Thanks guys for the advice. Just thought I would let you know I went for the gigabyte p34g at $1400 ( my missus said I could spend more cause its christmas). I'll have it in 4 days and cant wait!

Missed your posts as was in Sydney for a week, no one had stock of the laptops I mentioned here (i mean other than the overpriced jbhifi etc) so ended up going for the u31sd for $780, i5 2nd gen, 500gb (can update to ssd when 250gb is cheaper), nvidia 520 gpu, added an extra 4gb ram for 8 total...

Memory goes from 16gb to 8gb

I don't see why oci'ing the CPU is resulting in memory not being read, does anyone know if memory settings automatically change with the new asus bios? I have my CPU at 4.5'but will try a drop to 4.2 and see what happens.

Hi wangstang, 850w gigabyte. I have tried reseating memory chips with no change. Can't believe I didn't think to reset all settings to stock, I will give that a go today! If that fails I guess I will just have to take it all out, thanks for the tip on seperating cooler and CPU. Thanks all

Hi all, I have 16gb memory in my pc, for some reason it keeps defaulting back to 8gb (system and bios say so, but cpuz says 16gb). I think it has something to do with overclocking my CPU because if i go to my bios and set the memory to a lower frequency or voltage higher it goes back to 16gb...

Thanks guys, disabled hibernation freed up an extra 10gb space, I hadn't touched the page file as a few things I read said it could affect the drive. Everything running smooth now, got a 8.75 for CPU in cinebench and am maintaining system stability wit a 4.6ghz overclock. I was worried it...

Fixed them both and now running smoothly, next thing to do is learn how to stable overclock. Windows install has taken 40gb of my ssd space, any idea what to delete to make more space. Cheers

Ah I see, I thought mudbox used vram, and sorry for the spelling error I meant Vue, I have a personal animation in mind which involves some pretty intricate and dense jungle, but my current system cannot handle anything near my imaginings (even for single frame renders for matte painting)...

Hey David, apps like mudbox easily get up to 15 mil with fine detail, and once you start adding large textures to a scene it can slow to a crawl. Nothing slows the artistic oomph like a hard to work with scene. So if VRAM will speed things up I wouldn't mind spending the extra cash. Not sure...

Thanks guys, bought most of the components (minus GPU) as per your suggestions. after hearing about chip failure I am going to upgrade my gigabyte ud3r to the asus pro which has 4 sata 3 ports, and I like a lot of the features on there ( i think I have about 7 days to return parts for exchange)...

Ok I must be reading something wrong then, The deluxe asus I have downgraded to the pro version, I wanted a board that would allow me to keep a stable overclock at say 4.5 - 4.8gh for rendering and what not. Also the Gtx 580 3gb has the extra ram to allow me to handle large scenes, and more...

I dont mind spending a couple hundred extra for a better motherboard with the upgradability, and I thought a 12 core would be good for rendering until bulldozer. what would you recommend for my price range and purpose? If I can get a powerful system (like gtx 980) and it'll last a few years...
