Solved! first gen Ryzen RAM speed

2933 seems to be about the limit. My 1700 would do that with Samsung memory, but wouldn't post with anything higher no matter what I did. Using Micron dual rank DIMMs, the limit was 2400MHz. It just wouldn't go higher.

    My 1TB VelociRaptor Review

In my experience, the higher RPM a drive runs at, the less reliable it is. If you're running an array, active cooling is pretty much a must. There is also the vibration to consider, and those things are LOUD. Not to mention how much juice they suck. Which is what did them in when SSDs appeared...

    My 1TB VelociRaptor Review

Ah. A true blast from the past. I'm impressed it still works, 10.000RPM drives have never been the most reliable. Before SSDs became a thing I used to run RAID0 36GB Raptors. Those were the days.

Discussion Anyone else bored out of their mind due to mainstream CPU market stagnation?

Ah. That's because society has graduated to the level of Reverse Darwinism. Survival of the most idiotic. Idiocracy wasn't meant to be a documentary. (Slight sidenote, egoism isn't really compatible with long term survival. That's a scientifically proven fact. Yes, I'm scared. Not because of...

Question Can I use USB 2.0 cable and USB 2.0 port for a USB 3.2 SSD (accepting that speed will be slower)?

Yup. Brainfart. USB2 ports are usually (NOT ALWAYS, SO BEWARE) hard fused with 2A, so that's the real limit.

Question Can I use USB 2.0 cable and USB 2.0 port for a USB 3.2 SSD (accepting that speed will be slower)?

That might be an issue. USB2 only supplies 500mA@5V, so around 5W. This might be on the low side for a HDD, particularly with a longer cable. But if it works, I wouldn't worry about it.

    Question AMD Turion X2 64

Windows 10? Well, there is your problem. Windows Update absolutely kills older CPUs. You could try a lightweight Linux distribution, but I wouldn't expect too much. Which leads to; As others have pointed out, a Turion X64 isn't exactly state of the art. It's based on AMDs K8 core, which was...

Discussion Have Blu-Ray drives come down in price?

Yeah, I'm with you on that. Also because optical drives aren't the only use for 5.25" bays. As a work around, go external. You need something like this: https://icybox.de/product/archive/IB-550StU3S I makes choosing a case easier, since you don't have to worry about 5.25" bays. If you do...

Discussion Have Blu-Ray drives come down in price?

Well, here prices have stayed pretty much at the same level for the last 10-odd years. So adjusting for inflation, BD drive prices have come down a little. The biggest factor in not becoming cheaper is all the various licencing schemes BD drives have to implement. It's not just Sony taking a...

Question Asrock A520M-HDV + Athlons, yeah, no.

It does sound like a PCIe configuration error. Maybe something is hardwired in a certain way on that particular board model that expects a PCIe x4 connection? The AM4 Athlons do have an odd PCIe layout, everything else on AM4 has a x4 connection to the PCH.

    Question Why DVI???

Eh, you can do HDCP over DVI easily enough. My old (dual link DVI + Displayport) monitor is plenty capable of that. It's independent of the physical port. Except for VGA. No HDCP since it's analog.
  14. I

    Question Why DVI???

I'm going to have to agree with that. There really isn't much point in HDCP at all. Eventually, the video has to be decoded to a point where you get an actual picture and actual sound out of it. Or you'd be watching static on your screen and hearing static in your speakers. Nobody has quite...

    Question Why DVI???

Yeah. I remember having to use Displayport-to-DVI adaptors for some Optiplexses (7010?, think it was Ivy Bridge-based) 10-odd years ago. But they -did- have dual Displayport output from the IGP, which was very nice for the time.

    Question Why DVI???

HDMI is DVI with a different plug/socket design. The electrical signalling is the exact same up to 1200p. DVI doesn't do above that, except in dual link mode. But that isn't used much today. That's why there are cheap HDMI-to-DVI (and reverse) adaptors. Fun fact; the HDMI standard actually...

