Intel 510 Series SSD now available.

It is pricey likely due to the use of scarce 34nm NAND. But this should also come down in the near future in anticipation of lower demand. Anyway, I do feel that it is pretty much in line with 240/250GB competitor prices out there assuming that they are still using 34nm NAND.

Intel's new SSD 510 series using Marvell controller ?

This is probably true since they have already pushed forward to include SATA3 on their mobo (all should thank AMD for this since they pushed SATA3 on their 8XX series chipset), they will need something that can make use of it.

    Vertex 3 when?

Vertex 2 is worst if not the same. At least they did not pull a fast one on Vertex users by silently switching fully populated channel drives with one that is half populated. I got an affected Vertex 2 80GB, but they refuse to own up on the performance lost citing that it is normal... Fastest...

    Are 3D TVs Worth It?

Personal opinion, I think 3D TV is not going to get any useful at the moment. Firstly, you need the glasses to be on if you want the 3D effects to be good at the moment. Secondly, 3D TVs are very pricey, and so are the player and mediums. It may take off eventually, but I won't want to be the...

    4200RPM vrs 5400RPM laptop HD

A bump in the RPM should make things a little more snappy, but do note that 5400rpm is actually still sluggish from my opinion.

Thunderbolt - Intel releases their 10Gb/sec pipe

Can it actually hit that speed currently since it was suppose to be optical fibre, but current ones are using copper wire. That is a huge difference in terms of transfer rate. :\

Sandy Bridge is the current craze, what is next?

Exactly what I wanted to say. Seems like a pretty exciting chip to look forward to. Hope AMD delivers this time.

That is right. AMD did release Thuban chip with 2 cores disabled, but this is not for retail sale unfortunately. :\

Yep, if you are getting one with better battery life, i3 is the way to go at the moment.

OCZ falsely advertising 25nm Vertex 2 drives?

I guess this is the dilemma when you have no close competition. So SF is delivering different FW to different manufacturers, but due to the demand for it, manufacturers will have to bite the bullet and release them since they are the fastest and NAND friendly controller makers.

One more reason to avoid SSDs, and stick with magnetic platters

For the goodness you get out of SSD, I don't think that is a deal breaker. Anyway, my SSD is generally used for my OS and applications. Don't usually store anything much on it that is very important.

OCZ falsely advertising 25nm Vertex 2 drives?

They don't just lie about the capacity, but putting all the rave reviews about how fast it is on the old drive is a complete misrepresentation. The new drives that uses less NAND and thus, less channels don't even come close the the claimed speed in the reviews.
  14. W

OCZ falsely advertising 25nm Vertex 2 drives?

This is exactly the problem. 25nm or not, it is the way they implemented it that made it have less space and speed. The heaviest hit is probably the write speed which see a proportionate decline due to the reduce in number of channels used. At this point they still refuse to own up addressing...

WD Scorpio Black vs Hitachi Travelstar 7k500

I trust Hitachi more than WD with the drives that I purchased from both companies over the years. It is true that the Scorpio Black drives are faster though. :)

Good budget or high value 128GB SSD for lappy?

Don't look at past SF controller SSD reviews pal. I think if you just look at those thread on OCZ SSD, you should try and steer clear of all SF SSD at the same time. OCZ took the plunge to be the first to transit to a smaller 25nm Nand, but at a huge expense of performance. I believe other...

    34 nm G2 now or 25 nm G3 later? 25 nm later a mistake?

I think the risk of getting another other brands, not just OCZ, is that the Nand changes will affect them big time since they do not have their own Nand fab. In this case, OCZ made a very poor move by switching to 25nm with the excuse of better price, but at the huge expense of performance. So...

OCZ falsely advertising 25nm Vertex 2 drives?

Just saw their statement. http://www.techpowerup.com/140553/OCZ-the-First-SSD-Manufacturer-to-Announce-Successful-Transition-to-2X-nm-NAND-Flash.html The transition was a "success" and they also succeeded losing their customers. :sneaky:

Good budget or high value 128GB SSD for lappy?

I will go with the Intel ones. Have 2 of them, one 80GB and one 160GB, and both trashes the new Vertex 2. I believe other manufacturers are not very far behind in moving on to 25nm with their SF controller drives since 34nm is going EOL.
  20. W

    34 nm G2 now or 25 nm G3 later? 25 nm later a mistake?

Point is if you need it now, then get it. As every SSD manufacturer will be moving on to 25nm, I believe they will find their way out. Honestly, I won't mind getting another new Intel SSD now since we know the benefits of 34nm over 25nm.

OCZ Vertex 2 with 25nm NAND flash reported slower

Based on the new drives performance in real world, it takes a 100 to 120GB drive to match the write speed of an Intel G2 80GB. :|

What to do with all this RAM when DDR4 rolls out?

If you think about it, there are still quite a number of users on DDR2 despite the fact that DDR3 have been around for quite sometime. In fact, stores still sell cheap desktops running on DDR2. I am sure the transition won't be so fast though.

OCZ Vertex 2 with 25nm NAND flash reported slower

I agree. They innovate, and most others follow. I like the way they do things, though they could have done better in this case. Anyway, my Vertex 2 is also crawling at the moment. Seq read at approx 172, write at 52... Even startup seem to take much longer than my Intel 160GB now... :\

OCZ Vertex 2 with 25nm NAND flash reported slower

This is an irony since shinking will likely lead to lower prices, but also lesser space. So is SSD going to be much cheaper at the end of the day? :hmm:

RAM: What's more important - Timings or speed?

I usually go with timing, and leave the frequency untouched. Both are equally important though, since for example increasing frequency, you will likely have to loosen the timings.

Does Anyone Actually Know of a Worn Out SSD Due To Too Many Writes?

Pardon me but for best practice, you should have turned off pagefile on your SSD. If it is going to pagefile so soon, then surely it should be time to increase the amount of ram since they are cheap now. :)

    Seagate Momentus XT

Zacate laptop upgrade or downgrade to celeron 743 system?

I think getting a Zacate laptop will be a decent upgrade, though I won't expect a huge jump in performance. Will laptops kill the desktop?

Demand for laptop sales is increasing at the expense of desktops, but to totally replace desktop is not really possible.
