    Building first HTPC, opinions please

Most H77 boards have 2 SATA III ports, the B75 you linked to looks like it only has one. Take a look at this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157303 As for the CPU, both the HD 2500 iGPU's and the HD 4000 iGPU's can do 3D, so any Ivy Bridge CPU will suit your needs. If you...

    Building first HTPC, opinions please

Is the i3-3225 needed? you could get away with the i3-3220 if you don't plan on doing any gaming. Also, IMHO the Z77 board is a waste, the only difference the Z series has over the H series is the ability to overclock, however unless you buy a K series Intel CPU you can't overclock. Anything...

    First HTPC build / Opinions?

There was some being sold by Amazon for $99 + free shipping when I posted the link, looks like all that's left now are way overpriced. Newegg has them for $109 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...D=3938566&SID=

That is exactly what I am doing. Setting up a HTPC that will be connected to a HDTV and will stream to 2 Roku's and other devices via Plex Media Server. Will be completely cutting off cable.

HTPC build question (with light gaming)

I would say 380w - 400w would be sufficient. For the Silverstone cases the Silverstone Strider ST40F-ES is a good choice. If you feel the GD05B is too tall, take a look at the Silverstone ML03B, it is a very popular case choice. Only big differences are the restriction of 140mm PSU depth, 170mm...

HTPC build question (with light gaming)

Just wanted to point out that Intel's LGA 1155 socket is no more 'future-proof' than AMD's Llano. Trinity does come out soon though, but 2nd Quarter 2013 Intel will release Haswell with the LGA 1150 socket which is meant to last through Haswell and Broadwell until ~2018 I went with Intel for my...

Media Center . . . "Internet TV not available after September 20?!"

There are other ways to access Netflix, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Chances are that if Netflix support is removed that a plugin will appear shortly after to fill the void. Sounds to me though that with the new WMC they are just dropping free ITV support.

    HTPC build help.

LOL I agree about the SSD emoticon, it is annoying. As a suggestion, I believe the OCZ Vertex has an Indilinix controller, it is also SATA II. . I would suggest looking into something that is SATA III with a Marvell controller, much better reliability.

    HTPC build help.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/g2Pw Try this setup, its $40 cheaper then your original build. It has a cheaper CPU and Mobo, but includes a SSD with a WD Green. You can change your case to something like the Silverstone ML03B and get a cheap decent PSU to save a few more $'s. Also, why the Lenovo...

    Roku and Plex

Yeah, it is too bad that Roku doesn't have an XBMC channel, or that XBMC doesn't have a suitable media server solution. For the GUI, how easy is it for kids to navigate? is it pretty straightforward? Also, have you tried streaming over WiFi?

    Roku and Plex

Not sure if it will make a difference for you, but Plex on Roku will directly stream .MP4 H264, so having it in MKV causes it to transcode to .MP4. This is most likely the cause as to why you cannot fast forward more than 5 to 15 seconds. Try using handbrake to convert one of your movies to .MP4...

What is the best HTPC software?

I would tend to agree, for my HTPC I plan on using the Plex Media Server to stream to my devices, with XBMC as the client/frontend. PleXBMC looks to be a great plugin to allow XBMC to read the Plex library :)

Building a HTPC. Want to save as much $$ as possible.

Sorry, I was answering his question about whether or not the HDMI on the ASRock H77M would carry sound. I guess I worded it wrong, I will fix that. You are right though, DVI cannot carry an audio signal.

Building a HTPC. Want to save as much $$ as possible.

HDMI does carry sound. If no sound travels through then you most likely need to set your sound playback settings in windows to default to the HDMI if it is present. EDIT: DVI does not carry sound, on the new motherboard you just need to connect the HDMI from the motherboard to your TV HDMI Inputs

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

That's good to know :) I think handbrake would be much better than transcoding while streaming in the long run.

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

I have thought about it. Originally I had read that they don't do DLNA streaming, but I saw that they came out with a streaming version. Plex on Roku seems that it will work better overall because it has more of a graphical menu, which will be better for my kids who are 7 and under, along with...

LCD big screens make no sense

Except Plasma screens are pretty much pointless in a living room (or any room for that matter) with large windows, especially if tv gets any direct sunlight near it. You are also comparing a TV to a Monitor, of course the TV will look better. Go compare that Plasma next to a Series 7 or Series...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

Not worried about what it will play, worried about what Plex will need to transcode to stream to a Roku. Plex apparently can only play MP4 with H264 encoding directly, it will remux what it can, and transcode the rest.

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

The reason why I was going for Plex was because I was going to use the Roku 2 XD as a media streamer and it has a Plex channel. The streamer needs to have both Netflix capabilities and streaming ability. The Roku fit the bill nicely for not a whole lot of cost. There is also roConnect, but Plex...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

If I wasn't on a budget I would lol. If I could wrangle another $100 I would probably go up to a i5-3450, or even a i5-3570K if I could get it on sale. I will probably just have handbrake scheduled to start running after we go to bed, and set it to low priority so that if it doesn't finish...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

I was thinking of having handbrake just convert whatever was downloaded that day, have it only run between say 11pm and 7am, that way it runs when no one would be watching it. Plex will directly stream any mp4 with h264 encoding so by using handbrake I can enable Plex to stream without...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

Also was curious, would 8Gb of DDR3 be overkill? I was going to get 4Gb of the Ripjaws Low but they would be just a little too high if I chose to get an aftermarket cooler such as the Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev.B. I was then looking at the low profile Corsair Vengeance, but I could get 8Gb's...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

That's a good point. I wanted to go with H77 because it has USB3.0 and SATAIII and is future-proof a bit. The Gigabyte I think provides excellent value for the money. Does anyone have any experience with their 3D Bios? I also can probably daisy chain any case fan's together and connect them to...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

Thanks for all the input guys :D I think I have finally decided and will go with the i3-2120 (I can get it for $115 CAD which is a good price). For motherboards I am looking at the Gigabyte GA-H77M-D3H ($89) and the ASUS P8H77-M Pro ($121). The ASUS has 1 more forward SATAIII ports (6...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

Hmm, thought the M4 was pretty good, apparently it is not lol. The Big Shuriken apparently covers up the first 2 RAM slots on a 4 RAM slot board, it has a clearance of 32mm, would this be an acceptable substitute? I don't think it cover's up the RAM. Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build

so the i3-2105 would then be comparable to the i3-2100 just with HD-3000 graphics? If that is the case then my question is, is HD-3000 that much better than HD-2000 in terms of HTPC transcoding/encoding and playback to warrant an i3-2125 instead of just an i3-2120 or i3-2130? Also, would the...

Intel Vs. AMD in HTPC Build
