Gaming set to 1080p on a 4K monitor

Thanks, everyone, for your input. Especially Elfear because you've done what I was asking about. Looks like it's probably something worth doing, for my use case, anyway.

Gaming set to 1080p on a 4K monitor

cbrunny, I was looking at the Samsung U28D590D, which is 28". I tend to be pretty sensitive to seeing pixels in text/static images, and we briefly had a Dell demo 4K unit (32") at work, and the clarity was stunning on the desktop. I know I won't notice the jaggies as much gaming, even at 1080...

Gaming set to 1080p on a 4K monitor

Rakehellion: Kinda yes and kinda no. So on the dual scalar 4K monitors, you could set the resolution to 1080 in Windows and run everything at that resolution no problem, but if you had Windows in 4K, and told a game to render in 1080, that would break things because the GPU was treating the...

Gaming set to 1080p on a 4K monitor

Hey all. I'm looking at getting one of those cheaper Samsung 4K monitors, mostly for the crisper text (at least where there's High DPI support) and ability to fit more on the screen while working on the desktop. But I also do some gaming on my desktop PC. While the GPU (a GTX 760) I have is fine...

Applied memory voltage higher than set voltage on Maximus VI Hero

Just for future reference, I had also posted this on the Asus RoG forums and got a reply from Raja there on the subject. Here's what he said: I don't love that the voltage the system displays isn't actually what's hitting the RAM, but I can live with that as long as it's staying in the range I...

Applied memory voltage higher than set voltage on Maximus VI Hero

Hello all. I have a system I'm in the process of testing having just built with a Maximus VI Hero board, i7 4770K, and G.Skill Trident X DDR3-2400. The issue I'm having is I'm a bit concerned that the voltage being applied to the memory when using the XMP profile is a bit higher than the...

Which MB for a system using Intel i3 2120?

I was looking at this for a colleague recently. I ended up picking out an MSI Z68 board which was only $85 after rebate (it's since gone up to $95). Here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130612

Any SSD Diag/checking software out there?

I've gotten hold of one of Dell's new tablets, the Latitude ST, and I'm futzing with it for the sales guy that it actually belongs to. Especially with the time a virus scan is taking on it, I was wondering if maybe there's a problem with the SSD in there: installs take forever, the scan is...

EVGA Precision v2.1.1 now with voltage tuner.

(Blinks) (Downloads) Awesome, thank you. So... what's a safe voltage for me to juice my 560 Ti to? I've never paid attention to voltages because Precision doesn't let me modify them...

    Who else loves needless overkill?

I'd be interested if it works fanless. I'd guess you'd probably want to mount the radiator on a top fan mount for the convection, but if you have a positive pressure case, why not?

Just set up an i3 2100 rig

Yeah, that's been my experience, too. Just a great, great processor for the price. Has anyone done any comparisons between the 2100 and 2105? I'd be interested in that face off.

    What paste should I use?

If you've removed your heatsink, you should remove the old paste and reapply before reseating. It doesn't need to cover the whole surface of the processor, just where the cores are under the CPU cap (Arctic Silver's instructions have a good image of this, page 5 here - pdf link). For most folks...

Bulldozer for Servers: Testing AMD's "Interlagos" Opteron 6200 Series

I've seen some conflicting stuff on that. While it seems like R2 SP1 does take advantage of some BD features, from what I've read it looks like it still doesn't schedule correctly, and if that's the case I wonder what else is missing? My expectation is that they still need to do some work to get...

how much free space am I supposed to leave on SSD?

This. When I first got an SSD I went through the whole ritual of trying to reduce writes, but as far as I can tell, they're not actually being killed by writes. Folks have been trying. Newer SSDs are robust enough that you can just throw your system on there and forget about it.

help me decide which is better...3 choices for RAM today

G.Skill DDR3-1600 8GB (2x4GB) $45 Sandy gets better performance with either DDR3-1333 CAS-8 or DDR3-1600, any faster and you don't really see any benefit, but I'd get the cheapest 8gb, 1.5V kit you can of DDR3-1600. Personally I've seen a lot of bad RAM but no bad sticks from G.Skill which is...

how do I get my 2500k to go back to 1.6 at idle after overclocking?

That's odd. When I use turbo, it just turbos up to the multiplier I've set, using the voltages I've set. That you'd get different voltages with turbo enabled compared to without seems strange. Are you switching from a fixed voltage to a dynamic one when you enable those options, or...

    USB 3.0 motherboard adapter

I had to do something similar, deconstructing the rear bracket that came with my P8P67 Pro mobo so it took up less space and plugging a USB3 card reader into it. Biggest hassle was finding somewhere to tuck the ridiculous volume of cabling I was left with to go 6 inches.

Sandy E in stock at newegg

Household vs. individual. Also, FWIW, in the last couple of years the individual number's dropped some $4k, although I'd need to do some significant digging to find the source for that. My point was that you're really getting into the relatively wealthy bracket to be looking at this processor...

Sandy E in stock at newegg

Rich is relative. Median income for someone with a job in the US these days is $28k, that's peanuts. Not many people earning that will spend $600 on a CPU. Hell, I do pretty well for myself, and it would be more than I could afford by the time I had the 4 DIMMs, board, and cooler. Speaking of...

SB Owners, what is your next CPU upgrade?

Ivy. I'm intending to pop my SB processor into a test server when Ivy comes out and reuse everything else on my board. Seems the most cost effective solution for me right now. Or that's what I'm telling myself to justify the new proc. :)

Help me pick a CHEAP mb to use as a storage server.....

