Does the e-series have a lid that is 'locked' shut (can't think of a better word). I remember that even my acer from 6 years ago had little tabs that held the lid together until opened by the sliding mechanism... why don't laptops have that any more? Now they flop around when you carry them and...

I guess I read too much into your initial post :( Well to answer your actual question... intel is moving atom to an integrated SoC (system on a chip) indicating a move towards phone/tablet implementations. Ivy bridge is, in the simplest terms, everything else "Intel"... basically any form...

675m or 7970m

Yes, slower but 660m is kepler while 675m is just a rebadged 580m. Are there any other considerations (price, battery life, heat, etc...?) For pure gaming performance it looks like the 7970 is superior based on the benchmarks posted above...

Uh no actually OP has no idea what he is talking about... he is praising apple's ipad 3 resolution and then complaining about 1366 x 768... which is the standard laptop resolution. I highly doubt he is complaining about resolution on "pc" tablets... considering the title is "to all laptop...

A lot of newer ultrabooks with 'non-user serviceable components' means things that you can't really upgrade/replace.... which can really be anything especially with those super thin laptops that don't even let you open them up

Try googling Clevo or any of the other resellers listed here. I don't have experience with them (my friend had a sager... didn't last too long though) although I hear they are very good for price and power. Cooling I hear is alright as well, but mostly because they are (relatively) huge...

Yes wait for ivy bridge. Why even ask? If he can afford to wait, ivy bridge will be better. If not, sandy bridge will be cheaper. Anyway on a more serious note, ivy bridge should be only slightly more powerful cpu-wise (not really anything crazy) but there should decent improvements in battery...

Do you need an optical drive? If not, why not get an optical bay hard drive caddy, buy a cheaper ssd and keep the original hdd that comes with your laptop for storing things that don't require ssd speeds (music, movies, installer files etc...) Anyway, if you can wait why not wait for ivy bridge...

Yea, llano is good for basic computing, and light gaming. Check out this deal here. A8 vostro 3555 for $479. Swap in a 120gb ssd ($100 sata2, $150 sata3) and another stick of 4gb ram ($15-$20, why not) and you should have a pretty quick machine for under 700. edit: $0 upgrade for backlit...

I would assume any notebook with a touch screen is also one that you can 'write' on. A tablet form would make it easier to use (either purely tablet form, or one with a screen that can rotate/flip into a tablet form) When buying any laptop, I would go for one with the cheapest ram/hard drive...

Unless he isn't using his own money, I'm sure he'd rather get the laptop that fulfills his requirements rather than adding in parts he will never use just to spend more money.... I mean even if he had to spend $1000 a cpu upgrade would do him more good than a gpu upgrade based on his uses.

i5 for sure... although the ssd is quite small, you can still make full use of it if you are careful and you WILL notice a huge difference in 'speed' and responsiveness. Also, the higher resolution helps a lot.... try going to a store and seeing it for yourself - the difference between 1600x900...
