  1. The AnandTech Introduction Thread: Get To Know Your Peers

Hi there! I'm a long term reader and somewhat infrequent forum poster. Live and work in California but am originally from UK.
  2. KVM switch recommendations

I'm looking to get a KVM switch so I can have my gaming PC and laptop docking station all hooked up to the same monitor/mouse/keyboard. Any recommendations or things to think about? Should I pay extra for Dynamic Device Mapping (DDM) or is it not worth it? Requirements... DisplayPort 2 ports...

  4. 4690k or 4790 for GTX 970

You won't see much of a difference with gaming, but if you use it for productivity then hyperthreading on the i7 might be nice. One thing you might want to consider though is a solid state drive. Will definitely make a big difference!
  5. GTX 980 SLI Build

The rest of your build will be absolutely fine, just see what frame rates your getting and switch to the 980 if required. Then spend $2k in 2015 :)
  6. Insanity, or great idea?

So HDMI 2.0 is seeing product launches, which means 4K@60Hz finally. Is there any good reason I can't hook one of these up to a monster gaming rig and start 4k gaming? What's the benefit of using a "proper" monitor? DisplayPort is one thing, and all the large (30"+) 4K monitors have professional...
  7. GTX 980 SLI Build

I'm no expert of SLI, but I don't think you can mix cards like that. You could switch them both out for a 980 but at 1080p, they probably still work fine. Is it struggling with the DK2? If so then go for it, but if not your rig is pretty insane; If I were you I'd wait until 20nm hits.
  8. GTX 980 SLI Build

There will be a new series when they move to 20nm process from 28nm, which will be almost certainly be some time in 2015. They also have the option of adding new cards above the current line up in response to whatever AMD comes out with next (R9 390 etc). Given the low TDPs of the 970/980, this...
  9. GTX 980 SLI Build

Yeah, what DSF says. The consumer version won't be out for a long while yet so if that's the main reason you can hold off for a bit. I hear that the Oculus team use Falcon Talon pre-builds in house that look like this... i7-4930K ASUS X79 DELUXE Titan Black CRUCIAL 32GB 1866MHZ Crucial M550...
  10. DDR4 - awesome or meh?

So DDR4 is just on the horizon. To me 4 is a higher number than 3, by 33% in fact, so this seems awesome. However are we really going to see much real world benefit? In the light of articles like this on memory scaling I'm not sure how much the extra MHz will be of use. Am I missing something...
  11. Full home audio solution

OK, cool. I shall investigate further. Thanks again, very helpful!
  12. Full home audio solution

Thanks purbeast! Hadn't seen that one before, looks like exactly what I was thinking of :) Do you know if the latency issue is specific to the Sonos, or is that a generic problem due to wireless?
  13. Full home audio solution

Hey there audiophiles, I'm looking to deck out my house with a halfway decent sound system with a set of speakers in each room (bedroom, kitchen, dining room, lounge etc) but controlled from a central unit. So if I'm listening to something in the lounge and then decide to head to the bedroom...
  14. not sure if HT but - going to mars?

The race to the moon was indeed highly political. Spending a similar amount of GDP is not currently feasible, but that can change in the future. You only had to listen to some of the themes from the recent Presidential Elections to see that China looms large on the political landscape. As...

You can track how much work I'm doing by how few PPD I'm getting :D
  16. CPU Utilization

Disable GPU client seems to have fixed the issue. Phew!
  17. CPU Utilization

Maybe the GPU client is the issue; it's mentioned in that thread and I didn't have it active before. Will see what happens. Thanks TeAm!
  18. Anyone phasing out a working GPU? Deal has been made!

Shed a small tear as I removed "Steve" this morning... Safe travels old friend *sniffles*
  19. Anyone phasing out a working GPU? Deal has been made!

I believe it's a Sapphire HD5850 Toxic Edition ;) Will be the start to my HD89xx fund!
  20. Anyone phasing out a working GPU? Deal has been made!

I'm not sure how much postage is San Jose -> Seattle, but I have a Sapphire HD5850 Toxic Edition that I'd be ok to let go to a happy home. Crossfire on a secondary system feels a little like overkill :) I'll PM you some details...
  21. CPU Utilization

Hey team, I noticed my F@H ppd dropping off a cliff and decided to junk my current clients and install the newer v7.1 Windows client. Good news: ppd recovered nicely (slightly higher even) and I'm back on my march up the project board. Bad news: I have to work. Previously I was running...
  22. Another surgey for me

All the best for your continued recovery Mark!
  23. New crunching box

Quick update - Arctic Cooling Accelero Xtreme 7970 installation went smoothly and my box is quiet enough that in a dead silent apartment in the middle of the night you can hear a faint whir from the box... when it's running CPU/GPU at 100%... when you're standing less than a metre away... Very...

  29. New crunching box

OK well it looks like the decision has been taken out of my hands now anyway... girlfriend just called to say she bought me a HD7970. Will have to make do :)
  30. New crunching box

Oh and slightly related question... if I'm running the F@H GPU client as well as SMP, should I run it with a "-smp 7" and leave the other one to fill the GPU, or just the usual -smp and just assume it knows best? Or with the GPU client at a higher priority? Thanks TeAm!
  31. New crunching box

Thank you, sir :) I've never used aftermarket graphics cooling before; probably because it looked super expensive back when I was a student. Wow though, those Arctic coolers look immense! The Accelero Extreme II is out in a couple of weeks. Hooking that up to something like a shiny new GTX 670...
  32. New crunching box

Thanks ZipSpeed! I was looking at that one and also the GIGABYTE GV-R797OC; any thoughts on differences? Do you think that might be overkill when it's only hooked up to a 1080p HDTV? Any idea if the Sapphire HD7870OC is as quiet?
