Who has the slowest rig!?

Bummer, should have asked me this a few months ago: 486 25MZ w/ 16MB RAM Did have a decent modem though (56K). Played a lot of cool games such as tetris, some Ultima games, and even warcraft a couple of times... it was blast. Ps. did you know that tetris is now in 3D? It is amazing how far...

Don't wait periods allow for a more thorough background check? Also, I think waiting periods are designed to give a person time to cool down in cases where a gun might be seen as the only solution... I don't think a waiting period, if the theory proves to be true, is too much to ask in this...

damocles - The UK study really wasn't discussing the effects of gun control per se, so I don't see its relevance. Britian has had fairly strong gun regulations for quite some time now.

It would stimulate some but no where near the unemployment that would result from it. I just don't see it. Maybe if we were talking about toppling the auto industry or something.... but as shifrbv indicates, economies change and there is always some pain associated with such changes.

But what we dont want to do is go so drastically in one direction, our economy is greatly damaged and many people loose their jobs. Why do you think conservation will translate to lost jobs? Creating alternate energy sources might actually stimulate jobs.

I am still confused. Do you think that we, as a global community, should act aggressively to reduce greenhouse gas emmissions or not? Or does it not really matter because we will never know 100% the extend of climate instability these will cause?

In terms of teacher salaries - it is a matter of supply and demand. On one hand folks are saying we have crappy/semi-intelligent teachers, while on the other hand they are saying that teachers aren't underpaid. Well, if you want better teachers, you got to pay them more. Simple economics...

AaronP - these are all good ideas, but I seriously doubt that they would change much. What really needs changing are peoples attitudes toward education and the school systems in general. Just read some of these posts! Such hostility toward teachers, unions, schools, funding, and so on...

Parents certainly pay a large role in the degenerate nature of public schools. Some parents make it a living hell for teachers both directly and indirectly. This erodes morale across the board and diverts attention away from learning. Lack of funding is also a huge problem in many systems...
