I had the very same problem with an aureal sq2500....the game port couldn't find my MS Sidewinder 3d pro....if this is what you are using go to the MS site as they have a new vxd which fixes the problem.
Just for your information, I may have lucked out with a Celeron 566 from All Star, its a week 33 OEM SL46T (Malay)which I have running @953 (112x8.5)on an Iwill Slocket II & Tyan Tsunami 1830S, it's running at 1.7v with a heatsink and fan which are probably not as good as the stock Intel...
