Motherboard Death?

Have you tried the onboard video? I'm thinking that the CPU took a dump-When you try booting without the CPU you just get fans running and lights on-no beep codes. Did you system have any signs of instability before this occurred?

Any other decent mATX board besides the Asus Maximus IV GENE-Z?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128523 GIGABYTE GA-Z68M-D2H $94.99. The major caveat is that it has much less USB ports and no eSATA ports. It does have 2 PCI-E x1 ports and 2 PCI-E x16 ports, whereas the Asus only has 1 PCI-E x4 port and 2 PCI-E x16 ports.

What was the first version of Windows you ever used?

Born in 1998-the first computer I touched was a CompaQ Evo n400c(Pentium III 850) running Win98 in 2002 which is still rock solid up to this day-it has outlasted a BenQ Joybook S73G with a Celeron M 420 and a HP Probook 4510s with a C2D T6570. I have it right in front of me right now running...

My casual gaming setup is probably the lousiest of all: Yes it is a GDDR5 version of a Gainward GT 430. Palit and Gainward make them. Gainward seems to have discontinued them though-can't find any details on their website any more. I can play GTA IV on 1680x1050 at an average of 20-30...

ASUS M4A77 - memory compatibility

My reasoning would be that if the board supports RAM with tighter timings, it would probably support RAM with looser timings from the same manufacturer. A quick google search turns up that the A-DATA Vitesta Extreme Edition - Memory - 2 GB ( 2 x 1 GB ) - DIMM 240-pin - DDR2 - 800 MHz / PC2-6400...

What happened?

If it was from the PSU, by all means, replace the PSU. Loud pops could mean blown/leaking capacitors-make sure you check if any caps are blown from the bottom. I had an MSI AMD 760G chipset motherboard with a lousy Chinese 350 W PSU-I plugged it in, it started all by itself, and a steady stream...

Replacing a iBuypower laptop motherboard

Laptops are all unique-that's why they come in different shapes and sizes, plus the ports are placed differently in different laptops. If you want to replace the motherboard the easiest way would be to go back to the manufacturer...

Asus P8Z68-V or Gigabyte GA-Z68XP-UD3P

They are pretty much the same-the Asus does have a few more ports though. If you want to go Gigabyte you might want to get the UD4P, which has firewire and eSATA, whereas the UD3 has a HDMI port which will be useless if you are going to use a graphics card. The Asus has Bluetooth 2.1+EDR.
