  1. PC GAMER CPU of the Year: Intel Core i5-8400

I have both an 8400 and 8700k, and truth be told, the 8400 was a champion for gaming. You wouldn't know the difference in 99% of games. Considering price, 8400 gets my recommendation all day long.
  2. 4k Gaming, my impressions of 4k vs 3440x1440

    Currently at 1440p 144hz, can't go back to 60hz. Looking forward to 4k 144hz :)
  3. What temps should I be getting: 8700k with EK Custom loop?

I was wondering the same thing. I'm having similar issues with an 8700k at 5GHz 1.34v with EK SE (slim) 360 rad in the same inwin 303 case and temps under prime hit ~80c, if not just over. If I drop to 4.8GHz 1.29v it shaves a good ~10c off temps to the high 60's. What CPU block are you using...
  4. Coffeelake thread, benchmarks, reviews, input, everything.

Thanks, I tried this but turbo behaviour remains the same - perhaps I'm missing something. I can manually set each core to x40 and adjust settings as suggested, however there is no change.
  5. Coffeelake thread, benchmarks, reviews, input, everything.

I have an i5 8400 in ASUS Strix z370-E and MCE doesn't seem to do anything aside from jacking up the voltages. Tried various settings including manual adjustment, but turbo behaviour remains the same.
  6. i5 8400 Bclk overclocking

Ha I wish. No it runs at 4.1, 4.0, 3.9 depending on the core count. Unfortunately I either can't figure it out, missed a setting to dsync frequencies, or 'Pro clock' isn't what I was hoping it was - like the Asrock boards that had a separate clock generator. I can only get 103 bclk out of it...
  7. i5 8400 Bclk overclocking

So far, the best I can get out of it is 4.1 single core turbo, with 2, 3, and 4 at 4.0, and 3.9 for 6 cores. Memory at 3700 cl14.
  8. i5 8400 Bclk overclocking

Well that's the thing, I'd like to adjust bclk without frying components.. I have NVMe drive installed etc. On another note, I just pushed memory from 3200mhz to 3600mhz CL14 and it didn't even blink. No tweaking at all, it just works, very impressed.
  9. i5 8400 Bclk overclocking

Hi forum, I couldn't get hold of 8700k at launch so have bought an i5 8400 until later in the year. I have an ASUS Strix Z370-E motherboard that states it has 'ASUS Pro Clock Technology that enables up to 432MHz base clock overclocking'. The diagram seems to indicate a dedicated 'Pro clock'...
  10. Gsync doesn't do a damn thing

Do you see any tearing or judder when gaming? No? Then Gsync is working its magic. Without Gsync you will see judder when vsync is ON and fps fall below refresh rate Or with vsync OFF you will see tearing Gsync fixes both of those issues.
  11. Am I crazy for Founders Edition?

I prefer reference too OP, for a few reasons. I've also owned a number of custom and reference designs of the same model and tbh I always find the advantages of custom boards to be far over stated. I always seem to manage decent overclocks on par with most custom designs, and never really find...
  12. guru3dDoom Vulkan Benchmarks

GTX980Ti user here. Vulkan gives me a slight gain of ~3% or so, but it certainly doesn't feel as smooth. It feels/looks like MGPU with poor frame pacing. I take it this is an Nv only feature?
  13. Would It Be Best To Buy An Ultrawide or Just Game 21:9 on a Native 16:9 screen?

I must be missing something. I don't understand why you don't have black bars when running 21:9. There should be a black bar along the top and bottom of screen to fit the 21:9 aspect ratio onto a 16:9 display. Just like running, for example, 16:9 1280x720 on a 4:3 1280x1024 display. There will...
  14. Nvidia Showcase: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is Drop Dead Gorgeous in 4K

I had my doubts but in actual gameplay the Nv method does look significantly better imo. I didn't pick up on it at first, but having a more correct umbra/penumbra really does look more realistic as you navigate around obstacles etc. Aside from quality, it's also very clean in motion with little...
  15. 6700K or 5820K?

Thanks for the link. 6600k aside, those results reinforce the opinion 6700k is better for a gaming rig than 2011-3 alternatives, for both price and performance. Entire platform is cheaper and generally performs on par, give or take a couple % depending on the game, and it should oc higher in...
  16. 6700K or 5820K?

Depends. For a gaming rig with 144hz panel I'd go 6700k. If you use 60hz either would be fine. I think I could get more performance out of the 6700k for 99.9% of games. ~10% faster core speed plus a higher oc. That said, now's not a bad time to jump on 6 cores and it'll perform just fine all...
  17. Which PC gamer are you?

Both depending on the game. Some are better on a monitor with KB/M and headphones, others are better on a large TV with gamepad and surround sound system. I also play PS4 both ways, sometimes as intended on TV with gamepad, other times on monitor with KB/M and headphones.
  18. Fury cards will NOT have HDMI 2.0 outputs

I thought 4k content required HDCP 2.2 support? Fury has DP 1.2a, where as 1.3 is needed for HDCP 2.2 support according to the specs.
  19. [Rumor (Various)] AMD R7/9 3xx / Fiji / Fury

    I thought 380 was a 285 refresh, and 380x will be a full Tonga chip?? (1792 v 2048 shaders). Also read 380/x may have a 384 bit bus and 3GB..?
  20. GTX 980Ti finally launched - MSRP $649 - Reviews

Realistically the reference blower isn't too bad. I could use it without issue. I've owned reference 580's, 680's, 780's, 5870's, 4870's, 7970's, and by all accounts the Ti is quieter than those cards. It's barely louder than 295x2.. OC'd it produces less noise than a stock 290 in "quiet"...
  21. Need help with 4k IPS monitor choice

