  1. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

I did see those as well however the graphics cards on those models were either underwhelming or massively out of my budget range of ~$700. The XPS has a FAR better screen but for the model with the nvidia 1050, it was $350 more and 50% slower. I am fully aware that laptops aren’t as powerful as...
  2. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

It has the 1060 maxQ variant with the single stick of 16GB single stick (so I only need to buy a single stick instead of replacing two 8GB sticks). It was a “scratch and dent” model with a very light 1 1/2” scratch that I can barely see; for $30 over my budget, it was worth the extra HDD, ram...
  3. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

I ended up buying the Dell Inspiron 7577 from the Dell outlet this past Memorial Day after Costco ran out of stock. The model I got was the core i7-7700 with 1 x 16GB Ram and the 256GB NVMe SSD+ 1TB HD for ~$720. The screen on it is OK, nothing to write home about but the gaming performance is...
  4. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

I’m more tempted to buy the 1060 dell and make up the difference by selling a collectible or a finished side project. Seems like it would be worth it since I’d likely use it every day, unlike my desktop that mostly collects dust.
  5. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

My desktop is a modified Alienware X51 case with a 3rd gen core i5, nvidia 1060GTX 6GB, SSD and 16GB of Ram. RAM prices kept me from upgrading the rest so it’s a bit lopsided.
  6. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

It’s very tempting since it’s the update to the Dell Inspiron I was originally looking at Best Buy. The ironic thing is this would be on par with my desktop, but with a far newer processor.
  7. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

I completely frogot about costco as an option. I am a member and they add in a free two year warranty to all electronics purchases. Ill have to swing by there this week. You went with the Acer nitro 5 and you were happy with it, i was kn the fence with the hinge and flex of the chasis. I know a...
  8. Laptop advice for work/light gaming around $600-70ish

Just like the title suggests I’m looking for a laptop that can do office work and some light gaming, specifically Civilization VI. I bought a Thinkpad E450 with an intel i5-5200u (HD5500 GPU), 720p screen, 8GB of RAM and a non-SSD HD and it works...barely...but the screen is a MAJOR letdown. I...
  9. Looking for recommendations for a "best value" beater laptop ...

Dell has an eBay page for their off-lease stuff and they have quite a few of laptops in the $200-300 range http://stores.ebay.com/Dell-Financial?_rdc=1 Admittedly I check it every 1-2 weeks; you have to go through the description later to find the gems, the laptops all have different specs even...
  10. How long do you use/keep a laptop?

I have an aluminum MacBook from 2008 that's been through some pretty heavy use, but after SSD swap and 8GB of ram, still running strong. My wife has an old 2006 C2D MacBook, finally showing its age. I recently bought a HP elitebook 8460p off of eBay as my "new" windows 7 laptop, ought to hold me...
  11. Problem with lab scales

What temperature range are you working in? Most scales are calibrated at STP (20C) and will fluctuate within a range for temperature. The site that you linked to only has scales that operate from 15-30C, so if you need to weigh something outside of that range, you would need a scale that has an...
  12. Are you buying Haswell?

+1 My a8-3820 desktop will hold on, but my C2D 2.0GHZ aluminum MacBook could use a change. My wife's MacBook is still rocking intel GMA 950, I wonder how much an improvement haswell would be.... ;)
  13. Is this build ok for gaming. (For my daughter)

I don't think anyone asked, what resolution and size is your monitor set at? My wife also plays sims 3 on my amd x4 640 with a GTX 460 and 6gb of ram. Had the same stuttering issues too and it's a 1680 x 1050 22" 120hz monitor.
  14. Which setup would you choose?

If you plan to use the savings towards a SSD purchase, then definately go this route. As someone who uses office a lot and does a lot of websurfing, the difference between a machine with a slower processor and SSD vs a faster processor and mechanical HD is noticeable even in light uses.
  15. First Steamroller processor core exposure

CTho9305, if I may ask, what did you work on while at AMD? I'm not asking for specifics, I just wanted to get an idea what kinds of things people can do when working in research and development, design, ect... I'm always amazed how much people here know about CPU design and implementation here...
  16. 20nm DDR3

Good luck finding them, they are all branded as crucial ballistix ram, that's pretty much all that is in stock anywhere.
  17. The AMD Kabini Review: A4-5000 APU Tested

What about if the leap was from llano to Richland? Would that qualify a wait?
  18. Hello need help~

I had that card once upon a time and it had a bad heat issue as well. The string isn't exactly a good thing to use, I would say that a pci fan in the next slot or two 80mm fans tied together and secured to the empty pci slot would be a lot better since they wouldn't be touching the card. FYI, my...
  19. So my girlfriend wants me to get rid of my triple monitor setup

So it's not just my wife that does that with the coffee mugs? ;)
  20. My experiences while building my first mini-ITX rig.

