Z). Then I started AB manually, and checked again. Same thing, cards...

TENTATIVELY SOLVED: Afterburner?! Continuing with the SLI Power-bug issue

Just a heads up, but for me, applying the fan profile does not require selecting "Apply OC settings at startup". I can leave that off, and as long as Afterburner is running, the fans are controlled by it, irrespective of whether AB was launched at startup or not. However, the aforementioned...

A CALL TO ARMS: The likely power-consumption driver bug for SLI 970/980

So having Afterburner start with Windows has solved that problem? Woohoo! For at least getting this far! However, I am a little confused by something. You are saying that you were using AB to set a custom fan profile, yet you were not having it start with Windows before? This is surprising to...

A CALL TO ARMS: The likely power-consumption driver bug for SLI 970/980

The fact that Hibernate doesn't have the same problem is strange. It seems that there is some service or software starting up (or perhaps not starting up) that's causing the problem. I have read that sometimes you have to add a delay to Afterburner to make sure its OC settings take effect. Maybe...

Ok, given that I have very little idea about the inner workings of HDDs, beyond the ultra-basics, what does that mean? Did you like the Purples, for desktop storage? The "good magic" part of your post makes me think so, but please elaborate. The reason I am considering Purple is that, as I...

A CALL TO ARMS: The likely power-consumption driver bug for SLI 970/980
