  1. Windows 10 is the "official" name now!

Anybody want to confirm whether or not the Music App will install on the preview?
  2. Opera is malware not a browser!

Sorry for the late response. Unfortunately, I was unable to change my default search engine to something other than the five specified without the assistance of an extension. I don't quite know how my default for WolframAlpha carried over from the previous version, but once i switched it to one...
  3. Opera is malware not a browser!

I've changed my default search engine since the latest update. I've got it set to use Wolfram Alpha without any sort of keyword prefacing it. You can add a search engine by right clicking into any search field and selecting the 'Make Search Option' or similar option. From there, i believe the...
  4. Basic Software Interface Question

If you're doing Windows programming, you can use .dll files to hold classes and structures that you would like to use elsewhere. I keep a .dll around that holds various sorting mechanisms and data structures just because i'll use them in different .NET languages.
  5. Give me an example of "elegant" code in Python versus code in PHP?

Just to throw out my 2 cents. I think programmers usually interpret a language as 'elegant' when the language you're using seems to have been built for the problem you're trying to solve. As noted in beginner99's post, Python can look a lot cleaner and compact when it comes to some elements of...
  6. Opera is malware not a browser!

I don't suppose there's a way they can bring back tab stacking in this chrome-based version?
  7. Opera is malware not a browser!

FYI: The first search engine in your list is your default. Check the settings page to verify. Once your default is set, you don't have to preface your search with the desired shortcut. 's', 'w', or what have you.
  8. PSU Buzzing Noise On New Unit

I've read multiple reviews for the Case/PSU combo and the general consensus was the small, high-rpm fan makes more noise than the fan in larger form factors. Tried Blastman's suggestion on a recent start up and the noise came back shortly after i let the fan spin up. I did some research on...
  9. PSU Buzzing Noise On New Unit

Morning Anadtech, I purchased this Mini-ITX Case with PSU for a new build a couple days ago. After being on for a full day, i came back to the machine and it's emitting a low-pitch buzzing noise that seems to be originating from the PSU. I've listen to a few examples of coil whine and this is...
  10. AMD destroys Nvidia at Bitcoin mining, can the gap ever be bridged?

I've not dug into it at all, but on the surface it sounds too good to be true. How do bitcoins have any actual financial leverage?
  11. NZXT Phantom 820

I'm guessing that's a push/pull setup going on with the air cooler. I didn't expect the NH-D14 to work better, but if that's the case, i probably won't use the H100 like i had originally planned.
  12. Which Tablet OS for my Purposes?

The Vivo tab sounds like it would fit well as long as the aspect ratio won't bother you. I know that there are a couple apps for reading sheet music out there, but since it's full windows, you could at least use what you're used to. No idea if there are any plans for LTE on that model, so if...
  13. NZXT Phantom 820

I've got the same UPS unit. I did not realize that case was quite that large. How wide is it?
  14. Advice for database related interview

Know anything about the specific DBMS they are using? If you do, It would be helpful to look up types of backups and when/how often you should do them. The last DBA interview i had asked some of questions about what types of backups to use on databases of varying volatility.
  15. Windows Blue Confirmed, to hit RTM in june with august release

And it might end up that you never do any one thing particularly well. At the rate they're going, Microsoft might not get more then a begrudging indifference during the life of Windows 8/blue/etc. Hopefully, they find a better way to accommodate the full range of users. One that preferably...
  16. Windows Blue Confirmed, to hit RTM in june with august release

That can be fixed up by playing with file associations. For some reason, there isn't a default desktop PDF reader for windows, but if you download Adobe Reader, or something similar, it should ask you if you want to use that from now on. Some Metro applications know to use the metro counterpart...
  17. How does WHS 2011 client back up work?

It will do that if it thnks the other available drive isn't large enough to hold the client's backups. (if my memory of WHS 11 serves me right.) THis is especially true when the client backup folder shares the same partition with the boot drive. I think the Client Backups folders were more of...
  18. Holy Cow - Windows 8. OMG

Are you just using the bottom right or top right corner of the screen? there's a bottom left option that makes it a little easier to just click and go. (As opposed to finding the right corner, then scrolling down to the middle. ) I can say it's nice to do some server administration from a...
  19. How does WHS 2011 client back up work?

Are you sure you didn't set up "Server Backup" for the first 2TB HDD? That one usually disappears from any list and is managed by the OS without user intervention. Server backup is reserved just for Server images. Client backups are defaulted to the client folders, but can be changed. The...
  20. Leaked Windows Blue build 9364 Screen shots.

