[Techspot] GTX 780 retrospective - How the Mighty Have Fallen!

Crippling is not the same as not optimizing. The whole point of Maxwell was fixing their execution to front end ratio. They basically made 2/3 of the resources get very close to what Kepler had then they made it clock faster along with better memory utilization. They arent obligated to optimize...

    AMD X399 !!!!!

Thats due to Bulldozer being garbage. There was an easy optimization due to using what they called "soft flip-flops" which are easier to implement but use more power. And Bulldozer could already clock at 5Ghz under water, it just used excessive power to do so. Zen hits a wall at 4.1Ghz.

Your Take on Ryzen? Worth buying or stick to Intel

Would like to see it tested in games with disabled SMT and 3000Mhz+ memory to see if it benefits. It looks worth it for anyone that doesn't just game but we'll see if anything fixes the poor gaming performance.

Why did AMD release bulldozer if they can still make good CPU's?

I think they already had a contract for the Titan supercomputer so they had to get something for it. They were led to believe Bulldozer was better than it ended up too.

    New Zen microarchitecture details

8 core Zen should end up being a fairly small chip in the mid 1XXmm^2. If it doesn't have 256-bit datapaths for AVX, I wouldn't be surprised if it clocked at mid to high 3's. HW-E has a wide AVX implementation and is made with more connectivity, and it still gets above 3Ghz at 140W. I...

    New Zen microarchitecture details

Zen is supposed to be 40% above Excavator, not piledriver. Which on core to core basis would be around 60% above Piledriver. If they gain 60%, lose the performance loss from modules, gain SMT, and have it overclock over 4Ghz , they should be competitive enough to at least price against a...

The GPU Vendor Bias Admission Thread

I was beginning to lean towards nvidia in 2014 with Maxwell, but then the GTX 970 incident killed it for me. Hardly put a dent in the sales if at all. Really want AMD to succeed with Zen and Polaris. Their current offerings are either mediocre or uncompetitive(GPUs or CPUs).

Should Intel ditch "Celeron", or does it serve a purpose?

I'd rather see Atom receive a big upgrade and have a quad minimum lineup. i9 for LGA 2011 equivalent. Everything below i3 becomes Atom. Remove Pentium and Celeron altogether.

    What apu are they using?

The best part is the OLED screen. The worst part is the 1080p screen. Intel's 14nm fanless Core chips can barely play Dota 2 at 1366x768. They're basically stealing, unless you consider extra cinematic a frame-rate.

[Techpowerup] AMD "Zen" CPU Prototypes Tested, "Meet all Expectations"

Except you calculated a 3.8Ghz Zen will equal a 4.8Ghz Skylake because Skylake's SMT penalty is much bigger than Carrizo's CMT penalty... If you scale up Carrizo's score: 13146+40% IPC+30% SMT+26.3% clock= 30218 and even if the CMT penalty isn't part of that 40%: 30218+10%= 33240, Zen would...

[Techpowerup] AMD "Zen" CPU Prototypes Tested, "Meet all Expectations"

SMT performance is only about 30% better in cinebench. With 4 cores/4 threads that Skylake would be around 30k, which makes its score above 1500 per thread per Ghz.

[Techpowerup] AMD "Zen" CPU Prototypes Tested, "Meet all Expectations"

Intel hasn't had a different core for server before. Assuming Skylake-E is a Xeon under a different name, and David Kanter's suspicion on the L2 is correct, it will have higher performance per clock. But it is only an assumption. How much would an 8-way 512KB cache affect performance over the...

    Was brazos a bad product?

Compared to the trash that was Atom at the time, it was far better. If it ran Windows well enough, then it was at least ok. I don't consider Flash part of Windows. I agree with Shiva on many points. Brazos 80SP wasn't able to game and would be overkill for 2D, and having a full SOC would...

    Skylake owners thread

That's if you're getting proper heat transfer. If you put the cooler directly on a 600mm^2 GPU, it'd easily dissipate 340W with a low delta like those. Look at the testing methodology: http://www.anandtech.com/show/7738/closed-loop-aio-liquid-coolers/8 They created what is essentially a...

Intel Cannonlake 10 nm delayed, introducing KabyLake

They do not want to threaten higher markets with cheap multicore CPUs. Offering more and more cores at mainstream prices would shrink their revenue as those that need the CPU performance just buy cheaper. Die space is relatively cheap for them, but they have to segment the market. There are...

Intel Iris Pro 6200 is something else

The 750 Ti is on a far inferior process and is twice as fast at 60W. The Ti is good enough for current 1080p, unlike Iris Pro. Crystalwell+DDR3 has enough bandwidth to roughly equal GM107. An ~80mm2 30W 14nm GPU should at least be able to come close. Yes, this may be a solution for laptops...

Intel Iris Pro 6200 is something else

Not sure why anyone would be excited about this. I've been waiting for a decent IGP, but this has 2.4x the EUs+ improvements to arch+Crystalwell+14nm, but it's still less than 2x better than Haswell GT2, even if it's 65W vs 84/88W. It's around an R7 250(also loses to the 240 depending on the...

Fudzilla: New AMD Zen APU boasts up to 16 cores (plus Greenland GPU with HBM)

[TechReport]ARM unveils Cortex-A72 CPU, Mali-T880 graphics, and more

A few more nodes down the line and 3-4Ghz is within reach in a phone/tablet(turbo) with a lower performance core than Intel's Big cores. Similar levels of power would be only if they made it as wide, and Intel is also bringing 3-4Ghz down to that envelope(meaning each node is faster for the same...

[Sweclockers] Radeon 380X coming late spring, almost 50% improvement over 290X

These TDP arguments never go anywhere. I was just pointing out, don't use peak load power as some sort of metric. Even AMD goes over their rated TDP for peak power; it was probably only that high for milisecond(s), which PSUs are supposed to be built to handle, and you should really have...

[Sweclockers] Radeon 380X coming late spring, almost 50% improvement over 290X

Anyone know if replacing the TIM on an old board would help stability? I've actually already done so on the northbridge. I didn't replace the rubber tape that was on the MOSFETs; it held up really well and didn't seem to need replacement(though I might be wrong?). Took 10-20 minutes to...

GTX 960 is expected to launch next month.

I don't remember people not advocating Fermi when AMD had better efficiency, which Russian pointed out. People bought 560 Ti's and 570's despite AMD offering a 6950 2GB that was unlockable&more efficient for the 560 price. They even started running into Vram bottlenecks fairly quickly. Now...

GTX 960 is expected to launch next month.

The 960 is essentially the 770 moving down to $200. This is Nvidia pricing so AMD will typically offer an equivalently priced solution while being better in some aspect(this time ram). With 290's at $250, nobody should really buy the 960, but tell that to all the Battlefield players I ask who...

THe Sandia Cooler - Breakthrough in Air Cooling design

I'm assuming this would be a lot more effective than the massive heatsinks that barely heat up with ever lower power chips? Say broadwell uses only 100W and using a big "250W" dissipation unit you still can't get it below 100C because the die area isn't very big and can't effectively heat a...
