  1. Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

You do realize what Zen stands for don't you? Zen implies balance. Going with a huge core would be the antithesis to what the whole philosophy is about. Besides large core means lower MT performance. Because of the diminishing returns and the ability to pack as many cores in a given area. For...
  2. Discussion Should MLID be considered a legitimate source

I'm hit or miss on MLID. Some of his stuff I like and other stuff not so much. He does occasionally have pretty good business takes, but other times he can be wildly off. It's entertainment. I don't think he has bad intentions.
  3. Question Why does the overall gaming GPU market treat AMD like they have AIDS?

I buy both GPU manufacturers. Been buying GPUs since about 2000. So over 20 years. I've always felt better about buying AMD because, every time I buy an Nvidia GPU I feel like I was scammed. Like when I bought the gtx780 which fell off in performance over night. Since I also use Linux on all...
  4. Question Speculation: RDNA2 + CDNA Architectures thread

Except this time none of what we know about the upcoming consoles would make sense if there weren't some significant improvement in the RDNA arch. So I am personally excited and hope AMD can displace Nvidia at the top like AMD did with Intel. This would be great for consumers as Nvidia and...
  5. News Intel GPUs - Battlemage IGP benchmarks are here

I got just the opposite impression from the presentation. I mean it remains to be seen but if RDNA is truly a graphics optimized ISA and an arch without unnecessary compute features GCN has which don't get leveraged in most games. AMD could very well appease the gamers with it. While back I saw...
  6. AMD Ryzen 3000 - not so disruptive?

1800x came out just little over 2 years ago at the same price point as 3900x. 3900x offers twice the performance.(nearly 20% IPC boost as well). Also this product will most likely take the overall performance crown and become the fastest mainstream CPU. Nvidia would be charging you $1200 for...
  7. Massive security hole in CPU's incoming?Official Meltdown/Spectre Discussion Thread

Old Athlon x2s were being bricked, but Microsoft stopped pushing that patch.. they will fix it I am sure.. it is a mess though you're right.
  8. Massive security hole in CPU's incoming?Official Meltdown/Spectre Discussion Thread

Security issues will happen, it's always going to be a cat & mouse game, I don't blame Intel for having a security issue (unless they knew about it and were complicit, but I give them a benefit of the doubt). But there is no doubt they were caught sleeping. Years of tiny improvements and...
  9. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Depending on price, this thing might be sweet: https://imgur.com/a/1kxxO
  10. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

2200 will be significantly slower than 1030 especially with that RAM. 2400g could come close to 1030 if you OC it and the RAM to 3600Mhz. But it doesn't matter, it's still a better CPU and iGPU than the g4560 for the money.
  11. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

It's more expensive and it can't be put into a compact ITX case without a space for GPU. Something like this for instance: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811321024&ignorebbr=1 It's upgrade path is also worse if you put it in a bigger case.
  12. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

The $99 2200g has the SMT disabled, so it's just 4 bare cores without additional threads. The $169 part has 8 threads. You would want the faster ram with the 2400g because the iGPU could really use it. With the $99 2200g you can just use the cheap RAM I don't think it would make much of a...
  13. Intel Chips With “Vega Inside” Coming Soon?

They are not killing it though.. and neither AMD nor Nvidia have anything similar.
  14. Intel Chips With “Vega Inside” Coming Soon?

You underestimate the hold Intel has on OEMs with its rebates and other programs. This lets AMD sell its GPUs where it couldn't otherwise sell them. And at the same time given Intel's influence over OEMs it locks Nvidia out of these premium laptops going forward. It's a win win for AMD. They...
  15. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

RAM prices are seriously out of whack.. I am going to build a Mini ITX PC for a relative using the 2200g and 2x4Gb RAM as soon as it becomes available. And see how it actually does. It's replacing an old Mac Mini running on a C2D.. so it will be a big upgrade.
  16. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Yup, I was the only one pretty much who said HBM2 based APU was a good idea. Case in point: http://www.portvapes.co.uk/?id=Latest-exam-1Z0-876-Dumps&exid=threads/if-the-zen-apu-with-hbm2-comes-out.2494388/#post-38625384 And pretty much everyone argued against me saying it was a dumb idea...
  17. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

But you're paying $120 more for a crippled system. Instead, you can buy a $99 APU.. overclock it.. it will run Esports titles fine at tweaked settings. If you're not happy with the performance you can always buy a dGPU and now you have a faster CPU and a faster GPU than the alternative. And you...
  18. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Well I just showed you that dual cores are problematic with newer games. A trend that will no doubt continue. Especially now that the i5 baseline is 6 cores. And that you can get a 6 core 12 thread CPU from AMD for less than $200. If that game is struggling to break 30fps with a Titan XP at 720p...
  19. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Even from a pure gaming perspective, I would not be getting a dual core in 2018. You would be getting a dead end platform and sacrificing a lot just so you can max your GPU while still paying more. I think these little APUs make a perfect entry. The person building the computer can easily...
  20. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

You're still spending more money for an inferior solution (would not be buying a dual core in 2018). Vega iGPUs offer decent CPU performance since they are unlocked.. and the GPU performance is perfectly fine for some on the budget 1080p gaming. Pair it up with a cheap FreeSync monitor (I scored...
  21. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Right, I mentioned that as well. Actually we have Firestrike scores. Doesn't look that far behind the rx550.. when OCed 3600Mhz RAM and GPU cores: rx550 score 4292 https://www.3dmark.com/fs/12707392
  22. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

