    Ron Paul's Straight Talk

How exactly is changing the way we vote for our President anything like "mob rule" or "direct democracy"?!?! The glaring fact remains: we're still voting for a President!

    The Electoral College must go!

Whoops, I thought you made the "roughshod over the little guys" comment. I think the framers of the Constitution can be wrong. They were wrong about counting black slaves as 3/5 of a person. They were wrong about making the Vice President the guy who lost to the President.

    The Electoral College must go!

And how does that differ from the swing state system we have now? What we have now is the candidates running to a select few states (no more than 10) and molding their campaign to the liking of those swing states, and they do essentially buy the presidency. The conservative voice in California...

    The Electoral College must go!

Why don't you answer my question about your comment? Is it realistic to think as someone living in Mayretta that there's some scary liberals up north who'll impose all these horrible things upon you and your loved ones?

    The Electoral College must go!

How does changing to a popular vote to elect a President "run roughshod over the little guy"? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. We're not proposing a popular vote to force you to have steamy man-on-man sex, or forcing your wife to have an abortion. We're proposing it to elect the...

Can we have a fiscally conservative and socially liberal candidate?

Well progressive/liberal social views means more spending in government. It means universal healthcare. It means better public education. It means actively trying to bridge the gap between the wealthy and poor. If by fiscal responsibility you mean balancing budgets, then thats one thing. If by...

    Assault Weapons Ban thread

All the major news orgs are saying that AK-47's and Uzis will be now legal, and under the AWB they were not. Is this true or not? Also, did the framers of the Constitution have weapons like AK-47's and Uzis in mind when they wrote the Bill of Rights?

anyone have a Sandisk Cruzer USB flash drive?

UPDATE: Alright I've done a little trouble shooting, and it was the cheap GE USB hub that I was connecting it to that was giving me problems. Plugging it directly to my PC works fine from what I can tell. Sorry for the wrongheaded comment.

anyone have a Sandisk Cruzer USB flash drive?

I wholeheartedly disagree with all the positive reviews here. This flash drive does NOT work very well. I just gone one today, and I've been testing it tranferring files from my WinXP box to my Powerbook. It works a few times, then all of a sudden the OS's can't read it anymore. When it does...

The newbie friendly distros are good because they help with the installation process. What turns many people off is that if the installation is too hard, they won't go through with ever really USING Linux. Just because its considered a "newbie" distro doesn't mean its any less of a Linux. Its...

coolred, Sorry to say this, but if you're having problems with Knoppix, you'll run into alot of problems with all those distros as well (Arch/Gentoo/Slack). You're going to need to learn how to debug and solve problems, that's part of the learning experience. I suggest two routes for you: 1)...

Are you sure you have your facts correct? He's not "appointing" anyone nor postponing any election. The President of the Senate will take his place, just like what happened when Whitman resigned to leave for the EPA. Also, while I know you have some sort of personal vandetta against the man...

Planned Parenthood T-Shirt: I Had An Abortion

Why has there been NO discussion whatsoever as to WHY Planned Parenthood put out these shirts? WHY women would choose to wear them. What the message THE WOMEN intend to send. Why aren't those points being raised? Instead, it seems in this thread that we have a religious conservative sausagefest.

    Vote for any 3rd party.

But I don't think that just voting for the 3rd party is necessarily the "loudest" way. I think truly working for change within the existing party is a better way. Actually I think the Democratic Party should split into two, one party Moderates (that would attract Rockefeller Republicans and...

Republican Corruption in Louisiana - Last minute Party switch means no Democrat to run for position

If a person CHOOSES to be a Democrat and receives the support of the Democratic Party, that person will obviously vote for Democratic leaders in Congress. Its just so plain and simple. In your odd terms, a person who runs as a Democrat believes in the Democratic Party, and thus votes for a...

Republican Corruption in Louisiana - Last minute Party switch means no Democrat to run for position

The answer is so obvious and you're being an annoying little wise ass by not acknowledging it. Because he would have been elected as a Democrat with the help of the Democratic Party! Its called "loyalty". Look it up some time. I know of no case where a member of Congress hasn't voted for his...

Republican Corruption in Louisiana - Last minute Party switch means no Democrat to run for position

Actually, the issue with this is not how he votes on individual bills, but who he votes for to be Speaker/House Majority Leader/House Majority Whip. The party with the majority effectively controls the Congress, and the power he has to keep the Republicans in the majority is much bigger than...

    Vote for any 3rd party.

It certainly would be nice if Third Parties got more respect, and if our electoral system wasn't winner take all. But the huge road block is that right now the 3rd parties have no leverage whatsoever. We can talk about what should be til the cows come home, but when it comes to implementing...

Yeah I caught this at 1 am last night, its called the "Tim Russert Show". O'Reilly does make good points, but he's so bombastic about it that he destroys his own case. For example, he called Krugman a "professional smear artist" and then went on to attack Krugman personally. He called him a...
