  1. Info Asus, Gigabyte and Asrock adding Vermeer and Renoir support to A320 boards. (Update: 1.2.0.7 adds Cezanne support to 300 series)

Thanks to all who posted info... I was hoping to drop a 5700g into my Asus B350 ROG Strix, sounds like I need to start researching Alder Lake this time around.
  2. .

I still have a BenQ elevator music stuck in my head, 15 years later, from being on hold with them for 60+ minutes. BenQ BenQ I'm so craaazy... crazy in love with yooou... BEN-Q! Hopefully it's better now. God, how I wish I couldn't still hear that awful song when I think about that.

  4. Daisy chain switches or bash a hole in my wall?

The switch arrived and is installed, as you all said there is no noticeable ill effects. Thanks for saving my wall undue harm and hours of frustration. :)
  5. Daisy chain switches or bash a hole in my wall?

My house is wired with CAT6 from the basement where the cable model feeds an 8-port unmanaged switch that distributes out to the rest of the house. I only have one line running to my office, which has 2 computers. The hole through which the wire is fed from the basement into the office is...
  6. Rant: Never buy Samsung Electronics again.

I've had abysmal luck with Sony to the point that you couldn't pay me to deal with that company ever again. Sorry to hear your luck, you're not alone.
  7. Drop the darn Obama phone

  8. Bias, lapdogs and the media's dying credibility.

This thread reminds me of something I read about the two main newspapers in Soviet Russia -- something along the lines of "one told you what the gov't thought and the other told you what the gov't wanted you to think."
  9. Drop the darn Obama phone

You guys are right - I'll edit my post to not perpetuate inaccuracy. Too bad I didn't find this last night: http://money.cnn.com/2012/10/26/technology/mobile/tracfone-free-phones/index.html They talk about 2008 being the correct year that cell phones were in allowed, which was under...
  10. Drop the darn Obama phone

You're partially right... Lifeline started in '84 (Reagan), which subsidized landlines to low-income people. In 2008, it was expanded to anyone receiving food stamps and to cover cell phones. Now, what about Tracfone - a (the largest?) provider of these gov't subsidized mobile phones...
  11. Drop the darn Obama phone

I do not. Having paid for both a land line and a cell phone, the former is vastly cheaper for local calls. The link below talks about increased cost of the program but does not appear to discriminate between increased cost and increased utilization...
  12. Drop the darn Obama phone

http://youtu.be/tpAOwJvTOio You really think those phones are being used to get jobs? I worked in downtown Detroit for nearly 8 years, which was enough to know what gov't hand-outs do to people and their work ethic. Besides, why a cell phone ($$$$) instead of a landline ($)?
  13. Drop the darn Obama phone

How are any of those electronic gadgets necessities? "I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it." - Ben Franklin, On the Price of Corn and Management of the Poor, November 29, 1766 I also find it funny to use...
  14. Obama Care is a disaster

Sure. I'm not going to argue whether this is really feasible, rather the ideal we should be working toward. - Eliminate red tape as much as possible. Put healthcare back in the hands of physicians rather than lawyers and business people. - Basic coverage for everyone, but it's a...
  15. Obama Care is a disaster

Sounds about right... but even that will vary depending on who / how it's paid. I've heard the professional fee collected is usually ~$200-250.
  16. Obama Care is a disaster

Again, anecdotal, but a friend is working close to 80hrs per week because his employer does not want to hire with the upcoming Obamacare changes. An MRI typically runs $2000 - 5000, including both the technical and professional fees. That's not what is paid, but what is generally quoted as...
  17. Obama Care is a disaster

Anecdotal stuff, but probably more useful than the garbage biased articles. - my best friend operates a small civil engineering firm. The penalty to not insure is far cheaper than the cost to insure. And the cost to insure has continued to increase - regardless of pre- or post-Obamacare...
  18. dems want to take your guns

Too bad we can't kick out the lot. I'm tired of being told what's good for me.
  19. Conservative Dr.Ben Carson Speaks Out Against obama

Because we get paid to treat patients. You do realize that a physician's practice operates very much like any other small business? It's too bad that very attitude denounced by Dr. Carson rears its ugly head here - the inability or unwillingness to listen to the other side of a political...
  20. New semi-gaming laptop for Christmas...

http://zenbook.asus.com/zenbook/?c=u500vz Would that fit the bill? Unfortunately I can't find anywhere that's selling it yet. The touchscreen version is probably glossy (bleh), not sure on the non-touch. I really want a new laptop, too, but I also want to see what Haswell brings to the table...
  21. 27" 2560x1440 IPS vs 27" 120hz TN

I bought a Dell u2412m, which is IPS. I play the same type of games you play. Do not hesitate to get the IPS monitor.
  22. Tablet screen res question for ppl who read scientific journals

I want to replace my laptop, for which 95% of its use is email, web browsing, etc... the additional feature I really want is a more convenient way to view journal articles - since they're mostly pdf's now. The problem with my laptop (aside from my scorched thighs and it's a brick) is unless I...
  23. Looking for 23/24'' TN/IPS display for office work, Internet and movies

I got a u2412m and am really impressed... my Asus TN panel wasn't bad, I doubted what people said about IPS on this forum, but it really is that much better. I don't notice any gaming lag / ghosting, but then I only play D3 / WoW so I can't comment for FPS's.
  24. Opinions on AC Twin Turbo II?

