SL9UM q6600 - goal is 3GHz on lowest core voltage. Realistic expectations?

SL9UM is B3, right? If so, then I am pretty confident to say that that is not a realistic expectation, they clock pretty horrible (3.3'ish) even with increased voltage. G0's had much more headroom, my SLACR G0 did 400x8 on its default voltage (1.275v).

[EG] AMD CPU's performance get "massive boost" as devs optimize next-gen game engines

The article in the OP really highlights how ignorant most PC developers are. People have been screaming about horrible performance in Planetside 2 for over an year. Did Matt Higby give a shit back then? NOPE. It apparently takes a console, to get games even remotely optimized for PC.

    Bioshock Infinite Benchmark GPU

FYI, you can can rarely force (hardware-)AA via drivers in DX10/11 titles. You can blame Microsoft for that. (a few exception exist though) Somewhat offtopic: hopefully UE4 will, unlike EU3, come with hardcoded, in-engine support for MSAA with proper resolve when combined with post-processing...

With the current rate of Intel CPU performance increases, could AMD be catching up?

That's okay. I just emphasize how silly Fjodr's thoughts are, saying how Intel has no headroom for higher clocks, while AMD's current "high-end" CPU performs worse in nearly every benchmark while drawing over 60% more power doing so. The fact that Intel has little headroom might, or might not be...

With the current rate of Intel CPU performance increases, could AMD be catching up?

125W TDP on the FX8350 is bollocks. I also absolutely agree, that the A10-5800K is a MUCH better comparison to the 3770K, than the 8350. :awe:

With the current rate of Intel CPU performance increases, could AMD be catching up?

Yeah, you tell em. Intel has no headroom for higher clocks, and no TDP headroom either, at all. AMD really has the edge here. :awe:

With the current rate of Intel CPU performance increases, could AMD be catching up?

I know, right? Just like their Notebook APU platform, ... where AMD has an even lower market penetration compared to their desktop solutions.

With the current rate of Intel CPU performance increases, could AMD be catching up?

I'm not sure, but I think we should follow his lead: 1. Actually no. 2. Actually no. 3. AMD still netting a loss, Intel sustaining a positive net profit.

    ARMA III Alpha Benchmarks CPU

Stop crapping in this thread. AtenRa's answer was clear enough, but since you apparently require a additional written explanation to comprehend his post: the link to Crysis 3 was made because it shows the difference in how CPU's might perform in Alpha benchmarks compared with benchmarks of a...

Ofcourse, comparing the date of the BF2's last patch, 4 years after the game launched, with the shipping date of ARMA2 makes complete sense. o_O Whatever floats you boat man.

USB 3.0 problems for Intel's Haswell

No, not really. They have contracts and legal obligations to deliver a number of Haswell CPU's in a certain timeframe. They can't just stop their CPU presses and throw away every Haswell they already have in stock. Letting their OEM partners wait until Intel completed preparing their fabs for...

    Anti-aliasing & Crysis 3...

SMAA T2x and SMAA 4x use temporal multi/super-sampling. Temporal-AA won't work efficiently on multi-GPU, if at all, because you'd have to shift a ton of resources from one GPU to another, every frame.

3770K De-lidded and lapped With Liquid Pro - Awesome results.

I can confirm it solidifies, I can't say how long that takes though. This is what my gpu-block looks like from the bottom, the die-sized gray patch is the solidified TMU, which is hard as rock, and will require sanding to get rid of.

3770K De-lidded and lapped With Liquid Pro - Awesome results.

Really, do mind the bold part. I'm just throwing this out here: I completely screwed up my GPU-temps because of this feature, so a tip; don't use Liquid Pro or similar TIM's on a silicon-die if the attached heatsink is wobbly (like universal waterblocks with only 2 pins) and might move slightly...

Crysis 3 - Return of real PC Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)

Wide-tent filters aren't "post", it simply means it samples outside a pixel's edge. There isn't any more processing involved than there would be in SGSSAA or MSAA with a traditional box-filter.

Crysis 3 - Return of real PC Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)

I completely agree with these statements. Current-gen games use a plethora of highly detailed specular maps and shader effects, which can't be anti-aliased with multisampling. Because of this, SMAA T2x/4x and TXAA are simply far superior, and show us the proper way forward. Both combine MSAA...

Crysis 3 - Return of real PC Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)

This is entirely incorrect. Like I said before, TXAA isn't post AA, and neither is there any SSAA involved. I am sure that I described TXAA's functionality fairly accurate in my previous post, but if that wasn't clear, look up the posts made by Timothy Lottes in these forums.

Crysis 3 - Return of real PC Anti-Aliasing (MSAA)

TXAA isn't Post-AA. Obviously, ...... since TXAA High combines a wide-tent filter, 4xMSAA and a 'temporal-sampling' method based on motion- or camera vectors, using pixel-samples from current and previous frames to significantly decease temporal aliasing. It shouldn't be a surprise, that this...

Multiplayer games you wish more people played?

I have good memories of 'The Ship' in LAN, playing against bots and a single PC. I never imagined I could have had so much fun impersonating bots, complete with their glitchy pathfinding, trying to induce paranoia to my buddy once I discovered which character he was playing, while completely...

