best bang for the buck wireless security camera?

The CCTV systems came down in price .... Costco had 720p 8 Camera with DVR for like $400 .... unless you really need wireless. By the way, don't get something that offers below D1 recording, 960H is better, but 720P is even better :P

You could check what motherboard you have and see if they support any xeon cpus (even if no xeons are listed, the pc should display a message about the processor not being supported, but it should boot.... however you have a dell so you've got 50% chances it will/not work) I had a C2D...

Stream video signal over LAN

What I need: Stream CCTV cameras (it has RCA, VGA and HDMI outpus) over network using DLNA so I can see it on smartTVs or receivers (etc.) that support DLNA. Since hdhomerun can stream tv channels using DLNA, I figured there should be a box that can take any video input and stream it, right...

Raspberry Pi can be an option (more or less) ... however running wires and relays is not really an option (maybe if you're building up your house from the ground?) ... Although it should be easy sticking a raspberry pi in your garage and control the door from your smartphone.

I have it too, great phone but the OS simply sucks .... I am at the stage where I am forcing myself to use it, but I'll get something else soon .... heck i'm about to fix my iphone 3gs so I won't have to deal with Windows apps. The phone is great though!

Very interesting & tempting... I see there are 2 versions of Xeons E5450 : 80W & 120W TDP The 80W one should overclock better (it produces less heat at stock speeds), unless I am missing something.

Is a C2D still powerful enough

A C2D is slow for today's standards, but when you overclock it to 3Ghz+ and you add a SSD, then it is a totally different story. IE, Firefox, Chrome open in less than a second, it plays HD video (flash too) without any slow downs, and you can have open bunch of tabs. I'll say to listen to...

Suggestions for an older Inspiron 1720

I have a similar laptop, and I went the ssd+Win7 router (it already had 4Gb ram). Since you have space for 2nd hdd, you can always turn it into a media center pc (HTPC) and use it to watch movies/music on TV (it can be a very nice experience if you have surround sound and a nice TV/projector)...

yes if you connect a pc to the tv ... 1080p would be ideal over 720p yeah smart TV should be under resolution ... usually it is really slow anyway (when you launch the apps.... video plays fine though)

keep in mind that if you go with G700, the USB charging cable they provide works fine, but it is not flexible enough (like G9x or G500) to play games .... in fact even when I browse the web with the cable attached I hate it....

The ethernet cables are so cheap, and you'll be able to use it at the new location as well (I am not sure if they still supply you with Ethernet cable when you get a new modem) I bet if you are to monitor your connection you get a bunch of retransmition requests

In the entry DSLR market it comes down to user preference (Nikon, Canon etc) As much as I love Costco deals, I would still try to get a Canon T3i as opose to T3 (the i represents some real nice upgrades) .

how do you use htpc

As said, HTPC must be a dedicated (some times optimized) PC. All the connections (video/audio) are permanent. In my opinion, a HTPC done right is a pc that blends in with the rest of Audio/Video equipment.

Can I use WHS2011 as an HTPC OS?

I tried WHS for my HTPC (not 2011 though) and like el-Capitan said, it lacks in multimedia features (can't install codecs, or limited support). As far as I know when you run Win7 in a virtual environment (virtualpc) you loose hardware acceleration (GPU)

Yes I did, and it gets much quiter by setting the AAM value lower, however the average access time goes up from 14.x to 18.x I am using SSD so it doesn't bother me.

I also have a 1TB Hitachi drive in my desktop for 2 years now; compared to WD, Seagate & Samsung, Hitachi is much louder (at least mine is). I am too looking for a good backup hdd, but none of the deals screams "buy me" imo.
