windows xp and @home

my brother just got a new HP computer preloaded with WinXP. is there anything he needs to do to configure his @home cable connection in order to use it? he has a 3Com USB Cable Modem. any help would be great. oh yeah, he lives in the chicago area.

odd windows XP/office problem

this happened when i tried installing Office 2000/XP onto my newly configured XP computer... whenever i try installing Office (any variant) directly from the CD, it stops midway through and says it cannot read one of the CAB files. if i make an .ISO of it, burn a new copy, i still get the same...

windows 2000 boot disk for clean install

do you have a cd burner? if you do just take that disk and make it bootable- follow the guides here and it shouldn't be a problem

Win2k ACPI and Overclocking

i'm on a duron 700@850 and have no problems with windows2000 and ACPI. i run at 1.75V, but the cooling that ACPI mode gives me in widows2000 is great - 28C at idle and 42C full load. once i get my new vantec HSF, i'm expecting the full load temps to drop into the mid 30's too :).

What is the best CPU cooling software

i think that cpuidle is the best idling program out there - bar none. at least this is the case for windows98 w/o AMD chips. durons/thunderbirds act finky with cpuidle. that's one of the reasons i switched over to windows2000 :)

Does mixed RAM decrease your system performance???

<< Mixed meaning different sizes of one speed rating? or mixing dimms of different speeds? Mixing different sizes shoulnt be a problem. Mixing say, PC100 and PC133 will result in all the ram running at PC100 speeds. >> not true necessarily. i have pc100 and pc133 ram in my system and i have...

Prime95 - "Sumout"

could mean your voltage is too low - try increasing it at .025 incriments and see if it aleviates the problem. don't go too high though, you could fry your chip :/ safest bet would be underclock your chip a bit.

Duron 700 Default Voltage is 1.70

if it's locked, it might be the motherboard that sets the voltage at 1.7 standard - not the chip. if possible, try to invest in a new motherboard (asus a7v or abit kt7 spring to mind) that allow full customizing of multiplier/bus speed/voltage in BIOS.

whats your DURONS 800 voltage @?

my 700 duron wont let me go higher than 900 reliably :( @ 8.5x100, the voltage requirements are a decent 1.725 for 9.0x100, i have to increase the voltage to 1.8 to get Prime95 to run without errors the board i have (abit kt7) doesn't like any FSB settings above 110 - that requires me to up...

seems kinda fishy - my new duron 700 chip only needed 1.6 volts in order for it to run stable. did you buy the chip as a part of a complete system? if you didn't, plop it into your motherboard and set the cpu speed in the bios to auto-detect. if it comes up at a lower rated speed - then yes...

Am I safe??? (And does this Duron kick @$$ or what?)

i had the same question as well - will going to 1.85V on my duron @ 900 fry it eventually? it runs idle at 29C and 46C under a full load. at 850mhz, (8.5x100) the chip only needs to be set in the bios at 1.725 for everything to be running smoothly. for some reason i can't see the 50 extra mhz...

128 Kbps what is it in bytes/sec

an upload uncapper? huh? judging by his upload speed (128), i'd imagine that he'd have some flavor of dsl. if that's the case, the upload speed is capped by his provider at the central office through cool little switches and the like. there is no way he can 'uncap' his line unless he upgrades...

Is Netscape 6 worth the upgrade?

on windows 2000 with SP1 installed... IE is rock solid and has never crashed on me. meanwhile, both mozilla and netscape 6 (ugh) have knocked themselves out with bugs and instability issues.

is ConservativeSwapFileUsage=1 working?

i've been told that running 'ConservativeSwapFile=1' and setting a min/max swap file is redundant. unless you're running 20 apps at one time, you don't need to set any min/max at all - especially with the amount of RAM that you have.

Best MTU setting for 512/128Kb DSL line?

leave the mtu at the default (1500 at most cases), the RWIN should be set at 32k for max throughput. go here dslreports and click on tools on your left hand side. from there test your line speed and tweak tester, look at the recommendations the tweak page gives you.

disable Netbios Win 2k server gives errors

i'm not sure what the problem is :o on win2k professional i connect using DSL (ethernet attached modem and RASPPPOE to dial up) and am able to disable NetBIOS w/o any messages popping up.

How secure is Win2k Pro if your not running a firewall

better yet, test it out for yourself - www.grc.com. go into the site and click on 'shields up!' to begin testing. somethings to mention besides what owensdj said. if you're not connected to any LAN (basically home use with a dialup/dsl modem to connect to the internet, i'm not sure about this...

How do I remove Windows ME without reformating?

go here, get the boot discs for win2000(the first link that says NT 4/5, start up on that and install. better yet, download and create a win98 boot floppy, start up on that, delete the windows folder that's on the C: drive, restart with the win2000 boot floppies and install from the cd. cheers.

go here www.bootdisk.com. make sure you download the software in the utilities section which lets you write the disc images to your floppies :) enjoy - BTW, you need 4 floppies to create win2000 boot discs

Any recommendation for speaker???

If you can find them, get the Sony SRS-002PC Speaker system. I don't even know if Sony still makes them actually. They're the only piece of equipment to last me through 3 different computers (my Apple 17 inch monitor has lasted me through 2). They're two sharp speakers powered by a nice...

Headphones recommendation?

Denon AH-D210 headphones are about 60-70 bucks if you can find them. they have a great minimalistic look and sound pretty damn special. there's a good balance between treble and bass. they're worth your money, trust me. :D

soundcard, headphones and distortion

i have a guillemot maxisound fortissimo soundcard. the card has some kickass 2d sound, decent 3d sound, GREAT optical output and 4 speaker capabilites. when i connect my Sony PC speakers to the card (with subwoofer) i can crank up the volume on the computer and the sub as i please w/o hitting...

Which sound card do you use & how do you feel about its audio quality?

Guillemot Maxisound Fortissimo soundcard and Sony SRS PC Speakers w/ subwoofer. Great sound quality - and with optical output, my mp3's never sounded so good on my minidisc :D

What kind of system would you need to play HALO?

isn't the movie different than running the actual game? running a movie at fullscreen is totally different than running the game itself - much less cpu intensive.
