Question Low wattage PSU for a NAS

I have an old i7 2600K+MOBO+RAM I wanna turn into a NAS. I need a cheap reliable power supply. Drives would be 10W a piece peak, so even 400W is overkill. All the low-watt ones I was looking for, people on the internet keep saying are shit. Looking for recommendations, keeping in mind I'm in...

    Solved! Mechanics of NAND endurance

Well, I can't delete the thread, so I'll just answer my own question: It's based on the operating mode (barring any details I'm not aware off). So implies this article at least: https://www.anandtech.com/show/5067/understanding-tlc-nand/2

    Solved! Mechanics of NAND endurance

Is the amount of program/erase cycles a cell is rated for inherent to the cell or based on its operating mode? So I know there are drives that can operate their cells in many-level or single-level mode. Say we have a QLC drive, and its cells are rated for 1000 p/e cycles. Does that mean that...

    Question Anandtech GPU reviews?

That's, uh... honestly not the response I expected. A shame. Oh well, I suppose there are plenty of other media outlets to look to. GN comes to mind. All I can offer here is some hollow internet sympathy from halfway around the world for that person.

    Question Anandtech GPU reviews?

Anandtech has been my go-to tech site for a quite a while, and I was expecting to get a GPU review when nVidia's 3000 series came out, and was rather surprised when none came out. Ok, I said to myself, it's expected for AMD to release their new lineup fairly soon as well - maybe they're waiting...

Question Why is the android small tablet market dead?

I very much do not like devices I cannot own (i.e. Apple devices, or anything with a locked bootloader for that matter). Not to mention I have never used anything from apple in my life. So the ipad mini is out. My old one is a nexus 7 (2013) and it has served me honourably, but it's been...

Question Why is the android small tablet market dead?

I doubt phones will ever get above the 7 inch mark, at that point they're unpocketable. (Dimensions, not screen-size, foldables incoming.) Besides, phones racing to the tablet form factor means better specs, but for tablets that means suckier specs..... WHAT? And who's talking about TVs. I read...

Question Why is the android small tablet market dead?

My old tablet is struggling a lot these days and I've been thinking of finally replacing it with something newer. But... the market seems to have up and died. I mean, looking for an upgrade on my old one in the same form factor(<10 inch) from the past 2 years (2018+) what are my choices? 8...

Question Migrating windows install (partition/bootloader question)

I see where the confusion is coming from. I have an old sata SSD with an old windows install. I got a new nvme ssd and put a new windows install on it. Take a look at the image. My question is - what happens when I format Disk 0? (Bonus: How does the Windows boot process work anyway?) I've...

Question Migrating windows install (partition/bootloader question)

Got a new NVMe to boot from instead of old sata SSD. The situation should be pretty obvious here. What does the EFI partition contain anyway? From what I've seen, you can't boot without it. Now between both drives - there's only one of those, on the old drive. I'm afraid if I destroy it, I...

Question Migrating windows install (partition/bootloader question)

So I recently upgraded some parts, including getting an NVMe SSD, which I'd like to make into my primary system drive. Currently I'm dual-booting the old and the new windows, while in the process of transferring all settings, documents and data. One thing I've noticed while playing around with...

    Question 9900K cooling advice

I believe I do, pretty good airflow actually. However I must say, I'm not convinced by AIOs. Just to be clear, I only saw cores dip below 4700 MHz (the stock rated all-core levels) very briefly during stress test load, during the heaviest AVX2 phase. Don't think I need to undervolt here. Been...

    Question 9900K cooling advice

I recently upgraded to the latest and greatest shiny. So of course I decided to test the system. I'm using y-cruncher stress tester and CPUID HWMonitor to monitor temps. Stock settings, no overclocking whatsoever. And I'm somewhat concerned that I'm seeing temps to the tune of 115 °C on the...

Free remote access software (for use over Internet)?

Generally teamviewer is free for personal use. However they have been known to be somewhat aggressive with flagging systems/accounts as commercial use. If you use it for personal, write to their support and they should be able to turn de-flag your account.

Question New "features" post Win v1709 mentioned in this article?

This article: https://www.anandtech.com/show/14043/upgrading-from-an-intel-core-i7-2600k-testing-sandy-bridge-in-2019/5 says the following: What are these new "features" the author is talking about? (Also, isn't the latest major update RS5? Aka v1809.)

