You are going to have a hard time converting HDMI to VGA. It's digital to analog, so you'll need a box that does that conversion well. I believe just a cable (even though it looks like they make it) shouldn't work, maybe that's why the reviews all suck.
The scalar looks something like this...
SB is becoming a bit of a bandwagon, in any case there is merit to it, so if you can wait it's not a bad idea. Sometimes wait times increase from what is expected, so if you aren't in that much of a hurry I would say wait.
I would look for an i7 or i5 with Optimus, but overall CurseTheSky has it right. MBP does a good number of things right. If the price is worth it to you, they are still good laptops and you could go with another Mac.
I agree with the SB recommendations. It's really beginning to sound like the best thing since sliced bread, but overall it doesn't mean you can't purchase if you are in need. Overall I'm quite partial to Asus laptops, but there are others that are good too, personally I wouldn't trust Toshiba...

1900x1200 resolution is a dying breed, I think they just cost too much that not many of them were sold
Alienware has always been known to be a bit over priced for it's specs, similar to Apple...but if you like the look you got to pay. :)
Try looking at the Asus 1015PE Netbook Review
Or if you'd like to play with OPTIMUS, try the Asus 1015PN
The problem with media on the go will always be battery life vs power. So if you need to max your battery life, you'll have to go with the minimum power. But you didn't really mention...
I agree, why not get a good gaming laptop? What's more portable? You basically didn't give us anything on how portable or how quiet it really needs to be.
Either way you have a lot of options, full pc, shuttle, some nettops may work for you, laptop...etc
You can get it from Amazon Direct price looks like $600 from them, but you can get it for $550 if you look at one of the resellers on that page (unless they're charging $50 for shipping!).
