  1. i5 3230m vs i5 3317u

Are you using a hard drive or solid-state drive? If not a solid-state drive that will dramatically improve performance. How much memory do you have installed? It's very unlikely you are CPU-bound.
  2. Mini itx HTPC case with slim bluray and one 2.5 drive options

Those are nice. I've used the SH-80 which is the OEM version of that case and I can tell you it's hard to keep even a 35W processor cool in those cases. I've found them best suited for Atom, Celeron mobile and i3-3217U mobile motherboards that have on-board DC power (i.e. thin mini-ITX boards)...
  3. Is this the newest contender for the ITX cooling crown?

I'd like to see some numbers too. Right now I can find the T459 for $30 on Amazon and the Thermolab for $60 on eBay. I'd like to know if it's twice as good for the money. In the couple of dozen builds I've done with the T459 it keeps Ivy Bridge CPUs cool and quiet. The most powerful CPU it's...
  4. Is this the newest contender for the ITX cooling crown?

I guess it's good then that they have you to cater to their wishes. Gold star for you!
  5. Is this the newest contender for the ITX cooling crown?

My favorite low-profile HSF right now is the Dynatron T459. It's very quiet and does a great job cooling in mini-ITX cases.
  6. Need advise on sub $350 mini-itx box

There's a long thread at the XBMC Hardware Forums on using Celeron 847 motherboards for HTPC: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=143433. Overall, it's very good.
  7. Mini itx HTPC case with slim bluray and one 2.5 drive options

The Realan E-i7 would be a good mini-ITX choice that has a slot-load blu-ray bay, 2.5" bay and a low-profile expansion slot. It's a nice, stylish, aluminum case.
  8. Which build would you choose and why ?

Seems to also be none of: SFF, Notebook or Barebones/Pre-Built. This would get better attention elsewhere I think.
  9. Mini-ITX Ideas

Oh, and another fun way to find mini-ITX case idea is to Google "itx case" and then look at the image results. You can see what you might like, easier than pouring through text search results. I do it all the time :).
  10. Mini-ITX Ideas

You'll have to look in Assassin's hardware guide then. He has some good mini-ITX selections there. There's a mini-ITX HTPC case thread here: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1315402/unofficial-mini-itx-case-thread (reading back to front might be a good idea). XBMC hardware forums have lots of folks...
  11. Thin mini-ITX cases? Where?

Then a BIG thank you to you for thin mini-ITX! I can't believe how many problems with small cases having the DC-DC power onboard solves. I have the Euler case and a couple of DH61AG boards I am looking forward to trying when I get the time. It's not easy having the stuff sitting on my shelf.

  13. Case for quiet Mini-iTX build with i5-3570K

Realan E-i7 will work fine with the i5-3570K as long as you don't plan to overclock. You'll want a bit beefier CPU cooler like the Scythe Kozuti and at least one 80mm case fan. You'll also want to upgrade the AC adapter to the 120W AC adapter instead of the standard 84W. Are you going to use a...
  14. Cutting the cord, simple approach. Couple questions

I can't wait until our contact is up and I can dump those Disney shows. Man do they suck.
  15. First HTPC Build Review

I run OpenELEC off a USB stick with an E-350 and a Celeron 847. It'll run like a rockstar with the G860.
  16. How To Rip Blu-rays To .MKV

I've been super happy with DVDFab for backing up the main movie of my blu-rays to MKV.
  17. Review my HTPC Build

My kids (8 & 6) use our OpenELEC PC no problem. Have a look at OpenELEC if you're looking for something "appliance"-ish with XBMC. I also don't have an SSD, just a 16GB USB stick I bought a USB-to-USB header adapter for an installed internally. For TV though, you can't beat WMC. My wife and...
  18. TV Suitable for Use with HTPC

My Panasonic TC-L55ET5 has a 1:1 setting. It was a little tricky to find, you had to select 16:9 and then "format 2" or something like that.
  19. Is this budget cpu / mobo viable?

If you're not overclocking you don't *need* a Z77 but if the price is right/better than H77 it all look good to me.
  20. Getting this HTPC running has been a complete nightmare.