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to thank gamefreakgcb for the pics of how he got around the problem with the psu extension cable and the top rack blocking the CPU fan. That was exactly what I needed to see someone had done! That's why I like AT forums so much, so useful.
  21. So my girlfriend wants me to get rid of my triple monitor setup

As someone who recently went through grad school I have to ask, how did you find the time to game? ;) Have you considered mounting one of them on the wall, assuming that the desk is in a corner?
  22. Zap's SFF LAN box

You said awhile ago you have a SG-05 and the antec 310 and I'm trying to figure out which one to get. If you had to take the thing with you everyday, which one would you prefer? Is there a big difference in build quality? I'm wondering because I hear some people complain about the Sg-05's build...
  23. Slim MiniITX case that will fit stock Intel coolers

I know I don't use mine all that much, maybe once a month or so. Pretty easy just to toss an external drive in the desk and use as needed.
  24. Slim MiniITX case that will fit stock Intel coolers

@ Zap I realized after rereading my last two posts, they sound confrontational and they weren't meant to be. I was just trying to share my experience with that particular case.
  25. Slim MiniITX case that will fit stock Intel coolers

I'm glad you decided on a case and I hope everyone was of some help.
  26. Slim MiniITX case that will fit stock Intel coolers

I didn't see that he was using an intel i7-s part, the stock heatsink should be plenty. The cabling in the antec case tends to restrict airflow going out of the case. I have an A8-3820 in my isk-110 and I had overheating issues until I changed the cooler and redid the cabling to account for the...
  27. Slim MiniITX case that will fit stock Intel coolers

Can you define slim in your case? A stock intel cooler is 46mm tall and the antec isk 110 will BARELY fit it in there, I know because I have one. Fully loaded, it's about the same weight as my aluminum MacBook. It's a good little case, but the only fan is the processor fan, something to keep in...
  28. Pre-charge home water accumulator anyone?

I'm glad someone understood the desired solution better than I did. Just wanted to apologize for misunderstanding and not answering the actual question.
  29. Pre-charge home water accumulator anyone?

greenhawk is absolutely correct, a larger tank will help stabilize your pressure dropoff. If your tank has a bladder system installed, then that is what is creating the pressure in the water line. Another thing you have to worry about is if you are disinfecting the water in the tank or in the...
  30. Reccomend a laptop for a college Freshman

Building off of what magnusthebrewer said, have you considered a mini-itx system with a cheaper laptop that you can take to class? That way if you HAVE to take your desktop to do something, you could easily take it. My mini-itx is about 4 lbs and is more portable than my laptop (excluding the...
  31. New small mATX/mini-ITX tower/desktop.

btw, I forgot to ask, did you want benchmarks on the llano system that I have? if you give me the benchmarks you want run, i'll post them so you get a good comparison since any benchmarks on the A8-3820 are a pain to find.
  32. New small mATX/mini-ITX tower/desktop.

oops, didn't notice your location... the seller ships smaller items to Scandinavia, you might be able to ask them about larger ones. I see that istarusa sells to some U.K. based distributers as well. Normally I wouldn't plug for a company whose product I didn't own myself, but we run their power...
  33. Ivy Bridge Netbook?

Yeah, the problem is just as pctc2 said, next month is when all the goodys come out. The only laptop ivy bridge skus that has been released are the quad core ones (at least so I've seen, I could be mistaken though). All the small form factors usually don't have the high end processors simply due...
  34. LF Mid/Low end Laptop recomendations

If you are looking at under $500, then you should be able to find a sandy bridge I5-24xx or amd llano a8 in that range. The amd will be considerably better at video tasks/gaming (for the most part) and the intel will be faster at most of the other tasks. Another option would be to go for an amd...
  35. New small mATX/mini-ITX tower/desktop.

Just so you know, the antec isk110 case only has a 90W power supply, I know b/c I have one for my mini-itx system. If you don't need a graphics card, I highly recommend this case; I have a llano a8-3820 w/ 8GB of ram and 2 hard drives (1 64GB crucial m4 SSD and 1 WD 250GB laptop drive) and I can...
  36. System hangs Quite frequently!

Have you tried to check the temperature on the CPU? Use something like HWmonitor to monitor the temp (or in your bios); you could have an issue with contact between the processor and the new cooler. You could have the processor fan working improperly as well.
  37. Zap's SFF LAN box

Not bad at all, I'll have to benchmark my lan build to compare. I have to ask, how much does that guy weigh? Weight and length were the only reasons stopping me from the shoebox-style case.
  38. Super-budget gaming PC, need advice on some parts

Well I can tell you that I have an A8-3820 llano and I can run skyrim on high or ultra settings (1440 x 900, i believe i had AA on, but I can check later) without any problems, so an A8-3850 should be more than adequate. I haven't benchmarked the system yet, but it suits my needs just fine. My...
  39. Extremely cheap build for a bud

Don't suppose there is a microcenter by you? They sell the processors cheaper than newegg does. I like it for the most part, but is there any chance you can spring for the extra $12 for the crucial m4 ssd? I've used most of the parts before and they have served me well, the only one I haven't...
  40. DIY case

Good luck. I was going to do the same thing in aluminum SFF, but I ultimately ran out of time. I'd suggest gutting a cheap case for switches/buttons and cabling, those were a pain for me to track down for a reasonable cost (that is if you come up with the kind of prices I did).
