Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

I know that, but even with the same number of ROPs, TMUs, etc. had it been able to do FP+FP+INT at the same time, the performance would've probably still been quite higher, even if not all the cores were fully utilized. It was certainly not worth the added chip size, complexity, and hence cost...

Question 'Ampere'/Next-gen gaming uarch speculation thread

So this is why 30 series cards' gaming performance is so much lower than the max theoretical compute performance. So they did it to specifically enable FP+FP. I suppose this is probably aimed at scientific calculations, etc? Are there any desktop use cases where this could come into play? Is...

Hardwareluxx too made a similar diagram: Nvidia has stated this: "To accomplish this goal, the Ampere SM includes new datapath designs for FP32 and INT32 operations. One datapath in each partition consists of 16 FP32 CUDA Cores capable of executing 16 FP32 operations per clock. Another...

Question Noisy Gammaxx 300 cooler fan

My fan has started to make a whining-like noise, even when idling. It's quite unbearable. It used to be rather silent. http://www.deepcool.com/product/cpucooler/2013-12/7_481.shtml Is it safe to pull the fan out? There is no sticker on top of it. It has a hydro bearing. What's the correct...

These slides look suspicious to me. Why do 9500, 9500T, 9700 and 9700T have HT? Are they really going to use 6+2 dies for quad and even dual core models?!

Question How to connect 2pin DC 12V fan to motherboard/smps as a secondary fan?

You are looking at the wrong manual. That picture is not of his motherboard. His model does support PWM for the case fan header. IINM all manuals say +12V, so you cannot tell from that if the voltage can be altered or not. You can tell from the bios settings though, and as you stated, that...

Question How to connect 2pin DC 12V fan to motherboard/smps as a secondary fan?

Download the board's user manual. Find out which pin supplies the voltage (12V) and which one is ground (GND), then connect the fan accordingly. The black wire is ground. You just attach it. The connector's shape makes it obvious. Obviously.

Question Who's the original manufacturer of these cases?

I came across these cases on a local online store. They are branded "Green" and are quite cheaper than established brands but the quality seems fine. I really doubt they, themselves, made these cases but ordered them from a case OEM, probably from china. I'm not that familiar with cases. Can...

Why xbox one backwards compatibility downloads the game instead of copying disc data to HDD?

Why are you mocking me? It's a genuine question since this emulator is unique among emulators. I'm not saying it's doing a bad job; just interested to know why it doesn't do direct emulation.
  15. E

Why xbox one backwards compatibility downloads the game instead of copying disc data to HDD?

What? How is it answered? All emulators in existence are able to use the original data from the discs and do not need to download anything. X1 uses an emulator and yet is unable to install the game from the disc and has to download it in full. Why? If it's an emulator, then why can't it read the...

Why xbox one backwards compatibility downloads the game instead of copying disc data to HDD?

Umm, xbox one's backward compatibility is done through an emulator, meaning the ISA difference is already covered. The mystery to me is why it cannot install from the disc. All emulators out there can use the original game data. X1 is the only emulator that does not install from disc.
  17. E

Why xbox one backwards compatibility downloads the game instead of copying disc data to HDD?

Emulators like epsxe and pcsx2 use the original disc data. How come X1's emulator can't do the same? IINM it's the only emulator out there that is unable to use the original game data from the disc.

Well, yes, that's what I said. Also 3200 CL16 performs about the same as 3000 CL15. My point was that very high frequency memories are quite expensive and not worth their price.

Want to sell my Ryzen 1700 and get a 8700k. Is it stupid or greedy?

Well, yes, because SKL-X had a massive increase in L2 cache, so such a big L3 was perhaps not needed anymore. An 8 core CFL would be 16 MB; a 2 MB to core ratio, as it is with other non-HEDT i7s. Doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary, combined with the usual small L2 cache.

Want to sell my Ryzen 1700 and get a 8700k. Is it stupid or greedy?

I'm not versed in cache inner workings. Why might they "need" to change the cache hierarchy? Is there a limitation to the current approach? Haswell-E and Broadwell-E use the normal cache system, right? There are 8 core models of them.

Want to sell my Ryzen 1700 and get a 8700k. Is it stupid or greedy?

A theory; maybe they wanted to keep compatibility with the former gen, skylake, and not break their pattern. It is also possible that 200 boards were already in advanced stages of development with mainboard makers, so maybe changing specs midway was not a good idea. I don't remember a board...

