    don't be sad, there are ide ssd drives too. alternatively, you can get yourself sata caddy which replaces the cd/dvd (this way i have added 640G sata drive to my x40. you won't get sata2 speeds but it's not a fileserver, right? :)

    you can use any of the lighter browsers (dillo, links2, midori, heck even properly configured firefox will do), there are plenty, also switch from kde/gnome to fluxbox or something similarly light, that way 256M of ram would be plenty. also, you can try building your own linux from scratch :)

    you can install adobe acrobat, it comes with acrobat distiller which can 'print' to pdf (it's a trial but..). so you can print the document and set properties for specified media (for example 'email', where data is scaled down). i personally use ghostscript to do that work: gs -q -dBATCH...

    it might be fried, disconnecting isn't normal behaviour regardless of the system. i have usb stick that works fine when connected via usb1 hub and constantly disconnecting when connected to the usb2

    you can also try checking if it shows in the bios boot drives (just to see if it's detected) and/or booting linux livecd. also you can go into windows device manager to see if it has any warnings (yellow triangles) and trying uninstall/reinstall them
