The requirement I understand and sympathize with. I used to moderate a few forums. It was just the criticism that I didn't find appropriate. Thanks for taking the time to answer, I do appreciate the job you do.
I don't understand the hostility. If I came to buy or sell something, what's the problem? I'm using that forum for its intended purpose and I'd wager my "helpful" post percentage is better than 80% of your existing members. You're bagging on the wrong guy.
I spend my days in IT, I rarely feel like talking about it extensively afterhours, much less discussing it in a forum. I at least tried to be helpful with my replies. If you put up a barrier to F/S/T, people like me who only will visit occasionally pretty much HAVE to "neff" to get in. I hope...
Bomgar is AWESOME but is also pricey.
HelpdeskVNC is kinda... meh but gives you full admin control, plus it works if they reboot in SAFE MODE! Haven't seen anything else do that yet.
LogMeIn, Join.Me are okay but can be tricky with rights elevations unless you're using the paid version.
Depends on how important the graphics are to you - the CPU isn't going to be much faster, but the onboard graphics in the IvyBridge chips are going to be VASTLY improved.
Agreed with tailon. Get a gigabit switch and cat5e or cat6 cabling.
Do NOT get vanilla cat5. It's much slower than cat5e.
If you want to get really fancy you could get a patch panel mounted to the wall so you can number jacks on the wall, number the jacks on the panel and plug em into a...
Nah. Unless you're running a LOT of computers I don't see it being worth it. Licensing is expensive. Plus if your AD controller goes down you can't authenticate to the domains (you can likely log in under cached credentials but it still would cause issues)
Only reason is if you want to play...
I wonder if that device would work for piggybacking weak connections, or if it actually has to be closer to the router than the laptop trying to get the connection...
For a small biz environment it's fine. We're running vanilla Windows servers with Hyper V and virtualized SBS servers, and the occasionall additional VM app server (also usually vanilla Win server). Saves money and meets our needs.
For larger companies I still think VMware is the way to go.
It's fine to have your cablemodem/router be the same thing. Those combo devices usually have a 4-port switch built into the back of them.
Personally, I'd get a gigabit switch. Plug all of your computers into the switch, then run one cable from a port on the switch to your router. That way...
Chrome's pretty great between the design, stability and lack of manual maintenance. But I don't really trust anything put out by an advertising company, which is all Google really is.
SmartDeploy is the best imaging software I've found. It's hardware independent so you make ONE image from a VM and combine with various driver packs at the deployment stage. You can deploy from a PE server or make deployable media.
Best backup software I've found is ShadowProtect. Even better...
You could set up everything the "right" way and use Deep Freeze. That way everything resets to how it was when they reboot. That does NOT allow them to save any changes to anything on the hard drive, though.
For what it's worth, it could be something as simple as a bad UPS. I was having identical problems on a unit with a dead battery. I've got it on a power strip for now and it works fine. Even if you don't have a UPS, I'd try a different power source.
If the BSODs continue, look in c:\Windows\Minidump. They usually put a log file there that you can analyze using the Windows log file tools with the right symbol files.
Have you tried the obvious yet? Swap the cable? Try a different SATA port? DVD drives are easy to come by too, just throw another one in there and give it a go.
