  1. Selling a lens... will I regret it?

Would you be well served with a high MP DX camera? EDIT: thinking about 300mm equivalent and lots of MP.
  2. Got me a used D3100 and ready to start shooting again

The 50mm f/1.8G would be excellent. The 50mm f/1.8D will not auto-focus on your camera, and af is a nice thing. The 50mm If you don't have the 35mm f/1.8G it is a great "normal" prime. "D" lenses require a motor in the camera. "G" lenses have internal motors. Your camera does not have the...
  3. Help me select a lense!

(EX) condition used D7000 and 35mm f/1.8 from KEH for $550. Another $100 will get you the 50mm f/1.8D which is suitable for portraits on DX.
  4. Cleaning your lens glass.

I would HAVE to clean it. I also use UV filters and clean them with those Zeiss lens cleaner wipes from Wal-mart. I have also used them directly on lenses with no ill effect. Somebody will probably reply with horror stories....
  5. Sony dropping a 42mp bomb

    Mostly agree.....
  6. is it worth it to repair a P&S camera?

Keep your eyes open. There have been some real deals on Nikon 1 J-series including the dive housing. I bought my son the J1 deal with the dive housing for around $200. There was just a good deal on the J4 with dive housing for about the same money. Nikonrumos usually points these out.
  7. Canon 450D upgrade to Fujifilm X-E2

Owning a number of cameras, the vast majority of my shots are done with the Canon s110. Main reason, is Canon offers a really cool case that fits on my belt with super quick access. It is the camera I always have with me and I can be ready to shoot in a couple of seconds. Of course, I'm a...
  8. You can only keep one lens.

Truth. On the D7000 it is sharp and I like the wide-open vignetting at times. This and the 35mm f/1.8 is all I use for DX.
  9. canon s95 vs modern smart phone (s6)?

My S95 had the inevitable lens zoom failure. I purchased the S110 to replace it, and there is some improvement. But, it seems less of a "jewel" than the S95 and I find I like the button placement on the S95 better. I ordered a new lens assembly off Ebay for $35 and watched a video on how to...
  10. Nikon D7000 corrupts memory card when I delete all pics

Never tried "delete all" on the D7K. I always format the SD cards before I start shooting, and have ever since my Nikon 995 days. Never had any issues with any of my SD cards. FWIW.
  11. What is the best DX mid-zoom?

The zoom is for my DX D7000. I'll be shooting primes, primarily, on the new FX camera. JR
  12. What is the best DX mid-zoom?

I generally shoot primes on the D7000, all of which are FX except for the 35mm f/1.8. I bought a used Nikon 18-70 f/3.5-4.5 DX a while back and it is a pretty cool lens. It is overall very sharp and I have enjoyed the vignetting for some artistic outdoor shots wide open. It is very sharp at...
  13. What is the best DX mid-zoom?

What is the best DX mid-zoom for a D7000? I'm looking for sharpness, fast aperture, quick auto-focus, VR for low-light shooting and good build-quality to include a smooth/precise zoom ring. I want it to be a joy to use and to never be the limiting factor in my shots. JR
  14. Value of film equipment

    good deal on that one...
  15. Value of film equipment

I do still shoot some film. I don't mind paying $100 - $200 for a 35mm that's been CLA'd with all new light seals. I'm looking at a Yashica Electro 35 GSN for around $100 right now. Nothing super great about the camera, but it is a neat range finder with a really sharp lens. They're tons on...
  16. Recommend a lens (or two) for a camera noob using Nikon D5200

That 50 is a great lens. Consider it a short telephoto on your camera. Good for head-n-shoulder portraits inside. The 35mm dx lens is "normal" and a nice lens for the money. It is easily the most used lens I have fo rmy D7000. A nice kit for Nikon DX is the 18-55, 55-200 and 35mm f/1.8...
  17. What's a fast camera?

Do you require the camera to be pants-pocketable? If not, the Nikon 1 series would make you very happy.
  18. Recommended zoom lenses for action shots?

The 70-210 AF-D is much faster focusing than the 70-210 AF. Super deal for the price if you have plenty of light. The 80-200 AF-D F/2.8 can be had for around $900 refurbished and is a great lens. JR
  19. D700 owners, upgrading to D750?

I'm really hoping for a deal on a used D700...
  20. where to buy used camera gear?

KEH and Adorama. You might pay a bit more than Ebay, but you can trust what you will be getting. Businesses with many thousands of good feedback on Ebay are good to deal with, rather than individuals. Once again, you'll pay a bit more but can trust them more.
  21. What kind of photographer are you?