    Everquest Free to Play

I've only played Everquest 2 F2P, but if I am not mistaken the restrictions and monetization within EQ1 F2P are similar. Do note however, I never had a decent internet connection up until a few years ago, so my experience with older MMO's is quite limited. I imagine that the experience for a...

How does Neverwinter Night 2 hold up?

From my, mostly singleplayer, experience with both; NWN1 is far superior to NWN2. The first one has, in my opinion, a very enjoyable campaign and both expansions added tons of gameplay and its campaigns where excellent. I also liked that Bioware released a few short adventures for free, after...

Forget Anti Aliasing - Where is PPI

I'm not sure if I should take your comment serious, 2x MSAA is laughable and I wouldn't even call that proper anti-aliasing. Unless you're using some kind of temporal, high frequency sampling pattern, (or a quincunx pattern) you are only applying AA to a single plane, either vertical or...

Forget Anti Aliasing - Where is PPI

No it isn't. In every decent engine, MSAA is always cheaper than increasing the amount of pixel-samples (either by increasing the resolution or by using SSAA). It's the whole reason why MSAA was invented in the first place. There are a few cases (highly deferred renderers) that MSAA costs...

    base building games

The only games which gave me that Total Annihilation feel, are the TA-based Mods on the Spring engine. It's primarily Multiplayer though. I haven't checked up upon them for a while, but few years back, the mods Balanced Annihilation and Zero-K (previously "Complete Annihilation") where very...

GameSpy multiplaer servers terminated for numerous legacy titles :(

You mean that stand-alone GameSpy-browser, hah, I doubt that. The issue here however, is that game developers used GameSpy's servers as authorization/master-server, instead of hosting their own. This is a good example why games should have proper LAN/P2P support.

    Your contenders for GOTY?

I was already expecting a comment like this. :hmm: However, if you don't pull the quote of out its context and read carefully, you'll understand what I'm saying. I haven't said that GW2 was a disappointing game, quite the contrary: I did say I was disappointed that, for me, GW2 wasn't the...

    Your contenders for GOTY?

While GW2 is a pretty good game and personally, I thought it would shake up the MMO world for good. After 500 hours of play time, I'm quite disappointed, on many points its not all that different from 'Generic MMO #230'. In many ways it actually takes a serious step back, it also has some very...

    Towns

I like DF, at least the mechanics and gameplay, and with tilesets it looks perfectly fine. That said, after playing it for a while, I won't touch DF anymore, not even with a ten-foot pole. I am completely frustrated by its absolutely horrid user interface, controls that only feel natural to...

    Can I use 8xMSAA on Battlefield 3?

This is very much incorrect. If MSAA is properly implemented in a deferred engine, it is equal to a proper MSAA implementation within a forward renderer. If a scene isn't fully anti-aliased, then either, the developers are incredibly sloppy and don't really care about accurate MSAA, or it is...
  32. S

    Can I use 8xMSAA on Battlefield 3?

That has nothing to do with what Frost Bites is asking. Not sure what you're getting at either, deferred rendering doesn't change the quality of MSAA, as long as the sampling is done correctly (which is more complex then in a forward renderer, and primarily costs more memory bandwidth). That...

    Can I use 8xMSAA on Battlefield 3?

Instead of arguing, here are some answers: You can't force MSAA in DX10/11 games via drivers. 'AA mode' in NCP is the method of adding AA, if a game supports MSAA itself, you should choose 'Enhance', instead of override. It will then enhance the sampling patern of ingame-AA with additional...

custom resolution ??? is that good idea ?

No, it won't. 1080p with 4x MSAA will have 4 colour samples per multisampled pixel (polygon edges and transparent objects). 1440p downscaled to 1080p will have 1.7 pixel-sample per pixel. Since BF3 has properly implemented alpha-to-coverage to handle transparency (only if MSAA is enabled...

Latest Guild Wars 2 GPU Performance Data

I did not misspoke. I said that OGSSAA on its own has little effect on diagonals, thats why I am using it in conjunction with SMAA. If SGSSAA was an option, I'd enable that, but that is not the case. To make my opinion easily understandable: 1.2x driver-OGSSAA + SMAA > 1.5x ingame-OGSSAA (+...

Latest Guild Wars 2 GPU Performance Data

Well, like I said: I'm personally using 1.2x OGSSAA (using Nvidia's resolution-downscale method) By enabling a custom resolution, the game renders at a higher resolution then you're monitor supports, the driver downsamples this, basicly providing OGSSAA. If you are not familiar with this...

Latest Guild Wars 2 GPU Performance Data

For now, I highly recommend to disable any form of MSAA (and AA-bits) in GW2, since the only working bit is flawed and introduces glitches. Transparency MSAA/SSAA don't work either. If you can't get SSAO working (you can easily notice it on snowy-area's), open Nvidia Inspector and reset your...

Latest Guild Wars 2 GPU Performance Data

Just for anyone else which was disappointed that the Nvidia driver-level SSAO for GW2 is barely noticeable, introduces glitches and has quite the performance hit. Using NV-Inspector, you can change the Ambient-Occlusion compatibility-bit in GW2's profile to those of: Darksiders 2 (good...

    mrhaandi's: injectSMAA

SMAA outputs a log-file when it bumps up against a problem, it also stops the executable. You shouldn't try to use the DX10-dll with a DX9 game, it will never work, I'm actually surprised you where able to start the game without it crashing in some horrible way. :D
