    Which Timeline to get?

From a value perspective the HD version of the notebook costs $50 more than the SSD version, yet the SSD alone is over $100 more than a 500GB HD. From that standpoint the SSD version has an added value of $150 so is it a no brainer to buy the SSD version?

Cheapest Way to get a RAID-5 file server?

If all you want is 100GB, RAID 5 seams to be overkill. You would need minimum 3 drives so you could buy 3 x 80GB drives for about $40 each or get 2 x 160GB drives for $50 each and do a RAID 1. The RAID 1 solution is cheaper and gives better performance.

SDHC and LianLi CR-35 reader problems

Is there any electrical differences between the different class SDHC cards? My Lian-Li card reader can read my new Class 4 16GB Micro SD card without problems, but does not even see my Transcend 16GB Class 6 card. The Transcend works fine in my camera and on the included USB reader. I'm a...

What is the best system youve ever had....

I remember I had a Compaq 12MHz 80286 with a 40MB HD when most AT's were still running 6 or 8MHz and the majority was still buying XTs with dual floppys. Those were the days.

To all the Nvidia F@H GPU crunchers

If you are not running the latest Nvidia drivers, you need to upgrade. I have a 8800GTS 512 and I was running 177.41 and getting approximately 3000 PPD. I recently upgraded to the latest WHQL V177.83 and now I am getting 5760 PPD.

Does AMD have an answer to Core i7?

As for mainstream processors being in the $500+ region, it is conservative, I recall the days of the 386 and 486, frankly I remember paying $700 for a 750MHz Pentium 3 and well as $1000+ for an Atari 800. I'm exaggerating now, because the public simply won't except a high price for a mainstream...

My Spysweeper subscription is about to expire. Before I renew, is it still the best available? Are there good free alternatives available such as Avast for antivirus and Comodo for firewall in the antispyware arena?

Does AMD have an answer to Core i7?

I don't have any particular loyalty to any company but if Intel moves too far ahead of AMD, I'm afraid that there won't be any affordable Corei7 as there won't be any competitive pressure. I haven't even read of any rumors from AMD. I don't want to go back to the days of mainstream processors...

Minimal Card to Run Crysis on Very High

Since you already have an Intel based motherboard in the Asus P5E, I'd be more partial to the AMD 4800 series cards. Get a 4870 now and if you think you need more performance later, get a second one later and CF them.

What will home computers do 10 years from now...

Considering we had Windows 98 10 years ago and now we have Vista, I'd expect any changes will be evolutionary and not revolutionary over the next 10 years. To the non-gamer, advances in GPU and multi-core CPU is not really significant. Any mainstream computer today can surf and word process...

    Tape Backup

I see no reason to use tape on a personal level but companies still rely heavily on tape. Where I work, we make daily backups of all of our company data and the tapes are stored off site. It is used for business continuity and archival purposes.

    Confused but fearless

    1. Not too familiar with the built in RAID performance, but I would avoid RAID 0 in a production environment due to greater threat of data loss, unless you backup religiously. 2. P35 will give you the best bang for the buck at the moment, I hear the Gigabyte boards are good bang for the buck...

    Overclocking the Penryn

When the first Penryns are out, I think they'll be difficult to overclock because of the 1333FSB and the low multiplier. I really hope Intel releases a 1066FSB Penryn to make life easier.

    Ultra160 SCSI - 80 pin hard drives

Its not worth it, depending on how old the drives are, todays high performance SATA drives are faster than SCSI drives, especially in desktop applications. You would need to get 2 U160 controllers and then get 2 adapters for the drives as they are 80 pins. Most desktop SCSI controllers have 68...

    AT's Phenom review up (11/19)

It's simple, currently Intel offers more for my dollar than AMD does at the price range I'm looking at. No brainer. And if I am looking at something higher end, then there is no choice. What AMD needs to do is price their processors accordingly as they did with their GPU, on Newegg, the 3870 can...

    I need Laptop suggestions

If you are looking for gaming power for the next several years, then I would recommend you look for a laptop with an 8700M GT instead. This Toshiba laptop looks promising. WD My DVR Expander

I don't think it will work any better than any other standard esata drive, I bought a generic one from Newegg a while ago and it worked fine, but I checked on AVS forum to see that it worked before I bought it. One other caveat to expanding the SA8300, if your cable company is Time Warner the...

    Future changes -> 2, 6, 12 months out?

Only motherboards with Nvidia chipsets have SLI. I believe (you'll have to check this) that all AMD and Intel chipsets should be Crossfire compatible because AMD and Intel have cross licensing agreements. I just don't understand why Nvidia doesn't license SLI to Intel or AMD.

    OEM Athlon X2 6000+ $167.07 shipped

Its a shame AMD abandoned S939. I would have loved to give my money to AMD for an upgrade the CPU and give my PC a little longer life, but I will have to wait for a full upgrade in which I am leaning heavily towards Intel.
