The Ultimate CPU Fan for heatsinks

How come no one mentioned the noctua NF-P12? I see lots of great reviews about them being quiet and rated for pressure. I've never personally used one.

NAS vs. External Enclosure (both alongside HTPC/WHS)

I agree, finding an all encompassing digital video player is not without some frustration. I'm still looking for my solution, and willing to wait and work at it because I don't want a HTPC. However, if you do want a HTPC, probably the most powerful and versatile, it will be the most expensive...

NAS vs. External Enclosure (both alongside HTPC/WHS)

I got a little confused somewhere in there! ;) I might be missing something but not sure how you would have one computer be a HTPC and a NAS (The NAS should be the file server for the HTPC). The HTPC is going to be a windows machine most likely and the NAS something like FreeNAS. I would use...

NAS vs. External Enclosure (both alongside HTPC/WHS)

mfenn built you a nice system there for a very reasonable price! You asked about RAID - for a home system you could utilize a mirrored RAID for redundancy to prevent data loss. With FreeNAS you can use UFS or ZFS file system and you can chose the legacy FreeNAS 7 or the new FreeNAS 8. FreeNAS...

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

Are you using UFS? I'm planning on going ZFS which I've read is memory hungry. I'll test it soon when my parts arrive and it gets finished.

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I spoke too soon, buried in all the wires there is a 8 pin. I installed the 500W and everything boots fine on the main system (can't do much until I get my SSD and install win 7). I'll get the PS on order so I can get my NAS going. Thanks again for all your help.

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I broke down and bought two Samsung HD204UI drives. I did a lot of reading and people are having good luck with them. Reviews have shown them to perform really well. FreeNAS 8 RELEASE doesn't support the 4k sectors, but 8.0.1 BETA1 and on will (currently they are at BETA4). Now for my...

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I could return the brand new one but the other one I've had for a little while. If I could do it over I would get two samsung f4s. There is lots of good feedback about people using them in RAID configurations. I'll configure a mirror with FreeNAS and hope they don't time out. If so I'll put...

NAS vs. External Enclosure (both alongside HTPC/WHS)

I've been looking into building my own NAS using an old rig and FreeNAS. If you just wanted to buy something and not do the work these looked good to me: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822108065 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822155020 btw - I vote for the NAS...

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I'll have to read up some more on file systems. Another thing I've been reading a lot - Green drives (which I have two 2TB) don't do well in a RAID configuration. Do the newer drives or hardware/software RAID address this?

Got my new build up and running, exept a few problems.

The page file is virtual memory, there is tons of information about it on the web. Hopefully mfenn can better describe how to move it and what size to make it. Hibernation is a windows 'sleep' mode. It has a xGB file that can be removed if hibernation mode is disabled. You can find...

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I read through the blog for setting up FreeNAS for TM backups. It seems pretty straight forward. However, one thing is unclear - Does the destination drive have to be formatted as AFS for this to work? If that is the case, then the drive would not be usable for Windows. I'll probably try...

What's the Usual Procedure After Building a Desktop?

I would make sure you are booting from the DVD drive before HDD so you can install windows, enable AHCI, and leave most other settings alone. I think most people adjust the ram timing for better performance, but adjusting it improperly will keep the computer from booting.

What's the Usual Procedure After Building a Desktop?

The OP asked about things to do after build, is it really that important to enable AHCI from the start? If so, something he might want to do (I assume it is going to be enabled on a new build).

What's the Usual Procedure After Building a Desktop?

What about updating the BIOS or SSD firmware? I read here the initial BIOS settings are important and if I read right it even says to run in RAID instead of AHCI which seems like it would only work if using one hard drive. I've read that updating SSD firmware can cause the drive to be erased...

Storage, NAS, System configuration specific setup

I'm starting over with my home computer network and building a new win 7 computer. I want to have a NAS in RAID 1 configuration for storage, streaming, and backing up of my media. I'm planning it all out now, buying only what is needed. My hope is to reuse what I can and have it right the...

Need help building a $5000 rig

He could get a really nice monitor, a top end computer, something to stream video to from the computer, a huge NAS and a sound system. I'm trying to be cheap as possible and put together a home network that allows sharing and backing up of all files (from MAC and Win), time machine backups...

Engineering Workstation + Entertainment Build for College Student!

I totally agree with you and I'm with ya, not offended at all. With 1000 he should be able to get a nice system. I built my last system (no monitor) in 2007 for around 600 dollars. I'm still using it waiting on my new parts and OS to arrive. I think it is possible to build a system and have...

Engineering Workstation + Entertainment Build for College Student!

I just guessed on the media storage and play back and it was meant as a starting point. At least if the OP writes back he can get guided in the right direction now with some options listed. My feelings will not be hurt if I'm totally off. He could save 100 on the HD easy, 45 on the BD and...

Engineering Workstation + Entertainment Build for College Student!

I just got some recommendations from the forum. I'm no expert, but will try to give back. I wanted the same type of setup but had a few of the components already, and not worried about graphics. Here is what I would get: Case/PS - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...t-_-11-129-065 MB -...

    New Build recommendations

Thanks for the link and reaffirmation, the 2500k seems to definitely outperform the 2100, sometimes almost by twice. I had a hard time letting the cash go, but I don't like to wait so it will pay for its self.

    New Build recommendations

I was hesitant to spend the extra money, but I think it will be worth it in the long run with the time it saves encoding video (plus less frustrating). Thanks for the RAM recommendation, I bought it through newegg with free shipping and a free 4Gb flash drive. I checked the date when I...

    New Build recommendations

Not sure if the extra 90 bucks is worth it, but I plan on using this computer for several years (probably at least 4) so went with it! I think it will provide all the ports I need for the future. Plus, have the ability to upgrade by overclocking and adding more ram and a video card if I...

    New Build recommendations

It would cost me $100 to buy a case, ps, and hard drive to build another computer out of my old parts, plus the time building it. Is it more beneficial to just sell the parts barebones vs building them back into a system and selling it with winxp installed? I've never sold an old computer or...

    Intel i5 2500K Build - Please Review

I noticed newegg has this combo - http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.676009 It would get you an entry level z68 board and i5K for 320. I'm trying to decide what to buy as well, so I'm not recommending it (other folks on this forum will have better suggestions) just seems like a...

Thanks Dave! I checked the H67 boards and they start at $75 and the first full ATX is $85. So I went down to the H61 they start at $62 and the cheapest full ATX is $75. The biostar Z68 is $90 (checked again, it is $100 now), would it be worth the extra money to have the possibility (which...