Over at Neowin. Different Live tile sizes, more start screen customization, same width app-snapping.
  21. What other software do I need for PC repair?

Having a copy of Malwarebytes around can't hurt.
  22. Best way to stream my own content via web.

What edition of server 2012? This might help. Edit: I don't know why the forum doesn't like the full URL, but there is some information in there about streaming to iPads specificaly.
  23. AMD chipsets, New AMD build since 2005

It's kind of difficult to say if one Mobo will be better than the other for a Phenom II, since they really aren't designed with those particular CPUs in mind. Since you aren't planning on Crossfire, 990FX won't have that much over a 970 chipset. If you don't need the extra PCI-E slot, you...
  24. Why only 4-way CF/Quad SLI?

Curious as to the value of all those parts as well.
  25. Does windows 8 have a compatibilty mode to run progams

Find a shortcut to the .exe, or navigate to the .exe, right-click on it, select 'Properties', and under the 'Compatibility' tab, select which version of windows you want it to be compatible with. Try it like that for a bit and see if that works for you. Seems to do the trick for some of...
  26. wowowow Surface Pro review

I would be worried about the SSD storage running low first. The nice part is, if you run low on RAM, swap memory would still be responsive when using VMware on it.
  27. Using 'this' Identifier In Java

I understand what 'this' is meant to accomplish, but I'm sort of confused as far as the conventions for using it. normally, if I'm referring to anything in a class, i precede it with 'this'. for example: public class linkedList { private class listNode { private...
  28. Windows 8 Sucks

I think the biggest issue with that video comes right out at the beginning. He declares the OS as completely unusable. This implies that anyone running Windows 8 is unable to "get their work done." That's just not the case.
  29. What kind of tablet should I get?

I'm hoping more games and hopefully an emulator start to make it onto windows RT soon. just found out the drivers for 360 controllers are still in there and a couple games are compatible. I'm just suggesting that visible pixels aren't so bad. ;)
  30. Guys, could you please help choose UPS from a list?

The rating on the UPS relate to the amount of the highest voltage-spike that it's expected to survive, not necessarily how much power draw you're going to have. As lons as your building doesn't suffer from a lot of electrical problems, you can probably use a lower-rated UPS. The dorms i'm in...
  31. What kind of tablet should I get?

I don't see how 1366x768 is poor considering the Surface's physical screen size. for 13 - 15 inch laptops it's unpleasant, but on the surface it seems like a perfectly fair trade off compared to the battery and performance deficits you would have seen if it was 1080p or the like.
  32. What kind of tablet should I get?

Just got my surface today and I'd definitely recommend it for your needs. It has support for peripheral devices via USB and mini-Displayport, which is working with one of my Mini-DP to HDMI dongles to drive another monitor. Storage capacity comes from the 32 or 64GB internal, but it also...
  33. Professional Commmenting Conventions

The company i will be working for will be too large to go hunt down someone responsible for a nasty bug, so feel like in-line comments will have their place. Where, if it exists, is the line drawn for over commenting? Is it something that should be worried about in a large environment?
  34. C/C++/C# Compilation on Windows RT

That would be a shame. I like .NET Any idea where some ARM-friendly compilers might be? I'm assuming versions of gcc and g++ are compatible with ARM, i'm hoping that means there's already something out there that will work on RT after some effort.
  35. Professional Commmenting Conventions

What sort of documentation? Printed user guides and ERDs?
  36. If you had $6,000 laying around...

Yeah, but what if something goes wrong? i bet an RMA would be a pain in the ass.
  37. Professional Commmenting Conventions

So, i'm beginning work as a professional programmer in the summer. I've taken a look at a lot of the code i've been writing and i can't decide if the way i'm commenting things is appropriate for professional code. What sort of comments do programmers and managers of programmers usually like to...
  38. No Haswell till June

Coming from a Phenom II, i'm tempted to pull the trigger on Ivy Bridge now. There's no telling if the architecture will have some bugs that pushes it's usability back to a little bit later.
  39. C/C++/C# Compilation on Windows RT

Has anyone heard if this is going to be possible? I've got a remote server solution set up, but certainly wouldn't mind the ability to compile and debug locally.
  40. Are you skipping Windows 8?

As long as i can still get Windows 7 when i put a new build together, i'll stick with it. I've got a Surface RT coming in however. I'm guessing that still counts.