Do you think AMD will eventually enable all 32 PCIe lanes for the CPU die on socket AM4?

Those are chipset connected lanes, not CPU connected lanes. I thought we were talking about CPU lanes. EDIT: I actually missed the "chipset" part in your first post. My mistake. Need to pay more attention.
  24. E

Do you think AMD will eventually enable all 32 PCIe lanes for the CPU die on socket AM4?

24? I thought the max was 20 total, 16 for PCIe x16 slots, and 4 for DMI/chipset. P.S. The 24 number for AM4 is rather misleading. 4 lanes are used for the chipset, so 20 lanes are user available. EDIT: I misread. Disregard.

Intel Chips With “Vega Inside” Coming Soon?

Then it would be called an "On-Package" GPU. I've never seen on-package chips being referred to as discrete. Have I missed any? Want to sell my Ryzen 1700 and get a 8700k. Is it stupid or greedy?

Umm, 200 series boards were meant for KBL and support all KBL CPUs. The same with older series chipsets, as far as I know. By that pattern, a 300 series board should at least support all CFL CPUs, current and future. So expecting 8 core CFL support for Z370 is not a radical thought. Saying all...

Intel Chips With “Vega Inside” Coming Soon?

I think you are asking the wrong questions. What you should ask is "What does KBL-H + dGFX really mean?". Is it referring to the NUC itself or the CPU? If it is referring to the CPU, then why call it "dGFX"? Doesn't "d" stand for discrete, as in a separate component from the CPU?

    Intel "Coffee Lake" Builders Thread

Why some people are so fixated on doing "max OC"?! Why not go for 4.8 or even 4.7 GHz? 5.0 is just ~4% higher than 4.8 and the performance difference is not going to always be 4% either. IMO that 4% is not worth the hassle of de-lidding and getting monster coolers, etc.

Are 4C/4T quads obsolete for gaming?

It's not just about the maps. It's about how long they played and recorded the FPS, how much of it was heavy sections and how much was lighter sections. All of these would affect the total framerate. I doubt they'd publish that score if they thought it was false. If you think they made a...

Are 4C/4T quads obsolete for gaming?

Average framerates are not the only factor, yes, but they are far from "useless". Still, if we compare 99th numbers at 720 in other games besides BF1, 8400 is 14%-20% higher, except for Prey and TW:WH; and Ghost Recon is 38% higher for 8400 but I think it's because of bad ryzen optimization, so...

No doubt. Not only games are better optimized for latest CPUs, 8 GB of DDR2 @ 872 would severely impact the framerate. Pfft, amateur. /s Actually, joking aside, it's still quite good for something from early 2008. A 7600K does about 683 and 184. That's not even twice the score after almost 9 years. How many fold did GPUs increase in performance in that time period?

Are 4C/4T quads obsolete for gaming?

Again, it won't show the exact improvement delta of the future, but it would indicate that if a CPU is faster in low res tests, then there is a very good chance it would also be with a faster GPU in normal resolutions. Sure, some future games might be so GPU heavy that the faster CPU won't have...

This is sort of like what happened with 14nm and broadwell. First broadwells were released in Sep(?)/Oct 2014 as Y parts. U parts were in Jan 2015. A few H parts in June and that's about it, I think. They gave up on broadwell. It took intel a year to get 14nm under control, with a broad release...

I only know about this video mentioning it: https://youtu.be/HUU_XJeSLqA?t=339 ... but they did not say what the achieved BCLK was, which is the most important metric to know. Are 4C/4T quads obsolete for gaming?

So just because the delta in the future might not be as large as the delta now in 720 tests, I should buy the slower CPU in games for the same money?! Do you really think that's logical?! Since when lower performance is better? I never said the difference you see now would EXACTLY be the same...

Are 4C/4T quads obsolete for gaming?

What you are saying has ZERO to do with this discussion. I never said future GPUs would be "handicapped", or older CPUs would be "trash". Stop putting words in my mouth. I'm merely saying that for a certain budget for gaming, one would want to get the fastest CPU in order to get the maximum...

That's not exactly the subject here but ok, let's compare (based on newegg prices); in BF1 multiplayer at 1080p, an 8400 is 23% faster than a 1600X, and its 99th percentile is 10% higher. A 1600 costs $215, a 1600X $220, and an 8400 $190. Now obviously this is only the CPU. As of now the only...