Great info in the first 2 posts, thanks guys. I knew of the ASUS coming out, but didn't know about the LG already available. What other options are there for 4k freesync/gsync displays atm, that are not TN??
  22. [WCCF] AMD Radeon R9 390X Pictured

The chip is surely a new revision as well as PCB, and as such it'll likely attain higher clocks and lower power draw. Not saying it's going to be earth shattering, but improvements to both of those areas none the less. It could well match or surpass 980 performance but power consumption will...
  23. [computerbase] Project CARS benchmarks

Or perhaps some people just like better image quality, features, and functionality. :hmm: 5800 series for example had a hardware issue that affected texture filtering, causing very poor transitions between mipmaps which can be seen here. Textures also shimmered in motion. Transparency MSAA...
  24. Titan X

Stock TitanX seems perfectly reasonable to me and if an oc'd TitanX matches a stock GTX580 I'd be content with that. I couldn't really hear my 580's, or at least I didn't find them intrusive, but then again I don't have my rig on the desk next to me.
  25. [TFTCentral] Acer announces two F/G-Sync 34" ultra-wide 1440p monitors(75 Hz)

It is imo. One of my displays is a Dell U2913WM and I run it oc'd to 75hz. It feels more responsive and motion is noticeably smoother. Not a major difference, but about what you would expect from a 25% increase in refresh rate.
  26. Grand Theft Auto V Becomes Gaming Evolved Game Title with Contact Hardening Shadows

Softer shadows look better imo. I suspect there is more shimmer in motion with hard shadows.
  27. why are Geforce GTX 970 reference cards so hard to find?

I've tried both in MGPU and blowers give me better results over extended periods. Not all blowers are created equal of course, 670's were total garbage for instance. When was the last time you ran 3-way yourself RS? I've had 4 3-way systems, and another 4 dual GPU systems.
  28. why are Geforce GTX 970 reference cards so hard to find?

I prefer reference blowers myself. I find them better for MGPU configs and like that heat is exhausted out of the case.
  29. [Sweclockers] Asus MG279Q is to have the same panel as Acer XB270HU

So are you saying 80-144fps/hz has equal latency between the techs? I'm aware AMD's solution allows you to disable vsync above and below, which is almost a must, but tbh I think Nv will add that option shortly. I'm not too concerned that gsync offers better synchronisation below 37 fps or so on...
  30. [Sweclockers] Titan X in SLI

Numberz r from teh webz. 780 boost clock is 902mhz. Max boost can vary quite a lot. I disabled it and just set +350 constant. Reference coolers have their place, especially in MGPU - I actually prefer reference (providing it can do the job). Tahiti has boost clocks also. In fact it's the first...
  31. [Sweclockers] Asus MG279Q is to have the same panel as Acer XB270HU

Exactly. I'm most interested in if there's any latency advantages between the two techs in say the 80 to 144hz range, or any other differences. From what I understand AMD's solution may prove to be better here, as the gsync module stores a 1 frame buffer (is this correct?).
  32. [Sweclockers] Titan X in SLI

Yeh, there are work arounds but really there's no excuse to not have it on par with the competition after all this time. 290x has 56% higher pixel fill rate than GTX780. GTX780 has 28% higher pixel fill rate than Tahiti. Tahiti and GTX780 both have 288GB/s memory bandwidth, 290x has 320GB/s...
  33. [Sweclockers] Titan X in SLI

Not very good frame times there, but that's of little consequence to me. I play BF4 at 1080p with a 147fps cap, at which frame times are very good. Good job from AMD all the same though. It can surpass them at stock clocks and high resolutions sure. Both oc'd at lower resolutions is a...
  34. [Sweclockers] Titan X in SLI

Large Kepler overclocks quite well in comparison though, but sure Hawaii has certainly improved more since launch, much like Tahiti did. Hawaii really shows its strength in higher resolutions too, largely thanks to ROP count and pixel fill rate. Keplers performance degrades much quicker due to a...
  35. [Sweclockers] Titan X in SLI

I don't think 960 was aimed at anything beyond 1080p tbh. It's a mainstream card for the most mainstream of resolutions. Kudos to AMD for rebranding Tahiti. It worked out well for them, albeit not ideal for an efficient next gen part. And you're right, AMD are certainly the value option. Many...
  36. Titan X Launch

Reference blowers are fine, at least well engineered ones. Shame about the price, this is one serious piece of hardware.
  37. [Videocardz] GeForce GTX TITAN X specifications Update GPUZ

Between GM200 and 390/x, I'll get whichever has more pixel fillrate, bandwidth, and vram, for 4k. Atm it's looking in favour of AMD, especially if the price is right. My only doubts are CFX vs SLI support.
  38. [Rumor/Speculation] GTX Titan X 12GB vs R9 390X 4GB vs Unknown GM200 GPU

If they're released with reference AIO units, you can bet your ass it's for the same reasons the FX9590 was. I'll leave it up to you to decide if that's a good thing or not.
  39. [Rumor/Speculation] GTX Titan X 12GB vs R9 390X 4GB vs Unknown GM200 GPU

The issue with a reference AIO unit is that it implies the GPU is going to be a power sucking, fire breathing monster. The only other products that come with water cooling as standard are exactly that. 295x2 and FX9000 series. They come with water cooling because they require them, not...
  40. Replacement for GTX 970

I've owned one 3-way CFX and two 3-way SLI systems. Was able to get pretty good scaling on all 3 systems, with the 3rd GPU on par with 2-way scaling. Sometimes it takes some tweaking ofc. I'd say it's worth it if your display/s warrant it.
