Thanks again guys! The performance increase this new card, even if its not top line, has given me is night and day. We are well into weekend stress test two and I played many hours with acceptable framarates (between 16-40+, averaging near 30). Never noticed any lag or stuttering. It may not be...
OK, funny thing, but turning the case upside down dropped the max temp from 100 to 87 in consecutive sessions. Looks funny, but whatever. Good enough until I get another case. Thanks for the tip!
Was just down inspecting my "dead" CPU. Turns out that the fellow I had in doing some web design managed to infect it with a ton of viruses despite McAffee (one of two computers he did this too, the other one was an easy fix). Low level format now underway but I was thinking of just dropping the...
tried Portal again with the case open at full 1600x900 and it looks amazing, but gets way way too hot. Have backed off to 1275 or whatever and it runs at 75C, but now that I know what real resolution looks like I. Must. Have.
So I assume a micro ATX board will fit a ATX mid tower?
lol
Well, lurking the forums now to get up to speed on hardware trends to find that sweet spot between performance and cost for the next system. Lots to learn.
Actually, putting this new card in (even if not top of the line) jumped my overall WEI from 3.3 to 5.9, my vid WEI from 3.3 to 6.7, and freed my RAM up so that it jumped from 4.7 to 7.1 (same as the CPU rating--had no idea it was such a good processor). Now the bottleneck is the HD access speed...
Hit 91 during an extended L4D2 session. Opening the case dropped things to 80. Friend recommended EVGA Precision to up the fan speed. Thoughts on this plan?
Maybe I should consider it a feature? -- Built in coffee cup warmer
Will keep an eye out for cases on sale. I gave it another brief test spin this am with the PCI slot open and it cooled off much quicker than last night. Still hit a max of 83, unless the max temp didn't reset on launch this am...
Thanks for the extra info ocre. I removed the VGA port (am running with the DVI adapter now) to open up the rear but there are already lots of ventilation along the side near the card's location so I'm not sure how much that might help. After my morning's meetings I'll post up a few pictures...
Thanks Termie.
One of the reviews on Newegg was a fellow who also installed it in his Acer Aspire. He says after 25 minutes of World of Tanks jacks the temperature to 75, and he is considering drilling holes in the case above the GPU. I will monitor the temperature closely this evening while...
Sure enough, have one in the drawer of this desk. Is there an advantage to using the adapter off the DVI or should I not worry about it unless I need the extra ventilation?
Thank you! I really appreciate the help you all provided. Having been out of fussing over hardware for several years, coming back to it is just an overwhelming crush of numbers.
Indeed, this card seems an ideal upgrade for this particular system, and I recommend it for other Acer buyers. I was...
Yes, the jump in performance is similar to the first time I launched GLQWCL.exe with my new (to me) Voodoo 2, then again when I junked that for a TNT2 Ultra.
That is my card yes. The low profile bracket actually uses both PCI slots (the SVGA plug goes in the second, which is why I had removed...
Installed the new vid card this am. I removed the svga plug only to discover that my monitor only has an SVGA cable. Odd. Anyway, booted, Windows installed it, then I installed the latest drivers from nVidia. Then played the first map of L4D2 and holy moley, I had no idea how much of the game I...
Picked up an Asus GT 430 for $50 after rebate at my local store (I am in Canada and uncertain where newegg.ca ships from, and if my computer won't boot with this card I want to bring it back to exchange it for something lower on the food chain). Will plug it in and give it a go in the next day...
Local store has the 430 with a rebate that comes in at a little more ($10) than the linked to Newegg card so I think I will just go with that for the ease of return should it not work. Could I prevail upon you one last time for a link to an Anand article on disabling onboard graphics? I assume I...
Apologies for not knowing how you abbreviate "power supply". Adding in the "unit" seemed unnecessary to me, but I will try to remember to do this in the future to ensure clarity in conversation. Recall I am new to anandtech lingo.
I think there is some confusion. I have an OEM Core 2 Quad that...
Should probably say I don't have a huge amount of time to play games at all these days, which is why I didn't bother building a new box, rather opting to get an OEM this time. Down the road I'll just upgrade the entire system should I want to play anything more than Left 4 Dead or SWTOR...
Yeah, annoyingly I only come in with 1.8 gigs of virtual ram, so the on-board card is just shy of minimum. I can confirm that the 7100 is unplayable.
ETA: going to side by side the 520 with the 430 now.
ETA2: 29 watts vs. 45 watts. I see your logic there
Confirmed by opening the case just now.
I'm not really interested in getting a new PS, case (although I do have my old hand built, with its now fried system, that I could scavenge for the case/PS--think the PS is 300 watts), and mobo just to upgrade to a slightly more powerful vid card. Its...
Thanks tweekboy. Hadn't looked into the GTX line, but putting the GT 430 (itself already an enormous leap in tech compared with my POS) side by side with the GTX 460 and those are some pretty impressive numbers. How hard will it be on my PS? Core clock is actually lower in the 460. Surprising.
Hi all,
A couple of years ago I picked up a decent OEM system at a very good price to replace my 5-6 year old hand built. I wasn't gaming anymore so this computer has been excellent for work/productivity applications. Well, now Star Wars: The Old Republic is coming out and I'm rethinking the...
