    My car (Mazda Protege 2003 LX 5spd) seems to get best gas mileage at 90 - 100km/h. At 100km/h it's already revving at 3000rpm so the gas mileage drops off quickly above this speed (62 mph).

    Right. I can get the 12y = b - 4 from reducing the matrix, as I end up with: [ 1 -3 2 ] [ 0 12 b-4] [ 0 0 0] But how does this tell me which values of b this system is consistent. That's what I forget.

    Depends on the car. If I want to do it on the Mazda I would either have to force it or double-clutch. Usually you shouldn't be putting it into first unless you're stopped :) I always put it into second at stop signs unless I go slower than 5km/h (actually do a full stop)