Most of my snaps are family, but I make my living as a corporate hack in PR shooting events and putting presentations, brochures and the like together...
  22. cheap lens filter for protection only

Tiffen un-coated 52mm UV. $6 shipped from Adorama. Test to see if you can tell a difference with the filter on and off the kit lens. I'll bet you can't. Fog the filter with your breath and clean with your t-shirt. You'll get more lens flare with an uncoated filter so think ahead when...
  23. Good lens for a Nikon D80 for mountain/high-desert pics

    The D7000 Refurb is a steal @ $609 http://www.adorama.com/INKD7000R.html?utm_term=Other&utm_medium=Search%20Site&utm_campaign=Other&utm_source=adl-google

  25. Olympus FL-14 flash backward compatability

Will the Olympus FL-14 flash work with classic Olympus Cameras like the Trip 35 and the PEN EES-2? Both of these cameras are in perfect working order and each have one contact on the flash shoe. Flashes from the proper era are either very expensive or iffy due to age. JR There are photos...
  26. Medium format film cameras

I see where you are coming from, but it sure would be a lot cheaper to "try out" a 35mm SLR. You can pick a Nikon FE (CLA'd, with new light seals and a warranty) for about $100. Add a 50mm f/1.8 E-series for about $30 and you're good to go with a really great camera (I actually used my 50mm...
  27. Now that I must start over from scratch (assessing my camera needs)...

Mirrorless APS-C. Good reviews all around, tracking AF being the biggest minus. Has the best EVF on the market right now, and some reviewers claim that the IQ set the bar for APS-C. Of interest to you might be the Fuji Velvia film emulation, which is claimed to be pretty darn good with this...
  28. Now that I must start over from scratch (assessing my camera needs)...

I agree. The advantage of DX is smaller/cheaper while still providing the benefits of a DSLR. FF negatives are size/weight/price. Pixel density does come into play, so very often a DX will give better performance than an FX cropped to DX size and uses the central sweet-spot of FF lenses and...
  29. Now that I must start over from scratch (assessing my camera needs)...

    Also, the D7000 is a steal right now (refurb). $619 http://www.adorama.com/INKD7000R.html Sigma f/2.8 mid-zoom $519 http://www.adorama.com/SG1750NKK.html Tokina wide-angle zoom f/2.8 $525 http://www.adorama.com/TN1116NK2.html Tokina 100mm Macro $399 http://www.adorama.com/TN100PNKAF.html...

  31. I have GAS

Here is Steve Huff's Nikon 1 Gallery. For $249 the V1 is a steal. The kit lens is pretty good, but if you get GAS from the V1 the best prime is $900 and the really nice wide-angle zoom lens is $500. Normal prime $200. This deal might cost you $$$...
  32. Lost my gear

Yes. With the D7000 I'm pretty well set. Every camera is a compromise, and I just plain don't like Sony so I never consider them. The V1 is near perfect for me, but not everyone shoots like I do. I haven't missed a "real" flash, because I shoot natural light with reflective modifiers. The...
  33. Lost my gear

If I was starting over..... My "one" camera couldn't be a full size DSLR, due to price and size. I couldn't afford the best lenses along with the camera I'd really want - plus it all would be too big to carry all the time. So, once I start to compromise on size I'd settle in at one of two...
  34. Lost my gear

You should start a "If I was starting over again I would get a...." thread.
  35. What camera & lens/es you started out with?

Wow... "First" camera was a brand-new 1972 Kodak Pocket Instamatic 110 I got for Christmas.
  36. Emulating Film - Kodak Tri-X 400

Yes, with Disappoint's crop I see what you're saying... The stage was a mess, with numerous groups performing. I did sorta' like seeing the audience, but I do think you're right.
  37. Looking for reliable aftermarket battery (D3200)`

Nikon battery is $70. Generic from Adorama is $35. Why risk it? But if you do simply buy from a reputable company and trust their buyers. Next firmware update you might lose the ability to use the 3rd party battery. JR
  38. need advice on what to buy

It all depends. My trusty Canon S95 does pretty good video. I've shot recitals and youth symphony concerts with it and a P&S gorillapod clamped to a handrail or stuck on a wall with the magnets in the legs and generally have been happy. For a family trip, I find I really end up hating toting...
  39. Emulating Film - Kodak Tri-X 400

Shot with the Nikon V1 , 32mm f/1.2 lens. Converted to B&W in Lightroom 4. 1/125 sec, f/1.4, ISO-560 under bad stage lighting in a darkened room. The girl was singing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry", so I thought it would be cool to emulate B&W Film for the shot. I’m trying to emulate...