Wonder if these will be unlocked like the rest of the Ryzen lineup.. feel like these APUs will become the new budget favorites for folks building entry level gaming machines. Especially considering the state of the GPU market.
  23. AMD Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G APUs performance unveiled

rx550 has 8 polaris CUs. 2400g has 11 Vega CUs.. granted it may not clock as high because it's an iGPU (but 550 isn't clocked that high, and Vega has natively higher clocks so perhaps not).. this APU has technically more shader performance. Now the issue will be memory bandwidth. So you'd want...
  24. "I just confirmed that Raja Koduri will in fact be going to work at Intel." - Ryan Shrout. Twitter

Altera is absolutely worth $15B.. but they also bought McAfee for $7.6B.. *facepalm*
  25. "I just confirmed that Raja Koduri will in fact be going to work at Intel." - Ryan Shrout. Twitter

I have mixed feelings on this one. This could be a loss for AMD but it could be a chance at a fresh start as well (AMD is starting to make money so it's not like they can't attract new talent), RTG sure needs a shake up. Discrete GPU division was never a revenue driver for AMD. Nvidia has most...
  26. "I just confirmed that Raja Koduri will in fact be going to work at Intel." - Ryan Shrout. Twitter

Remember, Intel has no qualms with breaking the law. They broke it initially and then paid the settlement. Now they have all the fundamental GPU patent licenses, what's a few more patents to them? Nothing literally.
  27. "I just confirmed that Raja Koduri will in fact be going to work at Intel." - Ryan Shrout. Twitter

Vega's launch was horrendous. It was delayed, overhyped (poor Volta), Raja's didn't even deliver the final presentation Lisa had to step up and do it, the drivers still don't have all the features enabled. Don't get me wrong, I have a Vega GPU.. it's actually not bad at all, but the PR was...
  28. "I just confirmed that Raja Koduri will in fact be going to work at Intel." - Ryan Shrout. Twitter

Very interesting development indeed. If I were Nvidia I'd be worried.
  29. Confirmed by AMD & Intel - Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle NVidia

If anyone was going to buy AMD as a company that window was Q1 2016 when the stock was at the all time low and bankrupcy was still on the table. Too late now, AMD are cooking with gas now. For the first time in history they have strong CPUs and GPUs at the same time, and the pipeline is looking...
  30. Confirmed by AMD & Intel - Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle NVidia

G-sync was dead as soon as a free alternative came out. Another proprietary lock in standard for the trash heap of history.
  31. Confirmed by AMD & Intel - Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle NVidia

AMD's interposer shouldn't be expensive either. AMD has talked about it being built on a much cheaper process. Likely passive 65nm. It doesn't need 9 layers either.. it is likely pretty cheap to manufacture compared to real chips. AMD has in the past themselves said that the biggest factor...
  32. Confirmed by AMD & Intel - Rivals Intel and AMD Team Up on PC Chips to Battle NVidia

I think some folks on here owe me an apology. The ones who thought an HBM based APU was a ridiculous idea.
  33. Graphic card corrosive damage please help!

I suggested he measure the resistor, did I not? You disagree with me and then suggest the same exact thing. That resistor is definitely not part of a VRM I can guarantee you that. My intention was to help the OP, and not be flamed by someone who thinks they know better.
  34. Graphic card corrosive damage please help!

Hence why I chose a high resistance value. Also the resistor is nowhere near a VRM so I doubt it's part of a power rail so I doubt it would cause damage. In either case I suggested the same thing, to try to find the original resistor and measure it. The OP has already stated that he's turned...
  35. [ComputerBase] Pascal is ahead of Vega in Wolfenstien's 2 worst case scenarios

Just played the game on my Vega 64 (Liquid), on my 34" curved IPS 3440x1440p FreeSync monitor.. This is nirvana. Such a smooth experience and graphics look amazing.
  36. Graphic card corrosive damage please help!

The component starting with C is a capacitor, and the component starting with R is a resistor. You can try a 0.1uF (100nF) capacitor and a 1K or a 10K resistor (common values) 4.7K could be a happy medium perhaps if not sure. Those look like 0402 sized SMD components. Ideally you should look...
  37. AMD Raven Ridge 'Zen APU' Thread

Keep in mind Overwatch tends to underperform on AMD GPUs:
  38. AMD Raven Ridge 'Zen APU' Thread

HBM keeps finding more and more uses, and as the adoption grows it's inevitable it will start trickling down to the mainstream. Apple's recent decision to build iMac's using Vega HBM GPUs is another notch towards HBM's wider adoption. Personally I can't wait. An HBM APU would be killer.
  39. Vega/Navi Rumors (Updated)

Not sure how it's less efficient. Vega RX 64 is a 295 watt TDP card. Fury X was 275 watt. So Vega RX 64 uses 7% more power (if we go by TDP) but offers 20-35% more performance depending on resolution. This means Vega RX is more efficient not less.
  40. Intel Tells 7700k Owners to Stop Overclocking to Avoid High Temps

Intel's lid situation is the number one reason I haven't bought any more Intel CPUs since my 4770k, which over time just became worse and worse in terms of temps. In the end I couldn't even overclock it anymore and I had to run it undervolted. Intel is ignoring a very real problem with their...
