Let's pretend for a little, and say that Gore were President now....

Hmmmm, DefRef, you don't choose to respond to any of my points but instead resort to being sarcastic. Interesting strategy. Are you by chance 6 years old?

Let's pretend for a little, and say that Gore were President now....

Warning: long post (waiting for KDE to compile: that's some slow-ass sh!t). << Energy: Gore would've slammed price caps on in a heartbeat (liberal compassion) AND would've nationalized the energy industry to SHUT IT DOWN. Gore is/was/will always be an environmental extremist and is little...

Group Wants Constitution to Protect Pigs

Why make pigs a special case? What about horses, dogs, cats and other animals? The constitution protects "inalienable human rights as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Keep it that way. If you want to protect animals, campaign for a new animal rights bill!

Compiling a new kernel in linux - and XFree86 all of sudden doesn't work?

Is your graphics card AGP? If so, did you compile in support for AGP [assuming your compiling a new kernel]? I kept forgetting to do this when I first started compiling kernels with an AGP-equipped system. I'm using Windows so I can't tell you exactly where the option is in the configuration.

    Weird Gigabyte 7DXR reboot problem

Hi folks I got a Gigabyte 7DXR today (the one with the RAID on it), took it out of its box, installed it and hey presto, it works first time and boots into Windows 98 successfully. However... 1. When I try and turn the computer off using the switch at the front, it won't turn off! It either...

what has been the most unreliable h/w and s/w component in your systems?

The most unreliable component in my system is me, as I keep breaking things - installations of Linux, Windows, bending pins on floppy drives and so on. My processor got fried on Tuesday so I've just ordered another one of those... and a new motherboard. Unreliable bits: 1. My Laserjet 5L...

    Mac G4 500mhz = 1.2ghz Thunderbird ?

LOL! Does it come in a choice of colors? BTW, I used to own a 667Mhz G4 Mac and it was miles slower even than my old 800Mhz Tbird system... It was very pretty though (all style and no substance).

About DVDRoms.. Just bought one.. What are 'Regions'? and more Qs

The whole of the US (and rest of North America) is Region 1 - there's no East coast/West coast distinction. Europe and Japan are Region 2, so unless your player is modified to be region-free, don't buy any DVDs from Europe/Japan/anywhere else if you ever come over on vacation...

    Spoofing MAC addresses

Hi I want to set up a small network at home (three PCs and one Mac) so that they can share a broadband cable modem connection. I am going to buy a router - Linksys BEFSR41, a bunch of Cat 5 cables and a NCI card for each PC (Mac has built-in Ethernet). So far as I can find out, I need to plug...

Can Linux "see" hard drive on a Promise Ultra100?

Yes, it should do, but you might have to hook it up to your motherboard whilst you install Linux and then swap the drive over (that's what I had to do with Suse 7 but it might be different on other distros). You may also have to recompile the kernel to include the Promise driver.

Poll: What is your favorite OS?

    1. RISC OS (it looks good and it's had anti-aliased fonts since 1988, it's all in ROM so it's lightening fast and it hardly ever crashes. Unforunately you can't run it on PCs or Macs). 2. OS X 3. Linux 4. Win 3.1 (yes, really: no stupid wizards or bloat).

Calling all Linux gurus: Can I get my Highpoint 370 ATA100 controller working under Linux?

I used to have an Abit KT7-RAID motherboard which (as you probably know) has an onboard HPT370. You need to recompile your kernel if it doesn't work out of the box and if you can't find a pre-built one (make sure it's 2.4.0 or better) and turn on support for the Highpoint. There are plenty of...

    Pics for WinXP

I hope not (it might be a useful feature) but Bill will probably not want to get indundated with bug reports and people saying "This is a POS, Bill, give me Windows 98/2K/3.1 back." WinXP is a triumph of style over substance. M$ are good at adding features for stupid people who think...

    Linux + PowerMac G4 = ?

Thanks for that, BOFH. Presumably the most difficult thing to get to work is X, the rest of the stuff I'd imagine works fine (e.g. compilers, shells, etc, etc). I'll have a look at my current CVS of XFree86 4.0.2 and see if there's any info in the help files. There seem to be three distros...

    Linux + PowerMac G4 = ?

Has anyone got any experiences of using Linux with an Apple Mac G4? I am going to buy a new G4-667Mhz (one of the recently announced new models) and would like to run Linux on it like I do with my PC. Any constructive comments (i.e. no Mac v PC flame wars) would be welcomed...

X BOX : Microsoft may have to change the name

I seem to remember that they had exactly the same problem with Internet Explorer. Some guy had been using the name for a while and along comes Bill and starts using it too. The guy got a nice payout (can't remember how much - $3M???). X-Box is a stupid name anyway. It sounds like something you...

Try here. It says (amongst other things) that Whistler Personal is to be provided as an UPDATE (my caps) for W98/Me users only. Which makes me think it'll suck big time as I've read lots of posts on here and other places about problems in Windows when you put one version over the top of...

Hello? Where are all the PS2's Sony promised us?

It's all Saddam's fault, remember... I personally think that PS2 is better than what XBox is going to be. First of all you have all the 100s of games already out plus all the new ones. Second, Sony has a far better brand image (i.e. it has one) than Microsoft. When I think about Microsoft, I...

How do i change the resolution when not in X server?

Go into a console and type "xf86config". Then follow the instructions; it's not the most user friendly program there is (and you'll need to know your monitor's horizontal and vertical rate thingies). If you're feeling brave, you could always edit the XF86Config file (probably in /etc/X11).

Top things you HATE about your OS

Win 98SE: 1. Slow, even though I've got an 800Mhz Tbird running at 900Mhz. 2. Thrashes my hard drives too much. 3. Damn ugly: nasty little icons, amateur looking fonts (especially at low point sizes: it looks like someone drew them all in Paintbrush (or whatever it's called) on a 486 10 years...

    Linux interface questions...

Yes, you can pick and choose. You can use any window manager; the KDE one is not tied to KDE; you can take it out and use Enlightenment instead. KDE chose to write their own window manager, instead of using one like Enlightenment, WindowMaker or Afterstep. The advantage of using the KDE one...

Mysteries behind AMD approved power supply list? Time for another Anandtech PS roundup?

I've got an Enermax 330W PSU and it works just fine... Perhaps the list hasn't been updated yet... I originally bought a 300W PC Power and Cooling PSU which was on the list but when it arrived it didn't have the bottom fan on it so I changed it for the Enermax - don't read too much into the...

Linux Kernel 2.4.0 or the final version is out !!!!!!!!

I'm currently running the 2.4.0-prerelease on SuSE 7; I don't think it makes much difference which distro you have, but if it's fairly old you might want to update things like modutils and so on. How to build a kernel? Download the kernel, go into a shell (bash or tcsh), unpack it with tar fzxv...

    GNOME and KDE?

I think there are a few "issues" with RH7.0. They used a development version of the GNU C compiler (version 2.96), that they shouldn't have (I think) which had compatibility problems with systems running 2.95 and future versions (not out yet). It's probably been fixed now though. There...

Poll: What Internet Browser do you use in Linux?

nexus9... You can use CVSup to make sure you've got the latest (and greatest?) version of KDE by downloading it directly from the developers' CVS repository. The one flaw is that you're dealing with development versions so they might not compile or will crash more than a release version, but I...

Poll: What do you all think of Opera?

    What's an ATA?

A couple of years back I came across the abbreviation "ATAPI", which was used in the context of CD-Roms. I think it used to stand for ATA Packet Interface. pm says that "ATA" stands for "AT Attachment". When IBM ruled the world, it produced an XT and an AT model...
