Here in lies the rub... You can't do an online update because it's broken. You have to search the support forums, find the fixed files and manually install them. My point is that for a newb, coming from Windows, their first experience, right out of the gate would be to hack and patch.

How do I get the OS X look on XP?

Flyakite Is the closest that I've seen but the Trash can is still buggy. If you're board of Windows then give Linux a try. You could buy a MAC and run both OS X as well as XP by either dual booting or using virtualization.

Thinking about switching to a Mac

I was a long time PC user and explored Linux for over a year. I ended up with a Powerbook and bought my Son a iBook. I still keep 1 XP machine around for the rest of the family to abuse but I have no interest in it for now.

I went trough many Linux distros and liked Gentoo the best because it taught me the most. I sold my PC and bought a mac Powerbook. It works really well. Mac OSX is based on BSD which is a very secure flavour of Unix. All the Linux commands are the same as Unix when you get behing the GUI...

Dual Boot

Boot from the XP CD and select the Recovery Console. Login to the installation and then type 'fixmbr'. On W2K I think it's very similar except you choose to restore boot files or Master Boot Record. You could also boot a Win98 floppy and type fdisk /mbr.

Which distro has the best documentation?

Reading = Learning. That is why good documentation is key in selecting a distro. I have used many different distros and have bought many Linux books. I have learned the most from Gentoo and all the docs are on-line. One excellent resource book though is 'Linux in a Nutshell.

Run OS X on x86

I thought OS X was just a desktop manager running on some flavor of a *nix kernel? That being said... for a x86 PC just use Linux with KDE or Gnome.

Can games run on linux?

UT2004 runs flawlessly. One thing that will make your experience better is to use a EMU10K1 sound card like a SBLive or above. Integrated sound cards have poor driver support using ALSA.

Moving my Debian installation to another drive...

I used the 'cp -ax' command and it worked. Here's what I did... 1. Installed the new harddrive as hdd. 2. Booted with the a Knoppix Live CD. 3. Made new partitions and formated them. 4. mkdir for /mnt/new and /mnt/old 5. Mount old and new root partitions to respective mount points...

If you really want to learn Linux then print out the Gentoo Linux/x86 Handbook and you will be in full control. BTW, I'm using the gentoo-dev-sources (kernel-2.6.3) on an nForce2 board and I compiled in support for sound and NIC w/o any problems. Gentoo... it's all about choice.

The bundled packages are where I got all messed-up with dependencies. Gentoo uses a local/remote database called Portage that handles all your dependencies.

Gentoo is easy to administer due to their on-line package database. It's caller Portage and takes care of all dependicies. Their Forums are also excelent for getting help. Olias

Wow, thanks for all the great feedback. :) I going to try to hold off until thanksgiving sales as sugested. My need comes from a forth PC I built and I'm going to bump my slowest PC out the door for $200. This is where I'll get some MORE ;) cash for a new card.

Thanks for clearing that up... I would definately like to get 8X AGP. Problem is that... I called a couple of shops and they told me that they can't get the Ti4200 anymore. I can get the ASUS V9560TD GeForce FX 5600 with 256MB of memory for another 38 bux. Is the 5600 much better and how well...

Anyone running an AthlonXP 2500+ on the retail HSF?

Thanks M4H... I assume you are talking about a 2500+ Barton not OC'd. BTW, how's the noise? I ran 3DMark 2001SE and it locked-up. I'm now running at 10x200 (2.0GHz) and at the default 1.65 volts. This lower speed passes 3DMark and even Prime95 torture test. My temps are between 35C and 50C.

Well I received my 2500+ Barton and it's very quiet. The fan runs at 3000 rpm and the cooler is made by AVC. I replaced the thermal pad with AS paste. I then OC'd the chip to 3200+ speeds and had to raise my core to 1.75 volts for stability. The temps range from 35C idel to 53C loaded. I was...
