Intel says flaw in Series 6 Sandy Bridge chipsets

Crappy news :| Since it only affects the 3Gb ports, I might be able to get by using just the 6Gb ports and the marvell ports if I have to. Would rather not go through the hassle of a recall now that I have a new system up and running.

Well it was supposed to be the 1204 BIOS that fixes double POST, so not sure what's going on there. Yeah on mine it only shows those two fans also.. :\

What Memory to get?

Memory speed makes a slight difference compared to CPU and GPU. Memory is relatively inexpensive now, I'd just get the 1600 at least. Check the Qualified Vendor list in your ASUS manual if you don't want to take any chances. I got this for mine, not on the QVL but don't have any issues...

P8P67 PRO issues?

The dual boot issue is fixed in the latest BIOS release. You can control the fans to some degree in the ASUS AI Suite software (Fan Xpert)

Do you have an older SATA HDD to use for testing? Are you able to install windows from DVD? They had the 1253 bios linked for a short time here: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2136820 but they took it off when they released 1204. Might as well wait for the next BIOS update since...

HD slower?

Drives vary a bit in speed, hard to say what will be faster unless you look at test results. Maybe a driver issue too. For a Mac I'd stick with Hitachi and get a 7200rpm drive.

If temp increased after BIOS update, I'd assume they just tweaked the reading of the sensors. 50 C shouldn't be enough for overheat, but my 2600k idles at 30 C with the same board and the 1253 BIOS, and the stock cooler, according to AI Suite II. You could try one memory module at a time, and...

Yes, my C300 works fine on the 6Gb port on the Pro, it's only when an HDD was formatted with an allocation unit size of 512 bytes is when I had problems booting.

Yes there was a crunching sound when I put the CPU in mine, which I thought was weird, but everything works fine. I doubt you need to return your board since it has booted. There must be some component causing problems with the BIOS/EFI, which seems to be common on these new boards.

ASUS: please test different allocation unit sizes on HDDs. I found out that my problem was because my system (P8P67 Pro) would not boot with allocation unit size of 512 bytes on an HDD, even if it was the only drive attached, boots fine with default allocation unit size.

I tried something today, with some strange results. Disconnected SSD. Plugged in blank HDD with no volumes. Installed Windows on HDD Boots fine, no problems. Connected SSD Boots fine to HDD, no problems. Change boot priority to SSD. Boots, HDD visible, no problems. Delete volumes on HDD...

Could this be due to a bad motherboard?

I'd reset bios to default/turn the overclocking off, remove all HDDs except your boot drive. See if it is stable then.

I always have problems with bleeding-edge components, I was expecting it when I bought sandy bridge components days after they became available, and sure enough I ran into problems. Same thing happened when I bought my last computer, which was right when Conroe came out. Things were mostly fixed...

Try turning off UAC and running setup as administrator, or boot into safe mode and run it. I had problems getting it to install too.

When did you attach each of your HDDs, prior to installing Windows or after? Which sata ports are your SSD and HDDs plugged into? I have an external enclosure like that too, and I also can't boot with that attached, not sure what that is. Anyway, I submitted a problem report to ASUS.

Here's mine, disk 0 is my system drive, and 1 is the HDD with no system on it: One thing I noticed before, when I booted with an empty HDD with no volume on it, the system SSD became Disk 1 and the HDD was Disk 0. Not sure if that means anything. When I plug in the HDD after Windows boots...

That did not work for me, but my issue is slightly different. For now, I just enabled hot plug in the SATA Configuration in the BIOS, and plugged in the HDD after windows booted. Unfortunately I have to do this every time I reboot, but at least I can get to my HDD if I have to.

This worked for me, but it is not a permanent workaround. Leave extra HDD(s) unplugged from the motherboard Enable hot plug in the BIOS: Advanced - SATA Configuration, for the SATA ports you're using for extra HDDs. Once booted into windows, plug in the HDD(s). Has to be done at every reboot...
