Regarding the Asus memory frequency support: Asus' own "Edgeup" blog states that all four boards support RAM frequencies up to 3200. The specifications for the PRIME X370-PRO, however list 2666 as the maximum. Makes me wonder which source is the correct one now.

I might be having low FPS expectations, but I haven't encountered a game which my 290x wouldn't run "perfectly" at max settings on a resolution of 1440p, including Star Wars: Battlefront, Battlefield 4, The Witcher 3 etc. I assume a 390(x?) would fair even better.

I think the HIS card performed the best in closed case scenarios tested by Tom's Hardware a while ago, which is why I bought one and have been quite satisfied.
You should really consider buying R9 290 or 290x cards for 4k - they significantly outperform their Nvidia counterparts at such high resolutions due to the wider memory bus and generally larger VRAM. Nvidia cards seem intentionally crippled for those cases.
I'm pretty sure nothing can beat a Qnix in price. They're not perfect (only DVI-D and some light bleed possible), but for that price - a steal!

I actually bought a HIS R9 290X iPower IceQ X² Turbo and I'm very satisfied with it. It ranked above both XFX and Sapphire in closed case testing done by Tom's Hardware German team. Since I have a very well cooled case, I intentionally went for a more open heatsink design.

As seen here, the DiCU II actually seems to be the worst custom cooler when tested inside a closed case (almost all review benchmarks are made in open-air setups). Sapphire, MSI (lightning) and HIS seem to offer the better options.
I think what lavaheadache meant was that it's based on the 290x with 4GB, so it could reasonably increase VRAM only in steps of 4, I suppose. Just like the GTX cards from Nvidia do it in steps of 3.

Though I'm sure the 780Ti is a good card, I can't imagine why anyone besides a coin miner would care about watt/performance. Surely you have the few disposable cents for electricity if you buy a 600 video card - you wouldn't care about the fuel mileage when buying a Maybach.

Again, noise and heat are not an issue with aftermarket 290/x's. I do agree on the price, which is why I'm waiting for the supply/demand to level out and the prices to drop to expected levels.
I don't think anyone's trying to convince you to buy a reference R9 290/x anymore. The custom cooled cards are mostly quieter than a 780Ti and very well cooled.
With modded Skyrim using 3GB at 1080p today, I can't immagine 4GB being enough in about two years. To get the most out of a card's lifetime, I'd buy a 290x now and another one for CFX about 2 years later when they'll be cheap, to get another one or two years out of them. Hence the need for a...
I'd probably get a 27'' one, even for 1080p. Though if you are willing to spend a little more, there are some great Korean imports on Ebay with 27'' and higher resolutions. I think there's a pinned thread about those here on AnandTech.