    Building a home server

ARK says it doesn't. The thing is, you can put ECC memory, and it will work. It just won't do any error correcting. So what's the point? Also, I just found out that HGST is actually owned by Western Digital. And which HGST drives would you recommend? I think Ultrastar are too expensive for me...

    Building a home server

You're basically telling me to not reuse anything(the CPU does not support ECC ram). That's not the point of the exercise. No matter how cheap old ECC ram is, not spending even that much is even cheaper. And there is nothing special about ZFS over any other filesystem that requires ECC. Now...

    Building a home server

With the general trend of upgrading things on my computer these days, compounded by the fact my SSD perished right on christmas eve and now I'm twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the day stores are open again, I've been thinking about the things I want out of the home server I might eventually...

    High-bandwidth firewall

Well, apart from the standard fare, I'd like to have: Component control / Application protection Attack detection Interprocess Communication control And while this router looks pretty damn nice, I don't think I'll be able to find it here. @Kaido Tinywall looks like a pretty solid choice. I...

    High-bandwidth firewall

Recently I've come to the conclusion that I may require a new firewall. So I'm looking for recommendations. Free preferably, but...

    Multi-monitor G-sync setups

I've a couple of questions. I've been researching some upgrades for myself. The general consensus is that the Asus G-sync monitor is right on the horizon - june/july. Overshot by a quarter of the original estimate, but eh... So, with that in mind, I need to know how G-Sync and non-G-sync...

[TT]Battlefield 4 PC system requirements aren't harsh at all

Everybody needs to get up in a hurry and ditch DX9 and 32bit and FAST... Thankfully FB3 is doing the first part at least! The weirdest thing I saw is a new Plants vs Zombies will use FB3. Go figure. :D We will be bedazzled by the awesome detail of the humble garden-variety zombie(no pun intended).

    New build for my wife

It's Ivy Bridge(which is nice), the mobo is nice. The PSU is overkill. Not good for anything demanding as far as video goes(will play 1080p, but forget about games). A small SSD would still constitute a "quantum leap" in performance. Doubt it critical though.

    Digital TV through PC?

Hehe. Right, I was just trying to get the point across as to how exactly I was imagining things could go. Yet, believe it or not the box even has SCART. So I doubt anything coming out is encrypted in any way.

    Digital TV through PC?

Right. Vivacom mean anything to you then? I do NOT care how you get the data. I just want it as if it was a file playing from the computer on a media player of my choosing. End of story. Example: take cable from set top box, plug in video card, download software and be done.

    Digital TV through PC?

Er, this would require the content to already be available on the PC. Something which it is not. Right now it goes from the set top box directly to the monitor, entirely skipping the PC. As in, it's the wrong technology for this problem.

    Digital TV through PC?

Is there some way to patch my TV through the PC? I.e. instead of plugging the HDMI(or other) from the set top box directly to the monitor, have it go through the PC. So basically a software solution. I'm basically looking for post-processing and streaming support.

Ultimate Photoshop build: Hard drive strategy?

Agree. A 3 tier system with lots of RAM is best. If you want the ultimate for SSD get the new intel S3700s, otherwise one of the other regular choices would be just fine. And the RE4's are perfect here as well. Two separate SSD's are overkill(one's got enough performance for all your app...

    New router capping at 2MB/s

So what's the point of that number they designate the data rate with, if more than 70% of it is wasted? (You probably don't have to answer that.) Still, I was expecting real speeds at least in the vicinity of 100mbps.

    New router capping at 2MB/s

Well, duh... Still, you're probably right to point that out since I've given no background. Nifty program. Not much help, but still. Anyway, I played with the settings. Using AES instead of TKIP and changing some channels I got it to a relatively satisfactory 6-7MB/s. Still not 300Mbps. Wireless...

    New router capping at 2MB/s

b/g/n flavours all supported. As mentioned, on the old router I got up to ~5MB/s. If it was possible then, I see no reason that it should be lower on the new one. P.S. In the connection status speed is listed as 54Mbps.

    New router capping at 2MB/s

I just got myself a new router - TP-Link TL-WR1043ND. The old one was just some cheap model that the ISP gave me. It worked pretty consistently with something like 11MB/s wired and 5MB/s wireless. The new one, was supposed to be faster(being a gigabit/300Mbps one). The wired part works...
