Not sure why everyone thinks an 845 is going to be cheaper than x86. I see an Acer atom/Celeron 11.6" Chromebook for $129. What does the average 835/845 smartphone cost? How is Qualcomm going to be cheaper?

Recommend an "incremental" backup software

I like crashplan--I back up to my NAS. You can also backup (encrypted) to a friend/relatives computer offsite for free. And if you want you can pay them to back up to their cloud, they even have an option to manage the encryption keys locally.

Today's Dell webpage (searching for XPS Tower). Cheapest system with SSD (256GB + 1TB HDD) is $1099 Cheapest system with Optane (16GB + 1TB HDD) is $749 Some config differences but my Dad doesn't game.

Optane memory

Skipping the SSD + HDD and going with 16GB optane + HDD absolutely saved my Dad money on a Dell XPS system. I used the system, it felt like a fast SSD. If it was for me Id probably get a 1TB SSD (OS/applications) + HDD (photos/media).

Good laptop for college?

+1 on the ASUS ux305 recommendation. 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. As long as you aren't into non-casual gaming, it's great. I got one for my inlaws, and it was snappy.

Is Intel's "Process Lead" Somewhat a Sham?

How would a process lead (density, power, yield, etc) not be beneficial (i.e. matter)? Of course many other factors are at play when it comes to winning sockets. Perhaps you meant the ranking of factors? I could see process technology ranking lower on the scale in highly integrated phone SoCs...

Why is it so hard to find a good laptop?

Yes, it has Thunderbolt. You can put your GbE at the end of your daisy chain. Or use USB GbE. Or buy a Wifi card. It obviously wasn't made for you--they sell GbE versions. Every product is not intended to be all things to all people. Sorry all, I'm feeding the trolls here--I'm done.

It's a barebones SFF system and you are posting in a barebones forum??? I don't understand the issue. :confused: Personally, I would buy a GbE version and not purchase/use wifi. Bundled wifi would be wasting money for me.

Can you link? I've never seen Intel go over TDP. What does an equivalent Kabini measurement look like using the same methodology? It is completely valid to prefer 25W over 10W CPUs in desktops, but I don't believe for a second these two CPUs are anywhere near each other in power consumption...