Read the instructions, but that sticky crap for the little heatsinks really does work a lot better if you prime the surface of the chips by "erasing" them first. Honestly, every aftermarket kit I've ever dealt with is just as easy as changing your CPU's HSF.
  25. Should I wait or get something now?

Well, 1000W PSU certainly gives you a lot of headroom to do multi-GPU down the line. Unfortunately the lesser-600's are just rumor right now, and the stock of 680's seem to be very tight. I have a feeling we may be waiting a while before the 660/670 are actually available. :(
  26. Reference vs. non-reference lifespan

Theoretically, cooler = longer lasting. Realistically, most GPU's will outlive their usefulness if you're gaming. It also depends on the card and what you want out of it. I like aftermarket cooling that's quiet, which hasn't always been achieved with reference cards.
  27. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

Huzzah. I can't fathom how I would deal with Metro to write a scientific paper. Unless the OS reads my mind, it's going to focus on or resize the wrong thing over and over again. Sometimes I need an inactive window bigger than the active one. Sometimes I need three windows visible even...
  28. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

Evidently my laptop cannot support "snapping," which means 8 is useless to me when all things are Metro'd. Maybe they'll come to support the functionality I need with the same efficiency 7 gives me, but as it stands today it doesn't. It's not even a matter of "getting used to it,"...
  29. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

When did programs become apps? Or is that just how the cool kids talk these days? I'm with BD2003. It's not about getting used to something, it's breaking what worked very well on a desktop. I hope Microsoft accommodates people like me without sacrificing what will work for tablets. I think...
  30. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

When you have to follow up the word Vista with "yeah, but it wasn't *that* bad...", well... The easiest fix I can think of is to let the user default programs to either launch in the desktop or as a Metro-full-screen (when available). This could be accomplished system-wide or on a...
  31. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

I think one of the great strengths of Windows has been the ability to multitask efficiently, which the standard desktop with its taskbar and Start button do very well. So... My perception is that this is what Metro's theme is: full-screen "apps," your current focus is all you see. Anything...
  32. Windows 8 Consumer Preview Feedback Thread

The Metro GUI is terrible for multi-tasking on a desktop / laptop. Let's say I'm putting together a ppt presentation. I'm using the desktop and have ppt loaded, a couple of tabbed browser pages and Paint. Now I need to launch Word -- I have to go back to the Metro menu to click on the tile -...
  33. Anyone a lawyer and want to sue Sony? (bad firmware upgrade)

That's good to know. I guess if it's not broke, don't fix it... ignore when your blu-ray tells you to update the firmware if everything works.
  34. Anyone a lawyer and want to sue Sony? (bad firmware upgrade)

It's what the network firmware upgrade did on its own.
  35. Anyone a lawyer and want to sue Sony? (bad firmware upgrade)

The end-users will get nothing. I guess I'm just frustrated... no one likes throwing out ~$100.
  36. Anyone a lawyer and want to sue Sony? (bad firmware upgrade)

It was the same 007 firmware as in that guy's blog. I updated the firmware a while ago without issue, which leads me to believe there's something wrong with this one on certain machines given the blog. I guess it's no surprise Sony doesn't want to do the right thing, the loss of one customer...
  37. Anyone a lawyer and want to sue Sony? (bad firmware upgrade)

I wish I would have found this before I attempted to upgrade the firmware on my out-of-warranty Bluray player (BDP-S360): http://www.seancamden.com/2009/10/24/sony-bdp-s360-firmware-update-007-wrecked-my-player/ TLDR is in the process of upgrading the firmware, the unit crashes and ends up...
  38. nVidia 6600GT AGP quirky POST problem?

Asus 6600GT AGP on an Abit KD7. BIOS was flashed, CMOS dumped, and yet everytime the machine is powered off and i try to power on, no post. If you switch PSU off, then on, hit the power button, THEN the machine boots normally. Any ideas?
  39. 19" 12ms, dvi LCD $210 AR @newegg

Great monitor, for about 6 weeks. Mine died, only displays a blank white screen now regardless of being plugged in at all versus DVI versus VGA. *sigh* I believe the complaints on the user reviews on NewEgg, it looks like I'll be out of a monitor for about 4-6 weeks with transit and "ten...
