I can't say for NY but rifles and shotguns have less paperwork possibly and possibly less waiting periods as well. Try buying and good AR15 rifle. If you want a shotgun try a 20 gauge. Handguns REQUIRE waiting periods and more paperwork in some places.
Buy a Ruger SR9 or SR9C or a Glock model 17 or 19. Buy ammo, a range bag, shooting glasses, ear muffs, a magazine loader, a baseball cap and a gun case with a lock. Go to the range and practice with it. You might also want to pick up a LEATHER holster.

Maybe I am overstating the ease of use for the Playstation 1. To me the console On/reset/eject buttons were easy to see and so were the controller buttons. The CD door was also durable and easy to see. I do have a vision problem so my opinions are based on that too possibly.