Yeah, when you try to send an unsupported format out, either video or audio, you get super strange behaviors that don't come anywhere near pointing to the real problem.
  21. First time builder seeks HTPC build advice

The dirty little secret about the SandyBridge Pentium is that the GPU is exactly the same as the Intel 2000 HD in the i3 except w/o 3D and QuickSync support. You can pick up a G850 for under $70. Personally, I have a G620 and G530+HD5450 in my HTPCs. I mostly watch live TV (CableCard tuner)...
  22. Processor suggestions for HTPC/light gaming

I feel like this might be the sweet-spot for this at $69.99: Intel Pentium G860 Sandy Bridge 3.0 GHz LGA1155 Dual-Core 32nm Processor, Model: BX80623G860, Retail Box I am not sure the i3-2100 is worth $40-50 more for what you want to do with this. [Edit] This is for using with your HD5670.
  23. Need advice for case and PSU for Clarksdale HTPC build

I am starting to think the CPU fan whine is a characteristic of H55 Gigabyte boards. There's something about the way they do fan control -- up, down, up, down constantly. I've tried many different CPU coolers with my GA-H55N-USB3 and I am never happy with the noise profile. For power supply...
  24. Looking for feedback on HTPC build...

If encoding time is important, I'd pick the i5-3570K. The CPU performance is going to be far superior to the A10-5800K and the GPU will be good enough you don't need a card except for gaming. Yes, it costs more but you won't need to underclock it/undervolt it to have it run cool and quiet.
  25. mini-itx case w/ expansion slot, but no 5.25 drive/Slim drive slot?

A great case but it lacks an expansion slot. It's bigger brother http://www.ecosmartpc.com/ei7 has an expansion slot but also a slim ODD slot in the front. There is hope soon however there will be a new version out without the slim ODD slot in the front. Meanwhile, there is the Wesena ITX4...
  26. Logisys (DeepCool) CPU Heatsinks: User Feedback Requested

  27. Looking for feedback on HTPC build...

I like the EA380D but for the ML03 since it's tight I like this PSU instead: FSP Group FSP300-60GHS-R 300W SFX12V 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply. Being SFX it takes up much less space but it comes with an SFX-to-ATX/PS2 bracket which lets you mount it in the ATX PSU bay of the ML03. FSP makes...
  28. Help, No HDMI Sound

Make sure the HDMI Audio is the default playback device Open Sound by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type sound, and then click Sound. Click the Playback tab and look for an HDMI device; this will appear as a speaker icon and will be labeled...
  29. Logisys (DeepCool) CPU Heatsinks: User Feedback Requested

I know this is pretty old but Goggle led me here of course. I just unboxed the Logisys HTPC-11 today and find that the fan is 3-pin, not 4-pin. There is no fan control so it runs at 2600RPM +/- 10%. This is pretty much a non-starter. Who makes a HSF with a 3-pin fan?! Of course, it doesn't...
  30. Viability of A6-5400K in HTPC

  31. First Time HTPC Builder

Give consideration to this power supply in the ML03 (or any other small case that takes an ATX power supply) FSP Group FSP300-60GHS-R 300W SFX12V 80 PLUS Certified Power Supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817104075 It comes with a bracket to install it into an ATX PSU bay...
  32. Pixelation and Intel G620

It seems to me if the G620 wasn't able to handle 1080p it would have been an issue all along not just start happening suddenly. I suspect a driver or software problem -- perhaps a recent update.
  33. Questions about HTPC build! :)

FWIW, those are all parts I would choose :).
  34. Building first HTPC, opinions please

It makes a difference in benchmarks but nothing you'd see in HTPC usage. I get whatever's on sale. If 1600 is the same or cheaper than 1333 then I get that. Same for 1866 with AMD builds.
  35. Building first HTPC, opinions please

    i3-2105 will do 3D too :). http://www.pcworld.com/article/217828/build_a_3d_home_theater_pc_with_sandy_bridge.html
  36. First HTPC build / Opinions?

All my PCs, HTPC or otherwise, have SSDs. The improvement has to be experienced to be appreciated.
  37. Cutting the cord and going HTPC

With the Red Sox s*cking, the NFL ref debacle and no Bruins games this year maybe I could really cut the cord since there will be no decent sports to watch anyway.
  38. Building first HTPC, opinions please

It really is hard to sift through the marketing cruft to know if 3D really is 3D (HDMI 1.4a) or some weird post-processing thing they are claiming. That kind of stuff drives me nuts. How is Joe Six Pack supposed to know?
  39. Building first HTPC, opinions please

Yep. And by quoting the site's marketing blurb no one has to just take my word for it.
  40. Building first HTPC, opinions please

Intel has a great comparison tool for comparing processors. i3-3220 vs i3-3225 "Intel® InTru™ 3D Technology Add a new dimension to your viewing experience. Now you can play games and watch your favorite 3D movies with Blu-ray* Stereo 3D* playback using passive or active shutter 3D glasses...
