Why make pigs a special case? What about horses, dogs, cats and other animals? The constitution protects "inalienable human rights as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness". Keep it that way. If you want to protect animals, campaign for a new animal rights bill!

Compiling a new kernel in linux - and XFree86 all of sudden doesn't work?

Is your graphics card AGP? If so, did you compile in support for AGP [assuming your compiling a new kernel]? I kept forgetting to do this when I first started compiling kernels with an AGP-equipped system. I'm using Windows so I can't tell you exactly where the option is in the configuration.

Mac G4 500mhz = 1.2ghz Thunderbird ?

LOL! Does it come in a choice of colors? BTW, I used to own a 667Mhz G4 Mac and it was miles slower even than my old 800Mhz Tbird system... It was very pretty though (all style and no substance).

The whole of the US (and rest of North America) is Region 1 - there's no East coast/West coast distinction. Europe and Japan are Region 2, so unless your player is modified to be region-free, don't buy any DVDs from Europe/Japan/anywhere else if you ever come over on vacation...

Can Linux "see" hard drive on a Promise Ultra100?

Yes, it should do, but you might have to hook it up to your motherboard whilst you install Linux and then swap the drive over (that's what I had to do with Suse 7 but it might be different on other distros). You may also have to recompile the kernel to include the Promise driver.

Thanks for that, BOFH. Presumably the most difficult thing to get to work is X, the rest of the stuff I'd imagine works fine (e.g. compilers, shells, etc, etc). I'll have a look at my current CVS of XFree86 4.0.2 and see if there's any info in the help files. There seem to be three distros...

Which Window Manager do you like???

WindowMaker or Sawfish. I used to use KDE-2 but got fed up with its quirkiness, bloat and bad design... Fisher is right, WindowMaker rocks... (and it looks nice).

How do i change the resolution when not in X server?

Go into a console and type "xf86config". Then follow the instructions; it's not the most user friendly program there is (and you'll need to know your monitor's horizontal and vertical rate thingies). If you're feeling brave, you could always edit the XF86Config file (probably in /etc/X11).

XFree86 4.0.2 out with support for more cards
