S3TC is implemented in the GeForce series to combat the swapping problem in several Quake3 levels at 32bit max texture detail.
The 64MB cards do not need to use it, since they have sufficient video memory.
I have 32MB DDR, so I use the S3TC and the artifacts are not noticable in actual...
My 17" Sony E200 is far easier to read at 1280x1024 than my 19" Viewsonic PS790(shadowmask).
I'm gonna replace the Viewsonic with a Sony E400.
