Board on a budget...

Get a $76 Shuttle AK31v3.1. I've built 3 systems with the AK31 series and am waiting for my 4th to be delivered.

VCOOL?! Athlon Cooling

I've used Vcool for 5 months, very lite overhead, during a typical night, playing mp3's while working the web my cpu is less than 1 degree C higher than case temp. But I use a heat pipe and that makes a big difference.

Yeah, that fan has to suck. Otherwise the air hitting the dense wall of pins will stall and the fan will eat it's own backwash. But take note: air velocity is more important than volume. A 60mm 36cfm 6800 rpm fan will out perform an 80mm 53cfm 4100 rpm on an 8045 (I've tried that!) but will make...

Just put the nylon washers over the resistors and tighten until just snug. Lots of stuff by the holes The spring loaded Chipset H/S lugs are no problem. The finished Product. This one kicks Alpha butt!

You really have to be careful installing the Alpha heat sink standoffs on the AK31 as there are a few surface mounted components that can be crushed under the nylon washers. The chipset fan mounting lug and the green capacitor are not much trouble. I had a 8045 on mine for several months until...

Yeah, it makes a lot of noise, thats why I'm going to try a 80 to 60mm funnel and use a 53cfm Sanyo-Denki at 7 volts. The funnel should be here in a couple of days.

Black dots off the t-bird :-( (And one other question on a peltier)

Youre going to make a lot more noise air cooling a peltier not to mention higher case temperatures and increased power supply heat. I used to use peltiers on 300-450mhz oc'ed Celerons and it worked only because of the low wattage of those intel cpu's.

severely hot t-bird... what can i do ?

I just replaced my alpha 8045 with the new heatpipe from coolermaster, it kicks alpha butt. But true, get rid of that pink thermal pad, it's not meant to be re-used.

Should I upgrade from Win98 to XP?

"XP sucks, upgrade to 2k and get the service packs, works better" ......... XP IS A WIN2000 SERVICE PACK!!!!!!! I still have 98se on another hd and I prefer that OS for internet use.

It seems common that the only "compatible" drivers for use with XP are those on the XP. But I have a new X-Gamer 5.1 not in use because of the difficulty SBLive! cards have with Via chipsets. Dont count on new drivers to fix hardware incompatibilities. Let us know how your SB Live! works with...
