100+ hours of recording on varying quality settings (though I've never gone above the 4.2gb per hour) and I've yet to have a signal noticeable frame drop. I've yet to have a case where I had a noticeable skipped frame when watching the recorded material.
Well I haven't tried a 9700 AIW, but all the prior versions would occasionally have frame-drops which never happen with the Hauppauge cards. But perhaps the newer AIW's are getting there.
Though I'd still not use one, hehe. I think the combo of a good videocard + a hauppauge is a better...
It depends on how much you like to tweak and how much you are willing to spend.
If "not a whole lot" on either question then you aren't ready to make a real HTPC.

I'll 2nd CaptnKirk and add that this is the case I got, though I added two fan holes to my door's window. (1 exhaust at the top-center of the window, 1 intake at the bottom-center)
Since I'm using the 462+ I'm going to recommend it :)
It does a pretty damn good job IMO. My cpu is running somewhere between 33*C & 43*C (damn Asus & their crappy temperature monitor) on full load and this is with an OC from 2ghz to 2.4ghz on a 190mhz (380mhz DDR) bus.
But the biggest reason...
Well it doesn't lock up completely, but does lag quite a bit. Course that's probably because the test is taking so much of the Cpu.
Only other things I did, besides play with the multiplier & voltage, was disable some of the things on the board I'm not going to use. The Audio, the 3com Network...

Using WinXp, it only takes like 20 seconds for my PC to boot up fully and be ready to work :)
But regardless a CD should be an OPTION. If I don't know the exact spelling of the name but know what the person's address is or what the number looks like, it would be a million times easier to find...
I'd ask the same question about Phone Books. It would be a hell of a lot easier to get a searchable CD version of the phone book. I truly don't understand why that option (to my knowledge) has never been given.

My bet is there will be some 266mhz fsb TBred's and at some point they will start doing 333mhz fsb TBred's which will probably be the starting point for the next Athlon (*Barton?*) as well.
