WinXP Install

Why can't you just boot from the WinXP CD and let the setup program step you through it? You can go clean or you can do an upgrade install. I would never try to run a Windows NT / 2K / XP install from within Windows (or from DOS) unless I absolutely had to. Regards, Jim

Installing XP on a fresh Format..ANYTHING SPECIAL ?

If you're going to use NTFS as your file system, use the setup program to partition the disk that way at install time. If you CONVERT from FAT32 to NTFS later, you'll wind up with 512 byte clusters. My $.02. Regards, Jim

Well, maybe, but pro has some other distinguishing features, too. File-and-folder-level security and encryption are fully implemented in pro, but I don't think they are in home edition. I think MS intelligently differentiated the two in trying to eliminate features that might catch neophytes...

Yes, it sounds to me as though you've got it figured right. Those Ghost images are undoubtedly the issue. In addition to there not be being much free space, the huge size of the files has got to be a real show-stopper for the defragger. There just isn't room enough to move those big suckers...

Were the numbers before and after the defrag run the same, or did they change? The "lite" version of Diskeeper (and even the commercial version) is not a single pass defragger. If a drive is heavily fragmented you usually have to re-run the defragger several times. Win2K's inbuilt defragger...

It's under the Environment button on the Advanced tab in the System Properties dialog, I think. Egad! It's been so long since I've used NT4 that I'm having trouble remembering! There should be both USER environment variables and SYSTEM environment variables listed.