2500K... 6 years ago! My, how time flies!

It's a hobby. If it gives people satisfaction, then I'm not going to pass judgment on anyone. If only more would avoid doing that. Whether that involves computers, cars, boats, flying trapezes or whatever. Could it have been a 4200RPM drive? Those things were slower then frozen molasses...

Out of all the motherboard companies that went out of business, how did Biostar survive?

The "chipset" on AM4 is more of an I/O breakout box, then a "real" chipset. So it's not surprising if you don't need the additional features the X-series. Which amounts to more PCIe lanes and more USB ports, everything else is equal. Where the real difference lies is the VRM setup. Most A320's...

Question BEWARE! WD NAS drives only good for 3 years of PoH! (According to WDDA service - DISABLE on NAS if possible.)

That will certainly not fly within the EU for consumer use. Manufacturers are required to offer 2 years worth of warranty, starting at the date of purchase. Seagate can ***** all they want, they're not getting around that. We have pretty strong consumer protection.

Minimum recommended video ram for a new video card ?

I agree with that. For an alternative, a Radeon 6700/6750 should do well at 1440p. If you can get a good deal on a 6800, that'd be optimal.

Out of all the motherboard companies that went out of business, how did Biostar survive?

Now that is a trip down memory lane. We had 3-4 around various friends, a few more with various clients, it was always a rock solid board. The ability to reuse SDRAM was also a big plus.

Question are video card prices headed down yet?

Thank </deity> its mostly blown over. Prices are still -high-, but not insane or extreme anymore. At least for now. But I doubt prices will ever return to the level they had last autumn/winter. That was beyond both insane and extreme.

Question Has anyone tried a low powered Intel N100 processor yet? Successor to Jasper Lake

I think it depends on the drive*. They can't be worse then microSD cards*2. I would still prefer a HDD or real SSD, but sometimes it isn't practical. For long term use, there might be thermal issues though. * You can get 256GB for almost nothing today, so at least capacity will not be a...

Question Has anyone tried a low powered Intel N100 processor yet? Successor to Jasper Lake

Asrock has just launched ITX and DTX boards based on the N100. So not necessarily soldered down. They take standard DDR4 DIMMs. Performance wise, the N100 should equal a Skylake 6400/6500. So it's not slow. At 6W too.
  32. I

Question Has anyone tried a low powered Intel N100 processor yet? Successor to Jasper Lake

They'll handle that with ease. Performance is around OG Skylake, so plenty enough for appliance-type applications. You're correct these are "just" Alder Lake without performance cores, and a basic IGP attached. Just remember to put enough RAM in the box.

Question (ALERT!) PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs based on Phison E26 controller REQUIRE heatsink

If you could make a form factor which supplies both power and data within the same cable, we'd be onto something. If you make the connector "cable-optional" as well, that'd be absolutely rocking. I wouldn't mind a 1.8"'ish form factor like that one bit. As is, M.2 kind of wins by default...

Question (ALERT!) PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs based on Phison E26 controller REQUIRE heatsink

I can't see myself agreeing with that sentiment. If it was just a single cable, maybe. But it requires power too. Before you know it, we're back to the bad old days with cables everywhere. I'd much rather see PCIe expansion cards like WD's AN1500 for really high-end PCIe 5 SSDs. It's much...

Question (ALERT!) PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs based on Phison E26 controller REQUIRE heatsink

Back to cables? No thanks. I'd much prefer a simple PCIe card instead of more cables. Also, most people use laptops, so bigger market there. If you want a U.2 drive, there are plenty of M.2-to-U.2 adaptors available.

Question AMD HD 6850 compatible with a rog strix 650e setup?

Why? AM5 CPUs all have a basic IGP. It's likely faster then that old card, and has far more modern features. Next problem is drivers. 10 has a built-in driver for Terascale GPUs, but that's all you're ever going to get in the Windows department.
