Thanks all for your pipes. I still believe Linux has a future mainly because no one can own it. This, to me, is the appeal.

    Bad Linux Experience

Here in lies the rub... You can't do an online update because it's broken. You have to search the support forums, find the fixed files and manually install them. My point is that for a newb, coming from Windows, their first experience, right out of the gate would be to hack and patch.

How do I get the OS X look on XP?

Flyakite Is the closest that I've seen but the Trash can is still buggy. If you're board of Windows then give Linux a try. You could buy a MAC and run both OS X as well as XP by either dual booting or using virtualization.

    Bad Linux Experience

Just my little FYI: I used Gentoo for over a year and it was a great learning experience. I then got away from Linux after buying a Mac and everything just works. I recently tried Ubuntu 6.06 on my son's PC and was quite impressed. I then was reading good things about Suse 10.1 and was...

Thinking about switching to a Mac

I was a long time PC user and explored Linux for over a year. I ended up with a Powerbook and bought my Son a iBook. I still keep 1 XP machine around for the rest of the family to abuse but I have no interest in it for now.

    newbie wants to leave windows

I went trough many Linux distros and liked Gentoo the best because it taught me the most. I sold my PC and bought a mac Powerbook. It works really well. Mac OSX is based on BSD which is a very secure flavour of Unix. All the Linux commands are the same as Unix when you get behing the GUI...

    Dual Boot

Boot from the XP CD and select the Recovery Console. Login to the installation and then type 'fixmbr'. On W2K I think it's very similar except you choose to restore boot files or Master Boot Record. You could also boot a Win98 floppy and type fdisk /mbr.

Which distro has the best documentation?

Reading = Learning. That is why good documentation is key in selecting a distro. I have used many different distros and have bought many Linux books. I have learned the most from Gentoo and all the docs are on-line. One excellent resource book though is 'Linux in a Nutshell.

    Run OS X on x86

I thought OS X was just a desktop manager running on some flavor of a *nix kernel? That being said... for a x86 PC just use Linux with KDE or Gnome.

UnOfficial "Which Linux Distro for me?" thread

I have been using Gentoo for a while and I wanted to report that they released version 2004.1 in a 2 CD pack. The first 'install-x86-universal-2004.1' ISO when restored makes a bootable CD with all the binary packages required to get the basic system up and running. There is also a 139 page...

    Can games run on linux?

UT2004 runs flawlessly. One thing that will make your experience better is to use a EMU10K1 sound card like a SBLive or above. Integrated sound cards have poor driver support using ALSA.

    Thinking or switching to Mandrake...

No. It's all about reading. If you spent 15 minutes reading, you would see that there are pre-compiled binares just like most popular distros. <snipped> The Gentoo Reference Platform (GRP), is a snapshot of prebuilt packages users can install during the installation of Gentoo to speed up the...

    Thinking or switching to Mandrake...

If you really want to learn Linux then print out the Gentoo Linux/x86 Handbook and you will be in full control. BTW, I'm using the gentoo-dev-sources (kernel-2.6.3) on an nForce2 board and I compiled in support for sound and NIC w/o any problems. Gentoo... it's all about choice.

The bundled packages are where I got all messed-up with dependencies. Gentoo uses a local/remote database called Portage that handles all your dependencies.

Sorry but I couldn't resist. I started using Linux about 10 months ago and I'm really liking it. Here is my experience in a nut shell... - Started with Redhat which showed me what the possibilities were but was too pre-formated. - Tried Gentoo but it was way too wide open and over my head. -...

Is "Now" a Bad Time to Buy a Video Card?

I'm in the market for a new video card and did some research. It turns out that ATI will soon be releasing their 9600xt and nVidia only has the FX5600 to compete. I hate waiting but I don't want to end up with yesterday's technology at today's prices. Please advise, olias

Anyone running an AthlonXP 2500+ on the retail HSF?

Thanks M4H... I assume you are talking about a 2500+ Barton not OC'd. BTW, how's the noise? I ran 3DMark 2001SE and it locked-up. I'm now running at 10x200 (2.0GHz) and at the default 1.65 volts. This lower speed passes 3DMark and even Prime95 torture test. My temps are between 35C and 50C.

Well I received my 2500+ Barton and it's very quiet. The fan runs at 3000 rpm and the cooler is made by AVC. I replaced the thermal pad with AS paste. I then OC'd the chip to 3200+ speeds and had to raise my core to 1.75 volts for stability. The temps range from 35C idel to 53C loaded. I was...

    Soltek NV400 Advice Please

I wanted to try to put together a half decent system on the cheep. I read that Soltek's SL-NV400-L64 was a good, single channel nFORCE2 board. I wanted to pair it up with a 2500+ barton and OC it to 11x200 with an INFINEON 512MB PC3200 DIMM. I was looking for someone's experience with the above...
