  1. Best all-around gaming laptop for $2800+?

I don't know how you configured the Sager NP8150 to cost 2,679USD. Currently, a setup with an i7-2760M, 95% Gamut Matte Screen, 8GB DDR3, HD 6990M and a 750GB HDD would run you about 1,800USD. I ordered an NP8150 myself. Sager is one of the best for bang-for-buck in mobile gaming.
  2. Gaming laptop recommendations...

Since your price range isn't exactly within "gaming laptop" pricing, Sager, AlienWare, and etc. are out of the question. However, there are still some great laptops with awesome performance at your price range. The HPDV6 is pretty good. i7-2630QM, HD 6770M. At full spec, it costs a bit...
  3. laptop for school

I can't open the link that your friend's professor is suggesting, but that Acer Aspire seems very solid spec-wise. Although he might want a quad since he'll be rendering more (the 2410M is a dual-core.) I'd give the HP DV6 and DV6z a shot. Quad lappies with decent prices.
  4. Is this a good value?

This isn't such a bad choice. Would you consider a 14" notebook? The HP DV4 is pretty snazzy. Granted, it is 14"... But it is considerably faster, and isn't too big. For 12.1" with DVD drives, you'd be hard pressed to find any, I think. :T
  5. Which laptop to choose?

I'd personally go for the ASUS since I use a lot of processor-heavy programs. The GT 540M isn't a slouch for gaming either. The Lenovo one does have a faster GPU however. If you won't be doing much video editing or high-res photo editing, it's also a great choice. If you do go with the...
  6. Image Tearing and Vsync

It would be preferable to just switch on vsync from the in-game settings, but forcing it on wont affect performance outside gaming at all.
  7. Need advice to choose PC monitor

23" LEDs are going for pretty low nowadays. I've got a Samsung P2370 myself. Not LED, but it works quite well. They've got an LED version out now though.
  8. Need help upgrading my PC

+ to this, but just to give you an idea on the price with the GPU, here's an HD6870: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125357 189.99USD, so it should be right around ~500USD.
  9. What would you choose to hold you out?

An HD6870 wouldn't be a bad choice at all at this point. You're going to jump up to the HD7xxx series soon anyways, might as well just get the HD6870. You can't go wrong with it.