Shop around. You can find them for $20 if you look. No reason to use an IDE DVD drive in this day and age, and then you're left with the HDD. Honestly I'd probably just junk that, too.

Scythe Mugen 2 Fan Keeps Stopping (Motherboard making beeping noises)

This. I'd grab one of your case fans, plug it into the CPU fan header, and start up your system to see if it has any issues spinning up. If not, get a new fan, if the case fan also has issues, it's a mobo problem. Fastest way to check.

Using newer Intel supplied drivers on Asus board. Wise?

I've been having some issues with my board, which was just returned from Asus after I RMA'd it, with no work done (they said they couldn't find any problems). I think what's up is bad sensor reporting, so as well as them supplying me with a newer version of their sensor software, I wanted to try...

Best way to Spread Thermal Compound

I've found that when I try to spread the TIM, the only way I can get even coverage without unevenness that would probably cause air pockets is to use more TIM than is wise. Maybe I'm just inept, but for that reason I go with the grain of rice in the center method, and it works better for me than...

    HardOCP: FX8150 vs. 2500K with 2-way/3-way SLI

This had been my thought, too. I would love to see the same bench run on Windows 8 just to see how it comes out. IMO, the biggest mistake AMD made may well have been not going to Microsoft on bended knee with some cash to write a patch to fix the scheduling in Windows 7. We don't know how big a...

Could intel manufacture and sell a 3 core processor?

Well, they already have a processor at that price point. I'd guess they don't want to cannibalize that market when they'd basically have to make a quad and turn a core off. No business reason to do it. And if for some reason someone really wants a triple core processor with a lower TDP, they can...

    Suggestions on new CPU cooling

I'd probably take the Noctua. The Kuhler's quiet 'til you crank it up, but it gets noisy when it's running full tilt, and if you're OCing, you'll be doing that. What I don't know is whether it'll get quieter if you maybe replaced the fans? I'd be interested if anyone else here's gotten lower...

Bare minimum Sandy Bridge processor for basic Server 2008 r2 build

Hi all. I'm looking at building a bare-bones, cheap as you can make it server for home mostly for testing/learning purposes. Currently the plan is to run Server 2008 r2 on there, use it as a Domain Controller, and have some clients again mostly for testing purposes running in Hyper-V on there...

Down Sides to consumer hardware for Windows Server?

So it seems that for various reasons I need to put together a Server 2008 r2 system as a Domain controller and Hyper-V server for home. It looks like the cheapest way for me to do this would be to throw together a system using an H67 chipset and for the time being an i3 (that I'd replace with my...

    EVGA 560Ti VS MSI 560Ti

Well, right now "none" because it's just been mailed off for service (bad VRM, which took forever to figure out), but an Asus P8P67 Pro, i7 2600K when I actually have them. It screams. Just ridiculous, probably overkill for what I needed, but it's nice to have and play around with. I do love the...

    EVGA 560Ti VS MSI 560Ti

Well, more is usually better. I've found my 560Ti to be more than adequate for what I do, which is mostly Civilization V. I got the FPB version which is clocked to 850Mhz (822Mhz is reference), and when I'm gaming I usually OC to 920Mhz which is the most the card seems stable at without boosting...

    EVGA 560Ti VS MSI 560Ti

Varies. Sometimes you get a different design because the manufacturer is trying to save money, sometimes you get a different design because it offers better or quieter cooling, sometimes you get a different design because it looks cooler. The twin fan HS designs have better cooling...

    EVGA 560Ti VS MSI 560Ti

When Nvidia produces a chip, they make a "reference" design to demo the chip and provide to reviewers/manufacturers to show what works. The manufacturers then either riff off the reference design (which is mostly what EVGA has done, single fan, big heatsink, near exactly what Nvidia's original...

AMD Now "Verging On Irrelevancy" Analyst Says

Honestly, at this point I've given up trying to tie stock price to anything other than fairly uninformed tech reporting. I don't think most of these analysts have the slightest clue what's competitive and what isn't, what makes money and what doesn't, they just run with the latest headline. The...

Jaguar to be upgraded with Bulldozer

Honestly, for a while I've been figuring the only real use for Bulldozer was going to be HPC and virtualization. And I'm still interested in how it does as a VM solution. But for the desktop? Probably only in very, very specific applications will it be worth considering.

    bit-tech.net reveals Ivy Bridge details

Honestly, were I buying now, I'd get a nice mobo with PCI-E 3.0, pop in an i3 for the time being, and then build a second computer using the i3 once IB came out for kitchen/garage/wherever. But YMMV on whether that would work for you.

    BIOS: Update or don't update?

The Asus boards also have a recovery option for if the flash goes bad, you copy the BIOS to a USB key, and there's a way to make a board with a bad BIOS automagically pull a replacement off the key. I'd need to look up exactly how you do this, but I know the option's there.

Anyone use closed loop watercooling on their CPU? ie Corsair H50

Also worth noting that the better closed loop coolers do do a comparible job to the best air coolers, and you can fit them in a smaller case. I couldn't fit a big Noctua in my case if I wanted to, but I can fit an H2O 920 in there no problem.

(why) should I wait for Ivy Bridge?

I'm planning on building a VM farm in the near future, and I'm waiting to see what Valencia brings to the table before I spring for the system. I'm far from convinced Bulldozer will be worthwhile for consumers, but I'm hopeful for it as a server platform.
